It was fueled by his greed and desire to slack off, but Yang Qing truly believed that there had to be special positions within the Order that could be acquired solely by merit points, he just hadn’t earned enough to be made aware of it or the Order purposefully hid that information from him because of his history with them.

Whether his conjecture was true or not, it was not something he could concern himself with at the moment. He was acutely aware of how poor he was within the ranks of the Order be it in terms of spirit stones and other resources, and or merit points. He was a pauper in all regards, especially when it came to merit points, a fact he came to know back then when he was at the height of his hubris.

Back then after earning his very first 10,000 merit points, followed by another and another to the point that in three years he had gathered about 70,000 merit points, one could understand how a child who used to earn a measly five merit points a month, to the point that his entire four years as a student he cumulatively only managed to earn about 600 merit points, and that was with him risking his life, and being at the brink of physical and mental degradation.

One could understand why said child would suddenly get arrogant and deluded at earning a hundred and twenty times that in just three years and without risking his life at that.

Yang Qing was elated when he earned his first 10,000 merit points, and when it reached 70,000 merit points, he completely lost his mind.

"If you want to know what it feels like to walk like an emperor among men, try walking around with ten thousand merit points in your pocket. That feeling of power, even being an emperor doesn’t come close,"

Those were the words he heard one of his colleagues wistfully say sometime back when he was still a student at the Institute and was working part-time at the Thousands Flavors Restaurant as one of its attendants.

As a student who only earned 5 merit points, those words impacted him greatly as he wondered if he would ever be able to earn such a sum. How long would it take? What would it cost him? He already knew what it cost to earn five merit points, with his creative imagination built from being tortured throughout his childhood, he left it to his imagination what it would cost him to earn 10,000 merit points.

Before he had even started, and despite knowing its value, Yang Qing never thought he would ever get to earn 10,000 merit points, not in one year at least, let alone earn 70,000 merit points two years later, and the feeling...

It was way better than what that senior had mentioned. With his 70,000 merit points, he felt like a god walking among mortals and riding that high, whatever a god wanted, a god would get.

In those three years, he had saved up his merit points, not because there was something he was especially looking to get with said merit points but rather kept them for the feeling it gave him knowing he had them and as an incessant braggart, there was no better weapon for a shameless person like him.

For three years without pause or shame, he bragged to anyone who could listen about the number of merit points he had in his arsenal, and after he had exploited it for what it was worth he thought to himself,

"What is the best way to use the merit points?"

He still wasn’t done bragging about it, but he still needed to use said merit points. Their true value was in redeeming them.

That was when he got the crazy idea to improve the spirit vein running through his abode. By default, all the spirit veins running Blue Valley were lesser dragon veins, if he had the spirit vein in his abode evolved to a mature dragon vein, it was the ultimate bragging point.

He wouldn’t even need to say anything. Casually inviting people to his abode was enough and as a bonus, his cultivation and living conditions would improve by leaps and bounds with a mature dragon vein.

Naive Yang Qing thought 70,000 merit points would be enough for that. One can imagine the shock and the dose of humility he got when he arrogantly walked through the doors of Internal Logistics and asked for a treasure to evolve his spirit vein without even asking for the price.

With 70,000 merit points was there even a need to ask for the price? He could afford it, or so he thought before he was told his merit points were short a zero, which left him a few seconds short of vomiting blood from the sheer embarrassment of it all, and the reality that he wasn’t a god but a decently dressed pauper.

He ended up using said merit points to buy the egg of the celestial nesting weaver before it hatched in the hopes of salvaging something out of it. That ended up being a colossal mistake. That was the tipping point of his road to a proper pauper.

"I need to accept that this is my lot in life," Yang Qing said with an envious and bitter undertone in his voice as he looked around him.

"I am just but a humble parasite surviving on the furs of the blessed," he added as he took a bite out of one of the remaining two diamond echo peach fruit.

...

Back at the whispering tree

"What’s with that look? Don’t tell me you expected him to say ’Oh Ma Yuan, have one’," said one of the beetles, doing a perfect rendition of Yang Qing’s voice as it spoke.

"I told you he isn’t one for sharing," it added.

"What did Yang Qing do to him?" Ma Yuan thought as he sneakily analyzed the second beetle that seemed like the one out of the four that had the biggest agenda against Yang Qing.

Its reaction, and that of the other beetles that were looking enviously at the diamond echo peach tree, prompted a curiosity out of him which was based on what Song Chuanli had told him earlier.

"Seniors forgive me for being rude, but does Owner Song Chuanli not allow you to eat the fruits growing around?" Ma Yuan politely asked.

Before Song Chuanli left, he had told him he could eat any fruit he wanted, and Ma Yuan assumed if he was that generous with someone he didn’t know, then he should be equally so with the cleansing beetles even if not more so.

It went without saying, it was the riled-up second beetle that answered.

"We can eat what we want, to Chuanli other than the wood and other materials these trees and plants offer, don’t care much about the rest," the second beetle said, pausing as it cast a painful look toward the peach tree.

"While he has no problem with it, the trees on the other hand are a different case altogether. Just because... Just because that bastard has ’special attributes’ that the trees and the plants drool over, they disregard us and treat us as dung, and if we dare harvest a fruit from them they retaliate fiercely.

All of them, shameless bootlickers!" the second beetle added angrily, grating its teeth in the process.

"Almost every tree here without exception saves up their fruits for him. Other than Chief Song and maybe that kid Boqin, everyone else can forget about getting a single fruit from them, not without being willing to risk losing a layer of skin, and potentially suffering heavy injuries in the process.

Ah, forget it. Just thinking about it makes me sick," the second beetle added with a sigh as it turned its head joining its fellow beetles that were already well on their way to begin their duties.

Just as it had walked a few steps, it slowly turned its head toward the diamond echo peach tree, Ma Yuan sensing the reluctance and despondency in its look.

"It’s just one fruit," it muttered before turning back and resuming its walk.

Ma Yuan wasn’t sure if he misheard or not, but he could have sworn he heard a soft snorting sound behind him from where the diamond echoe peach tree was.
