Chapter 649: Chapter 649: Gunshots

Gu Moqian’s lips curved into a cold arch, and he did not answer her words.

"Mo Qian, let me stay by your side. We’ll face this together—" Ji Wei had just grabbed the sleeve of Gu Moqian’s coat, trying to persuade him further, when suddenly a loud bang erupted. The study’s window instantly shattered, glass raining down and scattering across the floor.

Ji Wei was stunned by the deafening sound, her mind blank. Before she could react, a second gunshot followed.

BANG!

Ji Wei felt like her eardrums were about to burst.

At the very moment the gunfire rang out, Gu Moqian acted swiftly, pulling her into his arms and dodging behind the nearby bookcase.

Pressed against Gu Moqian’s chest, Ji Wei didn’t dare to move, her heart pounding as if it would leap out.

The study fell silent for a brief moment, only to be filled again with an unrelenting barrage of gunfire.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Objects were blasted apart, debris flying everywhere. Several bullets grazed past right in front of them. It was obvious the shooter outside the window knew exactly where they were hiding.

Gu Moqian’s facial features were sharp and cold, his gaze calm like a deep, unyielding pool. He glanced down at the woman in his arms; her face was pale, her hands clutching his shirt tightly, her body trembling faintly.

"Stay here. Don’t move." His voice suddenly came from above her, low and steady, not a trace of panic in it.

"Mo Qian..."

She looked up at him, just managing to call his name when the hand holding her waist abruptly let go.

She panicked, shaking her head. "Mo Qian, don’t!"

Gu Moqian pushed her against the wall, then swiftly leaped out.

Ji Wei clearly saw the bullets tracing a path of white smoke as they followed his movements. She watched in terror, her heart climbing into her throat.

Gu Moqian rolled expertly across the floor, positioning himself near the underside of the desk. Reaching out, he quickly pulled open a drawer and retrieved a handgun from inside.

Leaning sideways against the desk, he skillfully loaded the gun.

The gunfire continued unabated. Gu Moqian’s eyes were shadowed and cold. He slowly placed his trigger finger on the gun, then swiftly raised it, firing a shot upward.

The crystal chandelier shattered and crashed to the ground. The deafening sound made Ji Wei tremble, the fear in her heart swelling to new heights.

The study was suddenly plunged into total darkness.

Ji Wei didn’t dare move an inch. With the bookcase blocking her view, she had no idea what was happening now.

In the darkness, an eerie silence settled over the room.

The gunman outside the window couldn’t see what was going on inside, but Gu Moqian was already inching closer to the window. As soon as he spotted a shadow moving outside, he fired a shot without hesitation.

Ji Wei heard a muffled groan of pain, followed closely by several more gunshots.

Who had just been shot?

Could it be Mo Qian...?

Her hand gripped the corner of her clothes so tightly it almost tore, her heart racing uncontrollably.

Ji Wei bit down hard, trying to suppress her shaking, but her body’s trembling refused to stop. With eyes full of terror, she couldn’t bear it any longer and suddenly bolted out from hiding. "Mo Qian, are you okay?"

In the darkness, she couldn’t see a thing and could only glance around frantically.

"Get back! Who told you to come out?" Gu Moqian’s voice snapped at her through the darkness, harsh and severe.

"I..."

Ji Wei opened her mouth, but her words faltered, and she hurriedly retreated to her spot.

Judging by Gu Moqian’s tone just now, he didn’t seem to be injured. She exhaled in relief, clutching her chest as she steadied her breath.

At that moment, commotion erupted at the doorway to the study. The old butler, leading several male staff members from the manor, each armed with a handgun, charged into the room.

The sound of gunfire suddenly filled the air again, a relentless barrage that shook the entire study.

About ten seconds later, everything fell silent once more.
