Chapter 50: Bite The Hand Of God

We invent religion not because we are seeking god, but because we are running away from him.

Zane had the idol of the First Flame on his hand and to prove himself, he revealed that he had dropped the very same idol that everyone worshiped right beside the church.

Naturally, all mouths went wide open and Zane had no worry of people finding his words as lie because:

"It was you?"

"You were the one who did all that in the morning?"

"I couldn’t recognise you at all."

Zane had dropped the idol when these people must be present in the line for the offerings. So they knew.

However it was strange they didn’t recognise Zane on the first glance as he was covered with dried blood so it should be easy to notice him.

But then again, they rarely raised their heads in the presence of someone higher than them, it was likely they didn’t even see Zane’s face long enough to remember.

Nodding his head, Zane carried on:

"Yes. It was me. I dropped the idol. Not by mistake. By choice. And I am still alive to tell you about it."

"I also heard something like that happened today. So it was you." Jammy spoke and Zane turned around to face him.

"Yes. It was me. I have the courage to go against the rules made by them. And if it is still not enough to convince you, then I am alive because I had the support of an Emberlord Priest named Coin."

Gasps rang out again and they might have not raised their heads but they were surely able to hear Horum.

The Priest had said Zane was forgiven because he had some kind of relic that pardoned the first sin or crime of the receiver.

They just didn’t know the gutterborn that had something like that was in front of them and was ready to help them overcome their sufferings.

If Zane wanted he could just go to the Citadel and change only his life. He didn’t need to stop and argue for their rights or help them. Yet, he was doing it.

They saw Zane in a new light as his words were now heard with more interest than ever.

"I still have that relic with me. It has the emblem of Crown Aurex and it is extremely powerful in capable hands."

Zane still didn’t know that much about Crowns and the Priest rankings but he only shared what he knew.

Nonetheless, he shoved his hand inside his pocket and took it out.

He frowned after seeing it as it wasn’t glowing and wasn’t hot as before but he figured it was because of the lack of the sun at the moment.

It was orange and shining enough to convey its properties and Zane raised it high in the air.

"I have to return it tomorrow to the Emberlord but if he gave me such a thing then he must have seen something in me even when I told him nothing. It’s a pity that I have to shout to my own people to make them understand when an unknown man trusted me without me even speaking."

All eyes were glued to the shining relic including Jammy but the Janitor had a frown on his face.

"Show it to me for a second." He said.

Zane brought it down and placed the relic in front of Jammy’s eyes.

Jammy sighed. "I meant, give it to me for a second."

"No way." Zane instantly refused, stepped away and stored it back inside his pocket.

Jammy’s brows quivered and Zane remained stern.

"I will not just give it to you. It is not normal. It is extremely valuable and if something happened to it and the Emberlord didn’t like it, he would butcher me. People already call us thieves, I don’t want to contribute more to that stigma."

Jammy rolled his eyes.

"Alright. Show it to me again. I won’t touch it."

Zane stayed still but after a few seconds, he slowly took it out again and placed it in front of Jammy’s eyes. This time, a little far from him.

Jammy didn’t seem to mind it as he watched the relic closely.

As he watched, his frown deepened and in his straight voice, he blurted:

"It’s fake."

The crowd made some noises just after that and Zane, he simply chuckled.

"You think I was born yesterday?"

He removed the relic from Jammy’s eyes and stored it inside his pocket again.

"If it was fake, I wouldn’t be alive right now. You just want to touch it or steal it. Or you called it fake because you don’t want people to believe me. Because you are afraid that if they sided with me, how will you get your rent."

Jammy’s brows twitched.

"I wasn’t thinking anything like that. But if it saved your life, then it must be real. I could be wrong."

Jammy shrugged and Zane hadn’t thought that the man would just let it go that easily.

Nevertheless, he didn’t complain and gazed at the crowd once more.

The crowd also stared at him and it felt like it was the last time Zane would speak to them.

"Everything I said was true. Not one word was a lie. I was simply born with eyes that could see the pain. A heart that feels too much for its own good. I was powerless for eighteen years, but not once did I abandon the thought that I would change my and our fate. And today, now that I got to know how deeply the horrors exist inside all of you, I took my chance."

He roamed his head.

"If I hadn’t awakened anything worthwhile I would have also given up and let Mickey’s eye go after hearing Fork’s words. But now I have some power and a chance to change things little by little. And I am not doing any empty promises either. I will send you all some money from whatever I earn in the Citadel. You all can keep living like the way you are for all this time, but engrave this inside your heart..."

He paused, locked eyes with everyone present and in his deep voice, he declared:

"Change is coming and you will not wait another second to take it by its throat."

Zane stopped talking and stared at the people.

But not even a second had passed, when a voice rang out.

"I accept."

All eyes went there and they widened the moment they saw the owner of that voice.

Zane also turned around and saw the familiar smoke coming but the smoking man had his hand raised.

It was enough to reach to the fact that the first acceptance came from the hardest resistance.

Jammy the Janitor joined Zane.
