Daily life of a cultivation judge-Chapter 945: Ma Yuan’s decision
Ma Yuan’s eyes dimmed slightly as a soft sigh escaped his lips. It was heavy with resignation and disappointment.
In truth after what Yang Qing told him when they first had the discussion, he had already made his choice then. Asking this question now was out of worry and the effects of the trauma he had endured and the fears it left him with.
The past few months was the most relaxed he had ever been in his whole life. Back when he was younger, before he started cultivating, the only reason he ended up stumbling onto the ruin of the rogue palace realm cultivator and alchemist, whose legacy shaped who he is, he had only gone there with his friends because they were running for their lives.
As an orphan trying to make ends meet, it was a given that occasionally they would be forced to do less than savory jobs to have food on the table, and in the process of doing the jobs they angered someone they shouldn’t have. It was the son of the mayor. They injured one of his twice-removed lackeys. A lackey of a lackey that was a lackey of the mayor’s son.
Ideally, under normal circumstances, with how strained and removed the relationship was, their beating up that lackey should not have reached the radar of the mayor’s son but it did and they had no option but to flee, especially with the nefarious reputation surrounding that particular. If they wound up in his clutches, death would be a merciful ending for them, and the mayor’s son wasn’t known for being merciful.
Thus his life on the run started from that moment. He and his friends ended up stumbling in that ruin, and sadly he ended up as the only survivor. He got the inheritance and had a chance to transform his fate.
However, because of what he acquired, he ended up drawing the ire of a sect that had long set their sight on that ruin and the legacy contained herein. Luckily for him, the moment he inherited the legacy, he gained full control over the ruin, and with control of a part of the arrays that were still functional.
He used it those arrays to buy himself enough time to grow his strength but because of how ancient that ruin was, the passage of time had gotten to those protective mechanisms. But not matter how much wear and tear they had, and the shortened life they had, they still bought him enough time to improve his strength from a nobody without a cultivation base to a first-stage core formation realm.
By the time those arrays gave out, he had already made the most of the legacy he had received, and he was capable of at least guaranteeing his life somewhat. So when the sect came in thinking they would find some helpless shrimp, what they found was a strengthened carp with some tiny horns.
He fought his way out, and that set off another round of running, as the sect kept a grudge. He kept running, till he met his wife, and together, they embarked on yet the same running, only this time they were running from her enemies, only Ma Yuan didn’t know how terrifying they were.
For as long as he could remember he was always either from something or to something when his wife and daughter were taken. He had never truly relaxed up until he came to the Order. He didn’t have to carry the burden of the things he used to worry about outside. About the only thing he had to worry about was his daughter’s treatment and mental well-being thereafter and nothing else.

Being at the Order to him, felt like he was inside a bubble that sheltered him from the elements of the outside world while at the same time that bubble functioned like a world of its own, removing any need to have to go outside of it.
For the first time, he didn’t have to worry about his safety. He didn’t have to be wary of his surroundings like a prey expecting a predator to jump out of the bushes whilst it’s drinking water.
That sense of safety and security was something he didn’t want to leave, not with the lingering experience of what happened seven years ago constantly haunting him. He was afraid to leave the bubble and mingle with the outside elements, but with Yang Qing’s vivid but well-meaning description of what it meant to actually be a part of the Order, he realized that this bubble he found comfort in was in fact surrounded by millions of swords all around. These swords constantly slashing and piercing, trying to penetrate the defenses of that bubble and rip everything within, to shreds.
If it was just him, even if the Order was slated to be destroyed the very next day, he would choose to remain without an ounce of hesitation or regret in his heart. The past few months was the most relaxed and fulfilled he had felt in a while.
The countless days he has spent farming and transforming Yang Qing’s abode gave him back a little bit of something he thought he would never get to experience after his wife passed, he felt satisfied, excited, happy, he had a little bit of taste of the satisfaction of those truly living.
He was living, and looking forward to each day. Something he had thought he would have had to fake for quite a while for Ma Ling’s sake. But now, with the transformation over the past few months, he wouldn’t have to.
If Ma Ling wasn’t around, with how he felt these past few months farming, he would have thrown all dignity aside and asked Yang Qing to employ him as his gardener. He wouldn’t even take a singe spirit stone for it, and would have been more than satisfied just doing the work, but with Ma Ling around he couldn’t make such a selfish decision.
He may have been separated from his daughter for the past seven years, but even with that gap, Ma Yuan was still confident he knew his daughter well enough. If she joined the Order, there was no way she would take a safe job and would instead throw herself to the frontlines and share the burden with the rest as the tip of the spear. It was the type of person she was, a trait she no doubt picked from her selfless mother.
If it was before he experienced the loss and despair of having her and his wife snatched away from him, he would have easily indulged the thought. But having experienced that worry, that pain of separation, and how terrifying this world could be, and also personally experiencing the pain of grief, Ma Yuan didn’t have it in him to go through that for even a second more.
With his mind already made up, his expression heavy, Ma Yuan answered,
"I think it’s best if we start over someplace else.."
and joined her mother. Before that, he didn’t have the heart to handle another loss. The guilt of this selfishness was something he could leave with.
