Chapter 125: A Deal Worth Considering

Brooke answered the summon and went with the maid to a lounge room, where Sophia was in the middle of addressing the staff of the house.

Upon her arrival, she dismissed them all, save for Wendy and May, who stayed back to wheel Brooke over and pour tea for them.

Sophia dry coughed, "What happened earlier this morning was...unfortunate. To protect the peace of this family, we should keep this to ourselves. Don’t you agree?" She asked, taking the cup of tea offered.

That was one way of putting it. Brooke didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at the way Sophia approached the situation.

"No, I don’t. I have every intention of telling my husband about what happened downstairs." Brooke firmly replied, refusing to back down.

Sophia’s grip on the teacup tightened, but she kept up the unfazed look on her face. "That was just an outburst of emotions, it was unfortunate that you were on the receiving end of things-"

"Your husband hit me." Brooke said, saying things as they were. "And now, you’re trying to get me to shut my mouth about it."

"Quite blunt aren’t we?"

"I’m just being honest." Brooke chimed.

Sophia took a slow sip, then let out a deep sigh, "Name your price. How much do you need to keep this between us? I’m the matron of this family and my pockets are not dry."

Brooke felt like rolling her eyes. This woman reminded her of Luther.

He wasn’t doing the physical abuse, but he always made sure to carry out coverups. Instead of scolding Cassie, he was more interested in helping her hide her misgivings.

"I’m not interested in your money."

"Oh, but you are. A low life like you has nothing to her name, you were crafty enough to latch onto a rich man. So you’re smart enough not to pass up on this offer." Sophia asserted, reeking of confidence.

She passed the cup to Wendy, and straightened her posture. "I’m willing to let you stick close to me, just as I allow Laura. Whether or not your husband gets the inheritance, you’ll be protected by me in this household." Grinning confidently, she asked.

"Now, isn’t that a deal worth considering?"

"Young Miss? What are you looking for?" Mallory’s maids asked, watching from the door, as their mistress searched her shelves in a panicked manner.

She had couped herself upstairs the entire day and didn’t come downstairs for dinner. Of course, no one in the family cared to ask for her well-being, hence the maids took it upon themselves to find out.

"My book, my design book, the one aunt Rachelle gave me!" She stressed, taking the books out of the shelves, and tossing them onto the bed.

Both maids exchanged confused glances.

"You have hundreds of books from her, why are you so fixated on this one?" One of them asked, stepping forward. She reached for Mallory’s shoulder to try calm her, fearing she would trigger her anxiety.

"No!" Mallory tensed up, "That book has her first ever designs in it, she gave that to me specially when I last saw her. It’s her most prized possession-"

"Calm down, please, we’ll both look for it in your place-"

Right in the middle of their conversation, Mallory recalled leaving the book back at the Grayson household, on their dining table.

Her face turned pale.

"Damn it!" She pulled at her hair, while lowering herself into a squat. "I don’t want to go back there."

She dreaded the thought of witnessing what she did all over again. Not to talk of seeing the man she was trying very hard to forget about.

Her maids rushed to her sides, and tried to comfort her, only for them to get interrupted by one of the gardeners, who came with a message.

"Young Miss, you have a visitor outside to see you."

Mallory blinked twice, "A visitor? Who?" She didn’t have any friends, she had lived with her aunt for a large chunk of her life. Plus, her anxiety never allowed her to socialize with others within her circle.

"Mr Grayson." He announced.

Mallory’s heart skipped a beat.

’Thane is here? But why would he come all the way just to see me?’ she thought, getting off the ground.

She rushed over to her mirror and picked up a hairbrush, and began arranging her hair. Her maids watched in awe as their young miss who never cared for appearances tidy herself up. She sprayed on five perfumes, letting the excitement of seeing him drown out the fact that he was a married man.

However, that excitement died down when she reached the back gates, only to see Matthew standing there.

"Holy shit, what’s with the look? Are you that disappointed to see me?" He asked, reaching into the back of his motorcycle.

Mallory folded her arms, "Matthew, why are you here?" She could pick up on the scent of alcohol on him, and found it bold of him to drive that contraption in his state.

"Catch." He said then proceeded to throw the book at her.

Or at least he pretended to. After Mallory took a dive to catch it, she fell on her knees, only to look up at Matthew laughing at her, with the book still in his hand. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

"Haha, hilarious." She grumbled, getting up.

She felt stupid thinking Thane would come, he was married and by the look of it to someone he cared about.

But still...

’Why did the annoying brother have to come?’ she balled her fists.

"Can I have my book back?" She gritted her teeth.

Matthew stared at the way she glared at him so openly. It was quite different from how she forced a polite expression on her face when she was around his family.

"Why don’t you act polite around me? The way you do with everyone else?" He asked all of a sudden.

"If I answer, will I get my book back?"

He pretended to think over the answer, infuriating Mallory. "Maybe."

She huffed in frustration, "You want to know why? Because I don’t see you as a threat."

"A threat?" He raised a brow.

"Yes. Despite how obnoxiously and insufferably you act, I don’t think you have any real bad intentions." She said in a softer tone.

Matthew laughed, "Well you’re wrong. I too want a piece of the inheritance, and I’m willing to get my hands dirty to do it." He told her.

Mallory laughed in return, "You say that, but here you are at my house at the dead of night, to specially return what I left behind." She flattened her lips into an all knowing smile.

"You’re quite the softie, aren’t you?"

She teased, her smile growing broader as Matthew’s face flushed with an even mix of rage and embarrassment at her comment.
