Death Mage with an SS-Rank Talent-Chapter 214
Chapter 214: Chapter 214
The old chief watched as the cars and trucks slowly approached the village. He shuddered a little, thinking of what was going to happen to their village.
A few minutes ago, he was sleeping peacefully in his ned, when a guard came to wake him up, destroying his peaceful dream. They spotted a bunch of vehicles coming towards the village.
Though they couldn’t see them clearly due to it still being night, the headlights were enough to estimate the numbers and the kind of vehicles approaching.
As they approached the village, they could see a bit clearly. There are two trucks and four cars, and these vehicles don’t look civilian. They scream something powerful.
What the guard captain and the chief believed was that the incoming were the bandits coming to attack the village. If not for that, such an entourage would not be proceeding to such a small village. They would be heading towards Woodstone City.
They prepared every guard and able warrior to the top of the wall.
The walls are sturdy enough even to repel a low-level Rank-3 monster. So, as long as those bandits didn’t bring something that could break the wall, they would be safe, but the chief knew that the wall was not invincible.
It might stand against a low-level Rank-3 monster, but if a bunch of them attack it at the same time, how long would it stand?
Even if it were Rank-1 attacks, the wall would be chipped a little by little and would soon cave in. So, they need to wipe out the attackers as fast as they can.
He should arrange the close-range combatants outside the wall to stall the attackers and eliminate them easily, but he didn’t want the village to suffer like that. Even if the wall falls, they can just repair it. It’s just some resources, but if a warrior gets injured enough that they can’t fight anymore or dies, then the loss would be more than just a few resources.
He couldn’t accept that. So, all long-range fighters were stationed at the top, and the close-range fighters were stationed inside by the gate, ready to pounce and attack when they were given the chance.
The chief didn’t know how powerful the ones coming here are. So, he kept the emergency signal beacon in his hand, ready to press the button as soon as he had eyes on them.
Though he was sure that it would be bandits, as there is nothing of value except for the humans here, he wanted to be sure before he pressed the emergency beacon, which would alert the Woodstone City authorities.
As long as they come in time, they could be saved, even if a few die.
One might think, why not light the beacon now and wait till he verifies to see who exactly is coming. It was because, if this turns out to be a false alarm, the authorities might be withheld from an actual emergency, or they could not respond faster when they face an actual emergency.
He needs to be sure before calling for the reinforcements, or he will have to face the consequences later on.
---
As the chief and the captain were mulling over who the convoy belonged to, the vehicles neared the village and stopped in front of the gate.
The old chief withheld his breath in fear until he saw the person exiting the car. He recognised the girl. It was one of the three students who came here to complete the mission that he posted some time ago.
Only then did he release his breath in relief. He didn’t see it before, but the captain, too, was holding his breath till then.
They soon saw the other two getting out of the trucks and ordering everyone to get down.
Soon, the chief and captain saw what was happening. The travellers are not exactly travellers as the captain recognised one of the people, a woman, who was carrying a child in her hands.
He recognised her because she was the wife of the guard captain of a nearby village, who is a close friend.
Though the villages are always competing for resources, they are not enemies, just competitors. Most people who are in the same profession have even friends in those competing villages.
Chiefs are friends with other chiefs, while captains are also the same.
It was how he knew the woman and the child. He saw her a year ago, when the child was born, and the father threw a party. Now, the father is most likely gone.
The captain sighed, thinking about the future of that child.
The child was supposed to be raised under the protection of a powerful person, and would have grown powerful, but lost everything now. He would now have to grow up in poor conditions and without a father.
The worst part is that all the kids present have to grow up without at least one parent. Not everyone has both parents when the bandits came to their villages to loot the village and kidnap them.
There are a few who lost their fathers beforehand or mothers due to one reason or another. If they didn’t have any fathers before, what they lost would be minimal, but if they didn’t have mothers before, then now they would be orphans.
If they were teens, then there are ways to let them earn something for a living, but if they are kids, what can they do to earn their food? They had to depend on the charity of others.
"Chief, I think those are the villagers that were kidnapped from our neighbouring villages", the captain said after a second.
"Yeah, I think so too", the chief spoke.
He, too, recognised a few faces. Some were wives of some of the chiefs, and others were from people who were of importance to the villages. He has met them a few times, but he has a good memory, which is why he became the chief of the village.
"Maybe the kids cleared out those bandits and freed the villagers that were still alive", the chief spoke with a smile forming on his face.
"Guards, open the gates", he quickly ordered, welcoming the people inside.
