Chapter 142: Chapter 134: You Got Here So Fast?

Around 11 a.m., Laura Quincy was still browsing rental listings online when she suddenly received a call from Jonah Xavier.

"I’m just in the hotel lobby, want to come down and have lunch together?"

"Huh? You got here so fast?"

Laura was stunned for a second before she spoke. Actually, she had wanted to refuse, as interacting too much with Counselor Xavier would only make her owe him too much, and she might never be able to pay it back...

But he was so considerate, directly waiting downstairs at her hotel, making it hard for her to refuse.

"Yeah."

His words were brief and to the point, leaving no room for delay.

After hanging up, Laura had no choice but to change clothes and grab her bag as she headed downstairs.

As soon as Laura reached the lobby, she saw Jonah Xavier sitting on the sofa reading the newspaper, quietly sitting there like a scenic view.

Attracting quite a few glances from young women...

Laura calmly sat across from him and jokingly said, "By sitting down here, I’m sure I’ll attract quite a bit of animosity."

Jonah’s expression was as tranquil as a clear moonlit night, his eyes clear and unclouded as he looked up, "Isn’t it the same for both of us?"

Laura’s lips curved slightly, and she thought to herself how Counselor Xavier really knows how to amuse a girl...

Then she changed the subject, "How long have you been waiting?"

Jonah put down the newspaper in his hand, "I just arrived. I know there’s a really nice restaurant nearby, shall we give it a try?"

Laura nodded, half-jokingly saying, "Sure! But let me say in advance, I have to pay for lunch today, or I’m not going." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Being smart as Jonah Xavier, he naturally understood what Laura meant; she didn’t want to owe him too many favors and wanted to keep the relationship on a friend level.

"Alright!"

When she heard him agree, Laura was delighted. That’s how friendships should be, with give and take! Otherwise, she always felt she owed Counselor Xavier too much...

During the meal, they inevitably talked about Sean Vaughn.

"Sean Vaughn didn’t talk nonsense in front of you yesterday, did he?"

"Oh... him! He’s quite straightforward, told me a lot about your college days, even said you were the campus heartthrob back then."

Laura nibbled on her chopsticks, looking playful and cute, with no jealousy in her tone, just friendly teasing.

Jonah knew very well, it seemed Sean couldn’t control his mouth and must have talked nonsense in front of Laura, otherwise, she wouldn’t...

"Sean’s just chatty, but he’s quite good in other ways."

"I can tell, he’s enthusiastic and straightforward."

At this point, the conversation couldn’t really continue, so Jonah leisurely took a sip of tea, "Do you have any specific requirements for your next job?"

Laura finished chewing her food before she slowly spoke, "Not really, as long as the salary and benefits are decent, I’m good."

Jonah thought for a moment, "I do know of two possibilities, the first is a foreign company we often collaborate with, headquartered in Zarain, you might have to travel there often."

Laura nodded, "That’s fine!"

Jonah chuckled, "I haven’t even told you the second one yet!"

Laura also laughed, "I do have a bit of a quick temper."

Jonah continued, "Personally, I think with your degree and ability, you could completely apply for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is relatively more stable..."

Laura shook her head, "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is nice, but I still prefer corporate culture. Being a civil servant is too rigid, and with my personality, I probably wouldn’t fit in well. I prefer a more relaxed and free work environment."

Jonah gave her a look, "I was just suggesting. Ultimately, the decision is yours."

Laura smiled gently with lowered eyes, "I’m already very grateful for all your help."

Jonah remained as modest as ever, "After so many years as high school classmates, there’s no need to be so formal. I didn’t really help much, just suggested some avenues, but it’s up to you to apply and discuss in detail."

Hearing the words "high school classmates," a certain part of Laura’s heart suddenly felt enlightened. Maybe she was overthinking it! Counselor Xavier just wanted to help, with no ulterior motives...

"Yeah."

Laura’s departure quickly caused a great stir in the translation department at Aegis Group. Crystal Langley couldn’t wrap her head around it; so many people tried desperately to get in, yet Laura just left without hesitation...

Even daring to ignore the CEO’s assistant on the day she resigned, was she planning on ascending to heaven?

Quinn Chase and Violet Whitman reacted completely differently upon hearing about it. The former didn’t think much of it, "She must have been determined to leave, that’s why she became so bold! Usually, everyone’s respectful to Assistant Cross! Rarely do you get a chance to ignore him, it’s liberating! If it were me, I’d love such a chance too!"

Crystal Langley nodded thoughtfully, "Hmm! Makes sense! If they’re leaving, what’s there to be afraid of?"

Violet Whitman curled her lips into a mocking smile, "Perhaps they’re just relying on their strong backing?"

