Chapter 248: Chapter 248: I Won’t Be Fooled

Tomorrow is the weekend.

Damon Hawke asked Elara Don to join him and his brother for dinner at the old residence in the evening.

Elara knew Damon planned to tell the elder Hawke couple about their marriage.

She didn’t refuse again.

After dropping off Bea and Dominic Hawke at the training center, she took the opportunity to visit the mall.

The last time she visited the Hawke Family’s old residence, she went empty-handed.

This time she couldn’t be rude again.

Driving into the mall’s underground parking lot, Elara parked her car and got off.

A car drove in beside her, almost hitting her as if intentionally squeezing her.

Elara pressed herself tightly against her own car, her eyebrows knit tightly.

Who was that?

Can’t they park?

Just then, the back door opened, and Evelyn Miles and Selena Taylor stepped out of the car.

So it was them?

So they parked like that on purpose?

Elara’s expression turned slightly cold, but she ignored them and walked out of the lane.

Just because she was understanding didn’t mean others would drop it.

Evelyn Miles’s voice came from behind.

"Elara Don, stop."

Elara paid no heed and continued walking straight ahead.

A hint of annoyance flashed in Evelyn Miles’s eyes.

She quickly stepped forward, blocking Elara’s path.

"Elara Don, are your ears not working? Didn’t you hear me tell you to stop?"

"Some people pretend they don’t hear even when they do, really lacking in manners. No wonder they end up being locked up in those places."

Selena Taylor, cradling her yet-to-show belly, chimed in with sarcasm.

Elara looked at the two, curling her lips coldly, "Whether or not my ears work is not something I need to report to you. When faced with the uncultured, why should I pretend to be refined?"

The woman remained composed, neither arrogant nor submissive.

Isn’t she just a lowly commoner?

Who gave her the confidence to confront me?

Evelyn Miles secretly harbored resentment, but then she smiled.

"Elara Don, do you know what Damon Hawke was doing the day you were locked up? He was with me! That day’s news was seen by many; he accompanied me to dinner, shopping, and a concert, reminiscing about the past together. We were so deep into our feelings that if I hadn’t stopped him, he would have gone with me to the hotel."

She wanted to disgust Elara Don and drive a wedge between her and Damon Hawke!

After all, the news of that day was true, and even if she questioned Damon, it was accurate.

"Yes, I even kept the news! Do you want to see it?"

Selena Taylor dangled her phone beside, her face filled with schadenfreude.

Elara’s fingers slightly clenched, her lips pressed tightly.

Was it true?

Damon Hawke was with Evelyn Miles when she was falsely accused!

"Evelyn Miles, are you showing off to me? Trying to make me misunderstand Tom and break up with him? Sorry, you miscalculated. I won’t be fooled because I trust Tom’s character; he’s not someone who cheats. You can’t sabotage our relationship."

She would verify the news with Damon Hawke and hear his explanation.

She wouldn’t believe a word Evelyn Miles said.

Having said that, Elara didn’t stay any longer, bypassed the two, and prepared to leave.

Evelyn Miles’s face twisted.

"Elara Don, you want to marry Damon Hawke, right? But you’re just a commoner; what can you offer him by marrying him? I’m different. That day, he had a little trouble at work, and I helped him take care of it. But you? What can you do besides adding to his troubles and getting locked up?"

Upon hearing Evelyn’s words, Elara paused, her heart slightly stirred.

No doubt Evelyn’s words made her feel deeply insecure.

She lacked a family background and a high education. If it weren’t for the two children, what right did she have to marry Damon Hawke?

She and him were supposed to be two parallel lines that never intersected.

But fate is just this intriguing.

She and he had intersected, becoming intertwined in each other’s lives.

Elara suppressed her inner turmoil, slightly tilting her head, "Yes, I’m just a commoner. So what? The one he loves now is me, and being with him makes him happy. A person’s life isn’t long; isn’t happiness the most important?"

No matter how insecure she felt inside, she wouldn’t show weakness in front of her love rival.

As she watched Elara’s retreating figure, Evelyn Miles’s chest heaved with anger.

This Elara Don, sharp-tongued indeed!

She wouldn’t just stand by and let her marry Damon Hawke!

"That Elara Don is truly arrogant, Samantha, don’t worry, even if she marries him, there’s such a thing as divorce! Life is long, isn’t it?"

Selena Taylor snorted coldly, comforting.

"Marry? I won’t allow her to marry Damon Hawke. If I can’t have him, then no one will!"

Evelyn Miles’s eyes showed a hint of madness as she spoke.

Selena gave her a look, her eyes flashing.

The reason she and Evelyn could become friends was because they were alike.

When dealing with men, isn’t it just like this?

If you can’t have them, no one else should!

Elara went to the mall, her thoughts still a bit scattered.

Though she pretended to be calm in front of Evelyn Miles, only she knew how uncertain she felt inside.

Suddenly everything felt somewhat tasteless.

She and Damon Hawke’s identities were worlds apart; she loved him but also wanted to stand on the same level and become a good help in his career.

But could she really achieve that?

"Miss, the caterpillar fungus you wanted is ready."

The shop assistant reminded the dazed Elara, and she snapped back to reality, paid, and left with the gift.

Driving out of the mall, she looked at the bustling crowd, turned the steering wheel, and drove to the cemetery.

She missed her mother and wanted to pay her respects.

Hawke Group CEO’s office.

Rhun Quinn was reporting on work to Damon Hawke.

"Mr. Hawke, I hired a hacker to investigate that foreign phone used in the conversation with Jack Clarke and found the phone belongs to James Lee. He is the general manager of the Grant Family, here’s all his information."

Rhun Quinn handed a document to Damon Hawke.

Damon’s eyes shifted slightly as he took it.

He opened James Lee’s file and examined it carefully.

James Lee’s father was Gabriel Miles’s butler.

He started working for the Grant Family right after graduation.

He also has a sister who is Eleanor Shaw’s personal servant.

James Lee is married with children; his wife, son, and daughter all hold different positions at the Grant Family’s branch.

This is quite interesting!

Damon Hawke’s lips curved slightly, "Keep an eye on James Lee and Gabriel Miles, but be cautious not to alert them."

He had a hunch that James Lee was merely a pawn of Gabriel Miles.

The real mastermind should be Gabriel Miles.

He needed to slowly gather evidence to prove it.

"Understood."

Rhun Quinn responded and withdrew, while Damon Hawke’s long fingers tapped the desk, glancing at the time, his expression softened.

As mealtime approached, shouldn’t he have a meal with his wife and children?

Taking out his phone, Damon Hawke dialed Elara Don.

"Elly, where are you? Want to have a meal together?"
