Daily life of a cultivation judge-Chapter 974: The blessing of the ordinary and the curse of the extraordinary
Yang Qing helped the young teen settle as he even poured him a bit of tea to help calm his nerves. Whatever he had to share, it was already evident that it weighed heavily on the young cultivator’s mind.
Seeing him, Yang Qing couldn’t help but remember something once spoken by the instructor they had for their survival and adapt classes. The instructor said that the world was brutally fair at times in all things and unfair at the same time. Being born ordinary with an ordinary background, an ordinary build and talent could be considered a blessing, especially if your background was lacking.
Being ordinary was the best form of protection someone could have. If you are ordinary, you wouldn’t draw unnecessary attentions or troubles. No one would give you much thought. Take Yang Qing for example, discounting his clan’s eccentric actions, they could be considered an ordinary clan full of lunatics obsessed with the lowly body refinement stage. Their clan’s grounds was in some barren mountain that even a malnourished bear would disdain to call home.
But because of how ordinary they were, for as long as Yang Qing could remember, they have never been attacked or drawn unwanted attention. People actually chose to avoid them because of their crazy reputation and the screams of plea that echoed around the mountain when the younger members of the clan were put through the clan’s body refinement procedures.

Yang Qing was proud to admit he wasn’t among the screamers. It wasn’t out of bravery. The vindictive and petty side of him just would not want to give his grandfather and the other old codgers the satisfaction. But he would whimper in the confines of his home though, with his father joining him a few times, a time shared that he would remember fondly. It helped him get through the worst of it.
All that aside, because of how ordinary they were, the clan was able to do extraordinary things without drawing attention. They produced several gold body experts within their rank year after year, but nobody cared because it was a clan of qi refinement experts living in barren mountain. That cover was what gave them enough breathing room to produce a peerless jade physique user in Yang Qing, and even give them enough time and peace to improve their research into the body refinement realm.
Before the clan was migrated to the Order, they had already perfected how to achieve the silver body with 100% certainty and lowered the threshold for it.
The silver body wasn’t anything noteworthy in the larger scheme of things since a silver body could still be slapped up by a cultivator in the middle stages of the qi refinement realm. Regardless of that, in the body refinement stage, it was still a worthy feat that only one in a thousand cultivators in the body refinement realm get to achieve.
Because of its difficulty, only those with a certain level of talent and considerable resources would be able to achieve it and his clan had lowered that threshold be it in terms of talent and resource, and even the time taken to achieve it.
The body refinement realm could be considered useless in most circles, but those top organizations knew how fundamental it was towards the latter stages of the cultivation realm especially the foundation establishment realm.
Cultivators who only achieved the lowest forms in the body refinement realm, such as the iron body, said cultivators were almost guaranteed to never reach the foundation establishment realm, while those who reached the bronze body refinement stage had some sliver of chance of reaching the foundation establishment realm, but even then, when they do reach it, they will only end up with lowest grade pillars. This is the white pillars, or red grade pillars of the lowest variety and with it their chance at reaching the core formation realm forever shattered, bar any unseen circumstances such as fortuitous encounters that are capable of overturning said situation.
For anyone with ambitions of reaching the core formation realm, reaching the silver body increased the odds of that, as only with a silver body could one get top grade red pillars at the bare minimum and if they are diligent enough, orange grade pillars are almost always a guarantee and with orange grade pillars reaching the core formation realm doesn’t seem like an insurmountable mountain.
His clan on perfecting and simplifying the process of achieving the silver body stage had more or less guaranteed the path to the foundation establishment realm at the very least and quite possibly the core formation realm. That was something that would warrant their clan to be destroyed and looted.
But who would believe with the way they were living, that they had such means at their disposal?
If they did, how come they were still living in such a poor environment? Why was there not a single cultivator in who had reached the foundation establishment realm.
The ordinary was what protected them. If they lived in an area that could be easily coveted, and had outlandish achievements like being packed to the brim with qi refinement cultivators from top to bottom, down to the chickens and dogs, and if they were not known lunatics, then quite possibly things may have turn out different for them. They would have drawn eyes they shouldn’t have.
Normal became the best form of protection to those without the ability to protect themselves.
Say some clan without sufficient strength had a child born to them and said child when they were being birthed all manner of wonders happened during his or her birth signifying how extraordinary they were. One of two things was bound to happen. With the fanfare created, it was irreveocable that attention would be drawn to them, and from that attention came either fortune or misfortune.
Fortune was if the wonderous displays alerted some powerful figure nearby who comes to take the child as a disciple forever changing the fortunes of that child and the clan as a result.
As for the misfortune part, that would come from their rival neighbors, or quite possibly even someone from within the clan. All, regardless be it internal or external would view the child as a threat and thus would act accordingly.
The southern continent has birthed countless geniuses who never got to even sprout slightly, all because they had the misfortune of being birthed in a place that could not protect that extraordinary quality long enough for it to manifest.
Same thing applied with treasure. If you didn’t have the strength to protect it, then a precious treasure was no different than a cursed object of calamity.
This was the blessing of the ordinary and the curse of the extraordinary.