Crystal Langley and Quinn Chase looked at her simultaneously, "What do you mean? Do you know something we don’t?"

Violet Whitman shrugged, "I don’t know anything, just a guess."

Crystal Langley and Quinn Chase gave her a suspicious glance, "Really? You’ve been acting weird about Laura Quincy lately, your opinions are always different from ours. Honestly, have you discovered something?"

Violet Whitman played with her fingernails, "What could I have discovered? I just find Laura Quincy’s sudden resignation a bit odd, haven’t you noticed Team Leader Jennings’s mood has been very unstable recently?"

Crystal Langley lowered her voice, "Yup! It’s made everyone in Team Three uneasy, afraid of accidentally offending Team Leader Jennings and getting fired."

Quinn Chase added, "And have you noticed, Team Leader Jennings hasn’t been coming to the company as often, hasn’t shown up at all today."

Violet Whitman had a smile in her eyes, "Team Leader Jennings’s erratic emotions coincide with Laura Quincy’s resignation timing."

She always spoke just enough to trigger imagination.

Crystal Langley and Quinn Chase suddenly realized, "Wow! It does match up."

Paused for a moment, "But what does that signify?"

Violet Whitman rolled her eyes, "Forget it, pretend I didn’t say anything, I don’t know anything."

Then, she just left on her own.

Crystal Langley and Quinn Chase exchanged glances, both seeing something odd, Violet Whitman isn’t simple at all! She’s definitely discovered something but doesn’t want to tell them...

"Is Laura Quincy resigning because she offended Team Leader Jennings?"

"Why would she randomly offend Team Leader Jennings? Counselor Xavier even specifically requested Laura Quincy to be his translator! Logically, Team Leader Jennings shouldn’t be dismissing Laura Quincy now! Isn’t that clearly opposing Counselor Xavier?"

"Yeah! I really don’t get it."

As they were chatting, suddenly a female voice sounded behind them, "Did you just say Counselor Xavier specifically requested Laura Quincy to be his translator?"

Crystal Langley and Quinn Chase turned around, OMG! It was the president’s niece, Vivian Hawthorne!

"Uh..."

Vivian Hawthorne was somewhat displeased with their hesitance, "I’m asking you a question!"

Quinn Chase could only say, "Everyone in the translation department knows about it. Apparently, Counselor Xavier and Laura Quincy were high school classmates."

Vivian Hawthorne arrogantly said, "Where is Laura Quincy? Call her to meet me!"

Crystal Langley looked exasperated, "Miss Hawthorne, Laura Quincy has already resigned."

Vivian Hawthorne was puzzled, "Resigned? Where did she go?"

Crystal Langley shook her head, speaking frankly, "I don’t know, we’re not close with her."

Vivian Hawthorne gave them a suspicious look, haughtily saying, "You better not lie to me! Or I’ll have my third uncle fire you immediately!"

Crystal Langley and Quinn Chase quickly said in unison, "We wouldn’t dare deceive Miss Hawthorne!"

Vivian Hawthorne was finally satisfied and prepared to leave. She hadn’t come by in a few days and didn’t expect that woman named Laura Quincy to have already resigned, at least she knows the limits of her capability!

After taking a couple of steps, she turned around, "What about Counselor Xavier? Where is he now?"

Crystal Langley and Quinn Chase both shook their heads, "Haven’t seen Counselor Xavier today, we’re not sure."

Vivian Hawthorne wanted to ask more but realized they were just receptionists, unlikely to know any crucial information, and thus walked towards Stella Jennings’s office. Only asking her would be most clear.

Besides, now she’s on the same side as Stella...

The Jennings Family has been lively these days, filled with the joy of preparing for festivities.

Compared to the joyous mood of Serena Jennings, the Jennings Family feels like hell to her right now, even more torturous than hell...

Mrs. Jennings would always ask when she saw her, "Stella! You see, your sister and Jasper are about to get married. When are you and Jason Hawthorne planning to tie the knot?"

Stella Jennings felt a lump in her throat, only able to evade, "Mom, we’re not in a hurry."

Mrs. Jennings was anxious, "How could you not be? You’re already 27, if you don’t get married soon, you’ll be an old maid! You don’t know how every time I play cards with those ladies, what they say, my ears have grown calluses from hearing it all."

Stella Jennings felt her ears growing calluses too, "Mom, let them say what they want, you don’t have to listen."

Mrs. Jennings unhappily replied, "How can I not listen? They keep chattering in my ears, do you expect me to block their mouths?"

Stella Jennings simply chose not to continue the conversation. Chatting with her mother felt completely off-track, ever since Serena and Jasper’s marriage announcement, her mother kept nagging about it daily, making her feel like she was redundant living at home...
