Dashing Student-Chapter 1125: Going Along with the Flow
The speed of Chen Nan’s cultivation advancement caused waves of shock in Lin Rou’s heart. He had never seen a cultivator improve at such a rapid pace; he was simply a prodigy!
Only Chen Nan himself knew in his heart that his true cultivation was at the First-Layer Golden Core Realm, and he could choose how much of his cultivation to reveal.
The reason for revealing his cultivation so quickly was to rapidly accumulate merit, as he had a premonition that his identity would not remain hidden for long.
"It was just luck," Chen Nan said humbly with a smile. "By the way, madam, how long does it usually take for a D-level task to arrive? There are too few at the moment."
Lin Rou was taken aback. What assassin complains about too few tasks? Unless it’s those demon cultivators addicted to killing, but Chen Nan hardly looked like a demon cultivator, quite the contrary, he appeared full of righteousness.
Could it be...
"Little brother, are you really doing this for me? I’m truly touched," said Lin Rou, looking delicate and charming, exuding an enchanting aura with every move, which was blatant seduction to Chen Nan.
Although he had previously mentioned that he would strive to become an A-level assassin for Lin Rou, it was merely a casual remark. All he really wanted was the "Heaven-Slaying Art."
But letting Lin Rou misunderstand was not necessarily a bad thing, as she, being the proprietress of the Forget Worry Inn, presumably knew quite a few things.
Among them might be the information Chen Nan was eager to investigate.
"Of course, having promised you, I naturally have to work hard, sister," Chen Nan went along with it and even quietly held the soft and boneless hand of the proprietress.
"You might be disappointed then," Lin Rou withdrew her hand subtly. "There aren’t many people who can afford to hire assassins from Yama Hall, let alone Foundation Establishment cultivators. Hiring Yama Hall assassins for them is simply a waste."
"Therefore, there are not many D-level tasks, and you already finished them all in one go. You’re taking jobs from other assassins."
Chen Nan slightly furrowed his brow and sighed, saying, "I only aim to rise quickly, so please, sister, show me the way."
Lin Rou covered her mouth and chuckled softly, whispering, "Since my little brother has a request, it’s hard for me to refuse, so let me show you the way."
"The tasks in the Forget Sorrow Forest are all from Xuanmo State, and our Yama Hall has branches in other states. Naturally, there are tasks in the branches."
Chen Nan suddenly realized that Yama Hall has divisions in each state, and the tasks in the headquarters, Xuanmo State, are carried out by assassins from the main hall.
Tasks from other states are handled by assassins from the respective state branches.
Lin Rou’s meaning was to let him go to other states to snatch tasks.
Although this might impact unity somewhat, there were no rules at Yama Hall prohibiting taking tasks in other states.
Chen Nan wasn’t planning to stay long, so he wasn’t afraid of offending assassins from other branches.
"Thank you, sister." Chen Nan joyfully cupped his hands, "No need to open the cultivation room; let’s talk when I get back."
Then he turned and left, heading straight for the Teleportation Array in Immortal Camel City.
Lin Rou stomped her foot lightly, murmuring, "What an impatient one. All this time, he hasn’t spent a single Spirit Stone here."
"Is it really for me?"
A heart that had been silent for hundreds of years quietly stirred at this moment.
...
Yangzhou, also known as Yingzhou, contains several immortal mountain secret realms such as Penglai and Yingzhou. It is truly a land of immortals, thus directly named after Immortal Mountain.
The first stop for Chen Nan after leaving Xuanmo State was Yingzhou.
A dilapidated medical hall stood in a narrow alley, its signboard bearing the four large characters "Immortal Music Medical Hall."
This was a place where outsiders issued bounties to hire Yama Hall assassins, and the presence of Immortal Music Medical Hall could be found almost everywhere across the Nine Provinces.
Chen Nan entered the medical hall directly and showed his assassin token to a middle-aged man.
"Are you an assassin from the main hall? What are you doing in Yingzhou?" The middle-aged man asked in confusion as he led Chen Nan to the backyard.
Chen Nan smiled and said, "I’m just passing by and wanted to take on a few tasks along the way."
"I see, then follow me." The middle-aged man had no doubts and led Chen Nan into another room, which was covered by an array outside.
Inside the room, there was a quite tall bookshelf with several small Jade Scrolls placed on it, each representing a task, and categorized into different levels as well.
The Jade Scrolls recorded basic information on the target and the rewards offered, allowing assassins to choose tasks. Some tasks, when left unfinished for a long time, would be forcibly assigned to personnel.
Chen Nan looked a bit disappointed, as there were only a little over thirty D-level tasks available in Yingzhou, though there were plenty of C-level tasks, but unfortunately, he wasn’t at the required level.
"Take your time selecting," the middle-aged man said and was about to leave.
To his surprise, Chen Nan quickly stepped forward, waved his hand, and gathered all the C-level task Jade Scrolls.
"I’ll take on all these tasks."
After saying this, he left in a hurry as if fearing that the middle-aged man might change his mind.
The middle-aged man hadn’t yet reacted when Chen Nan’s figure was already gone from sight. After a long while, he muttered, "Is he insane? Taking on so many tasks alone, isn’t he afraid of dying?"
No one would answer his question. Chen Nan left with the Jade Scrolls, found a place to quickly review them all, and discovered that there was a target within this very city.
It was quite a challenging assassination, a little clan leader with cultivation at the Peak of Foundation Establishment.
With such cultivation, he should have been a C-level task, but because this clan leader indulged himself in pleasures, exploiting and oppressing mortals, his cultivation had been piled up through elixir pills, thus he was downgraded to a D-level task.
Chen Nan put away the Jade Scrolls and headed straight for the family without hesitation.
The guards of such a small family were no challenge to him, so he easily located the little clan leader.
After killing a few guards, he entered the clan leader’s study. However, he didn’t expect there to be a secret room, with its door open.
"Didn’t I say no one is allowed in here?"
A voice came from the secret room, and then a figure quickly walked out, a look of anger on his face.
He wore a defense magic robe, and the Jade Pendant at his waist was obviously some kind of defensive spiritual artifact, but his aura was weak, clearly due to overindulgence and a depleted body.
Despite his despicable nature, he valued his life highly.
Seeing Chen Nan, he was immediately shocked and called out hastily, "Who are you? Where are the guards? Someone, come quickly!"
Chen Nan lightly moved his fingers, and the Void Breaking Sword silently flew out, piercing through the little clan leader’s shoulder instantly, rendering both the defense magic robe and the defensive spiritual artifact utterly ineffective against the sword’s sharpness.
The little clan leader’s face suddenly changed dramatically, his frightened eyes widening as he pointed a trembling finger at Chen Nan, "You... who are you?"
