Deceiving Her Ears: Ignoring Your Call-Chapter 137: Like a Family of Three
The commotion on their side attracted quite a bit of attention.
Although those people were not openly watching, many were sneakily observing.
Natalie walked away without acknowledging Isaac and Jordan behind her.
Seeing her leave, Jordan visibly panicked and sobbed while muttering, "Sister, sister..."
Isaac comforted him, "Your sister has to go to work."
Natalie called Grandma Rivers to inform her that Jordan had been found.
On the other end of the phone, Grandma Rivers thanked the heavens, chanting "Amitabha," "Natalie dear, please help look after Jordan for two days, just two days. I’ll come to Janton to pick him up."
Natalie couldn’t refuse the elderly woman’s request and had to agree, planning to take Jordan home after work.
For the next three-plus hours until the end of the workday, Jordan would be with Isaac, who would look after him.
Natalie wasn’t sure what methods Isaac used to make Jordan so dependent on him.
Well, he’s good at these tactics, using them to achieve his goals.
This time, he also used Jordan as a way to return home with her.
But honestly, facing Jordan alone was something she truly couldn’t manage.
When Natalie got home, she went straight to her bedroom.
Isaac gave Jordan a look, and Jordan nodded, taking a deep breath and walking to the bedroom door to knock.
After a moment, the door opened.
Natalie looked coldly at the two figures outside the door.
Jordan glanced back at Isaac, who offered an encouraging look, then turned back to Natalie and said, "Sister, I’m sorry. I was wrong."
Natalie’s face remained cold.
For such a young child to dare run so far on their own, they were indeed bold and headstrong.
What if something went wrong along the way, like being abducted?
Natalie wanted to scold Jordan, telling him he must never do this again.
But as soon as her lips moved, those words were swallowed back down.
She actually resisted acknowledging being Jordan’s sister, so any lecture would be omitted.
Isaac stepped forward, gently holding Jordan’s shoulders, and looked at Natalie, "I’ll cook; it won’t take long."
Natalie said nothing and turned back to her room.
Isaac took Jordan to the living room, let him watch TV, and went into the kitchen.
His cooking skills were average, making only simple homely dishes, but quickly he whipped up three quick dishes and a cola chicken wings.
As expected, seeing the chicken wings made Jordan’s eyes light up.
Isaac called Natalie to come out for dinner.
With Jordan present, Natalie did not refuse again.
The three sat at the dining table, like a family of three.
Being just a child, Jordan stared straight at the chicken wings but was too shy to reach out, focusing on scooping rice instead.
Isaac picked up a chicken wing for him, and Jordan, not even having swallowed his rice, mumbled, "Thank you, Jeff!"
"Eat," Isaac said, then placed a chicken wing in Natalie’s bowl.
Natalie looked down without throwing the chicken wing out of her bowl.
Isaac let out a relieved sigh.
Knowing it was all thanks to Jordan, he was grateful to the little guy, which is why half the chicken wings went into Jordan’s tummy.
After dinner, while cleaning up, Isaac noticed the leftover carrots in both Natalie’s and Jordan’s bowls, pausing for a moment.
Natalie also noticed, her expression cooled, and she turned to leave.
Jordan cautiously asked Isaac, "Brother-in-law, is sister mad because I’m picky with food?"
Isaac patted his head and told him to wait in the living room for fruit.
After Jordan left, Isaac continued tidying the table.
He thought she might be agitated because of the similarity in tastes, a silent reminder of their sibling relationship.
Later, Isaac bathed Jordan in the guestroom’s bathroom. Since there weren’t any pajamas for the little one to wear, he had to sleep in his shorts.
"Can you sleep alone?"
"I can." Jordan nodded, snuggling into the bed and said, "This bed is so comfy, and the pillow and quilt smell nice."
Isaac tucked him in, "Sleep well."
Jordan, having had a long day, was barely able to keep his eyes open once his head hit the pillow and soon fell asleep.
Isaac left the guest room, closed the door, and looked towards the master bedroom.
Natalie lay with her eyes closed but couldn’t sleep.
So when Isaac quietly opened the door and came in, she was aware.
He walked carefully over, came up from the other side, and slipped under the covers to lie next to her.
She lay on her side.
A short while later, he slowly edged closer from behind and wrapped his arms around her waist, almost enveloping her completely.
"Little Ear, I know you’re awake."
"Can we talk?"
"Then will you listen to me?"
"When it began, I was indeed not pure in my intentions."
As Isaac spoke, he was sometimes tense enough for his heart to clench.
"You know I don’t get along with Ethan, right? Because he once caused my sister’s death, and at that time, my mom was carrying my sister."
"My dad covered for Ethan, so he didn’t face any punishment."
"But my mom could no longer have children. She was so frightened of Ethan that she developed moderate depression."
"No matter the cost, I have to make Ethan pay for his actions."
In the darkness.
Throughout, Natalie remained silent, with no intention of opening her eyes or responding.
Isaac could not force her to respond, eventually just holding her tighter to sleep.
Natalie waited until the breathing behind her became steady, then slowly moved away from his arm around her waist and shifted forward a bit, distancing herself from him.
——
The next morning, when Isaac woke up, he found himself alone.
He immediately sat up, ran a hand through his hair, and headed out the door.
"Brother-in-law, good morning." Jordan was already dressed and obediently sitting on the living room sofa.
Seeing him, he immediately jumped off the sofa and walked over.
Isaac ruffled his hair and asked, "Where’s your sister?"
"Sister is making breakfast," Jordan said, unable to suppress his excitement.
He was about to have something his sister made.
Isaac walked into the kitchen and saw Natalie making sandwiches.
It was clear there were only two portions.
None for him.
He felt a twinge of jealousy for Jordan, that little guy.
Not wanting to leave Jordan alone at home, Natalie took him to the Beckett Group.
It’s just for two days anyway.
Bear with it and it would be over.
Once Grandma Rivers came to pick him up, everything would go back to normal.
Today, Jordan didn’t follow Isaac but stayed in Natalie’s office.
Since kids shouldn’t drink coffee, Natalie had her assistant make him a strawberry-flavored milk tea.
Jordan might not get milk tea often, so he held the cup with both hands, drinking it carefully.
When Natalie glanced over while reading documents, she accidentally noticed him.
The little guy sat quietly and calmly on the leather sofa, pulling a book from his bag to read.
Just as she was about to look away, she inadvertently noticed his pants were torn.
Originally, she intended to ignore it.
But after lunch, she took Jordan to the mall.
She bought him a set of clothes, and as they were leaving, noticed him staring at an ice cream in another child’s hand.
So she took Jordan to get ice cream.
"Sister, this is so sweet!" Jordan exclaimed excitedly to Natalie, holding up the ice cream.
Natalie glanced at him nonchalantly, then looked up and paused.
