Classless Awakening; My Dragon Is Legendary-Chapter 6: First Day Of Training
Derrick’s body lifted off the ground faster than he could process.
He fell to the ground, his body writhed in pain. He looked to his right, and there it was, a sword.
Derrick quickly drew the sword. He knew he couldn’t beat Royal Knight, but with his eleven years of sword training, he was confident in being able to defend himself.
[Task received]
[Defend yourself for one minute]
[Reward: +20% EXP]
Derrick drew breath, calming his nerves, and helping him to think clearly.
[Dragon Eyes activated]
The only thing in Derrick’s arsenal that could help him close the gap between both of them was his system and its skills.
Derrick’s vision became slightly darker around the edges, allowing him to focus clearly.
He could see the aura coming from the grass beneath him.
At the corner of Derrick’s eye, he saw a golden aura rapidly approaching him.
Derrick knew he was too slow to counter Royal Knight’s attack. His only chance was a parry which he executed perfectly.
Royal Knight was taken aback. He didn’t expect Derrick to be able to tell where he was coming from, at least not with such levels of training.
’It must be the dragon spirit. He’s learned how to tap into its power somehow.’ That was the only possible explanation Royal Knight could come up with.
Royal Knight decided not to blitz Derrick, and to test his sword skills.
Royal Knight moved gracefully, his blade danced in the air, moving masterfully with an elegant flow.
He had practiced these moves multiple times before, swordsmanship had become second nature to him.
Derrick tried to keep up. Each attack he blocked, sending a powerful vibration traveling through his hand that made them grow weaker.
’I need to attack.’ Derrick’s eyes scanned Royal Knight, trying to find an opening.
Even with Derrick’s dragon eyes and being able to roughly tell where Royal Knight would be, he still couldn’t find a weakness in Royal Knight’s defenses.
Derrick went in blindly for an attack, hoping that the gods would smile upon him, but his hopes were quickly burnt to ashes.
Royal Knight blocked his attack, sending sparks flying, and quickly countered with a strike to Derrick’s side.
The steel ripped through Derrick’s flesh, making him release a painful scream.
Royal Knight flinched, he stared at his sword, which had been tainted with the blood of the prince he swore to protect.
In Royal Knight’s moment of weakness, Derrick saw an opening and exploited it.
His sword clattered to the ground, he closed the distance in the blink of an eye.
Faint red energy gathered around Derrick’s hands courtesy of the dragon’s fist.
Just before Derrick could deliver his attack, Royal Knight swept him off his feet.
Derrick fell face-first into the grass, and Royal Knight’s sword hovered above his throat.
"You lasted a minute, that’s impressive," Royal Knight said, pride in his voice.
[Task Complete.]
[+20% EXP has been rewarded.]
He knelt down to meet Derrick, a soft white glow appeared in his gloves, and as soon as they touched Derrick, his wounds healed.
"I am sorry, my prince," Royal Knight said with remorse.
The idea of him hurting Derrick was something he never thought possible.
"All is well," Derrick said, tired. He understood why Royal Knight did what he did, and he bore no grudges.
"It seems Thompson trained you well," Royal knight had to admit.
"Your proficiency with the sword is greater than most your age." Royal Knight had seen many prodigies, but Derrick was on another level.
"Thank you." Derrick smiled. Royal Knight’s words meant a lot to him.
"How good are you with your fists?" Royal Knight was curious.
He had seen how Derrick dropped his sword, and was ready to use his fists earlier.
"I barely have anyone to practice with, but I’m good enough," Derrick said honestly.
Using your fists instead of a sword in this day and age was unconventional. Fists didn’t have much range, and didn’t do nearly as much damage.
Despite this, Derrick had always been fascinated by the idea of using his fists, and he secretly trained.
"I see, I’d want us to test your fists later," Royal Knight proposed.
"Are you serious?" Derrick asked, his eyes lit up. Finally, he had seen someone to train with.
"Yes, there may be instances where you lose your sword. Learning how to use your fists would be your only way to cope," Royal Knight said, thinking this through in his head.
To make Derrick the absolute fighting machine, he needed to train him in everything, no matter how small or irrelevant.
If he wanted to cover the gap between himself and a person with magic, then he would need to do a lot.
"To the best of my knowledge, knights do not train for fist fights." Derrick had done extensive studying, and never did he once come across knights fist fighting.
If anything, it was considered disrespectful and barbaric for a knight to fight using his fists instead of his sword.
"I am no ordinary knight." Royal Knight knew his training.
"So, when do we start?" Derrick was eager to start his training. The earlier he did, the better. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
"For now, I want to focus more on strengthening your body and mind. If I start really training you, you may die." Royal Knight had seen many people die from training less brutal than what he had in mind.
Derrick gulped hard, he was slowly becoming less eager to continue his training.
"I believe I am already strong in body and mind." Derrick had gone through hell with Sir Thompson.
Sir Thompson had trained him for eleven years, his body had been conditioned since childhood.
"If I tried to teach you Varyn, in your current physical state, your body would implode." Royal Knight’s words sent shivers down Derrick’s spine.
"How many push-ups can you do?" Royal Knight asked.
"Roughly about two hundred," Derrick responded pridefully.
Royal Knight placed his hand on his chin, trying to find the best possible route for Derrick’s training.
"I need you to do two thousand," Royal Knight said, his voice stern.
Derrick was speechless, two thousand push-ups were definitely past the human limit.
"You can pause as many times as you want, but I need you to start now!" Royal Knight’s voice sent a shiver down Derrick’s spine.
It was now it was beginning to register. Royal Knight wasn’t just his friend or his bodyguard, he was now his mentor.
Derrick didn’t ask questions or delay any further. The earlier he started, the better.
Ten minutes in, Derrick had already completed five hundred, and he hadn’t paused, neither was he out of breath.
’It’s thanks to the system, your speed, strength and other physical attributes have increased.’
Derrick smirked, but he didn’t get too happy, he could already feel his body start to weaken and fatigue creeping in.
Thirty minutes in, Derrick managed to complete one thousand, and his arms gave up on him.
Derrick’s breath was rapid and erratic, his eyes were red, and he could feel itching all over.
His body had pushed itself to the absolute limit, his body was exhausted.
"You can take a break, but you need to make sure you do this," Royal Knight said mercilessly.
He couldn’t have Derrick slacking off each training session left undone was equal to a higher chance of death.
"Drink." Royal Knight handed Derrick water. He couldn’t bear to see Derrick in such agonizing pain.
Derrick drank the water in a matter of seconds, refreshing his body.
Derrick rested for a full hour, and went back to it. This time, he broke the push-ups into groups of two hundred, taking breaks in between.
It took him four hours to complete, but he did, impressing both himself and Royal Knight.
’I didn’t think he’d be able to do it.’ Royal Knight stared at Derrick, shock written all over his face which was blocked by his helmet.
’I know the dragon spirit must be strong, but this boy is a beast,’ Royal Knight thought to himself.
During his own training, he was told to do five hundred push-ups, but he failed, and here Derrick was.
’This kid has the potential to surpass even me.’ Royal Knight was proud, but he was also scared.
’His father was right, if the storm in him stirs, this boy could be the end of us all.’ Royal Knight was glad the king asked him to start training Derrick now.
That way, he could guide Derrick if he ever decided to stray.
Derrick laughed, he didn’t expect himself to be able to complete it, but he did.
[+1 physical ability.]
"What is next?" Derrick asked confidently. If he completed this task, then he was confident in being able to complete anyone that came his way.
Royal Knight could see the arrogance in Derrick, and the urge to humble him crept in.
Royal Knight pointed at a wooden doll in the distance, it had a sword in its hands.
"You must defeat that."
