Chapter 5: Training Of The Royal Knight

Inside his room, the first thing Derrick did was to listen to his father.

He took a long bath, changed his clothes and washed his hair, before trimming it down to shoulder length.

Derrick’s eyes were glued to the mirror, his face had become more defined, and his brown eyes had gotten lighter, making them appear almost red.

As a trained warrior, he could feel his increase in speed and strength.

"Whatever happened to me that day really changed me."

As those words left Derrick’s mouth, he remembered the system from earlier.

As soon as the thought crossed his mind, the system reappeared.

[Host, would you like your orientation now?]

Derrick stared at those words, his mind going through multiple possibilities.

Derrick sighed, this was something he had never dealt with before, there was no way he could understand it just yet.

’Yes, start the orientation.’ Derrick sat on a chair, ready to experience whatever was next.

[Host, you have inherited the greatest source of power known to this world.]

"The greatest known power is that of the gods." Derrick repeated the words which had been drilled into his head from a young age.

[The gods are powerful, yes, but you have the potential to be even more powerful.]

Those words lit up Derrick’s eyes and his hope returned. If what this system was saying was true, he had the chance to defeat the dark beasts.

Suddenly, his magicless state didn’t matter anymore. He could still become someone powerful.

’What task must I complete for this power?’ Derrick knew nothing came freely.

For such a power, there must be a price. Derrick was old enough to know how the world worked.

[There is no price for this power, you just need to complete the necessary tasks to grow your level and power.]

"What tasks?" Derrick asked, praying it was not something unconventional.

[The system analyzes your current situation and pushes you to complete tasks based on what is best for you.]

"Do I have any of those tasks right now?" Derrick asked, eager to grow his power.

[No, whenever such tasks are available, the system shall inform you. ]

’Well, how powerful am I now?’ Derrick asked, curious.

[Here are your stats, they display full information on you at all times.]

[Name: Derrick Dravania.]

[Race: Human.]

[Age: 18.]

[Level: 1.]

[Experience: 0%]

[Health: 100%]

[Energy: 100%]

[Magical affinity: 0 unlocked. ]

[Mana points: Null.]

[Magical Talent: Grandmaster.]

[Physical ability: 1.]

[Skills: 3]

Derrick analyzed each stat carefully, some he understood, the rest he didn’t.

"Why am I seeing 0 magical affinity unlocked?" Derrick asked.

[That is because, out of the infinite magical affinities this system could offer, you have awakened none.]

"Are you telling me that this system could give me infinite magical affinities?" Derrick asked, just to confirm.

From what he knew, one magical affinity was the norm, some individuals managed to awaken two, and an even lesser percentage awakened three.

But hearing that he had the potential to awaken infinite magical affinities was something that shocked him to the core.

’With that power, I can rid the world of dark beasts.’ Derrick’s thoughts ran wild.

The thought of him killing dark beasts with a single thought gave him relentless joy.

[Hold your horses, it’ll take quite some time before you start.]

Derrick sighed, Dravania wasn’t built in a day, so he didn’t expect himself to go from being weak to strong in the span of a few days.

’My mana points, why are they null?’ Derrick asked.

[Mana points are the energy you draw on to cast a spell. You lack any magical affinity, therefore, you lack any mana points.]

Derrick nodded. That made sense. Another thing he didn’t fully understand was the physical ability stat.

[Physical ability measures everything physical; your strength, speed, durability, and many more.]

"I see." Derrick’s brain was working fast to assimilate what he was seeing.

This whole thing was too sudden for him, it was similar to giving a caveman a television.

’And the percentages, just go over it.’ Derrick had a rough idea, but he wanted to know more, in order to avoid any confusion.

[The system percentages work on a very simple principle.]

The system paused, allowing Derrick to digest the information.

[Zero percent stands for the lowest possible percentage for that level, and one hundred percent is the greatest.]

’So a hundred percent health in level 3 is different from a hundred percent health in level 1?’ Derrick asked.

[Precisely.]

The system quelled his curiosity.

A smile appeared on Derrick’s face, he couldn’t believe his luck.

At first, he had lost all hope of ever becoming something meaningful in life.

But, with this system, he could very well be the most powerful being to ever exist.

The system even had the power to rival the gods, and if he could do so, then he was on the path to becoming the most powerful being to walk this world.

[Don’t forget your skills.] The system’s notification appeared.

[Skills are akin to magical affinity, but they are not rigid or fixed, and draw their source from your energy.]

Derrick stared at the system confused. The system detected his confusion and decided to explain further.

[Your skills are just that, skills, but some of these skills consume energy. ]

’I see, what skills do I possess?’ Derrick asked eagerly.

[Dragon Eyes.]

[Info:This skill boosts your eyesight and allows you to see into the spiritual plane, letting you read a person’s aura.]

[Cost: None (Passive).]

[Passive skills cost no energy.]

[Dragon Flash.]

[This skill grants you an explosive, short burst of speed.]

[Cost: 10% energy.]

[Dragon Fist.]

[This skill coats your fists in dragon energy, increasing the overall power of your attack.]

[Cost: 10% energy.]

Derrick nodded as he read through his skills. He saw the skills as a way to start growing stronger now, without needing magic.

While Derrick was still staring at his system, he heard three rhythmical knocks on his door, a trait of Royal Knight.

Derrick opened the door, and there he was, standing in his shining armor with his sword sheathed.

In all honesty, Derrick admired Royal Knight, he was one of the strongest people he had ever seen.

The multiple assassination attempts on Derrick had all been foiled by Royal Knight, and most of the time, he didn’t even need to draw his sword.

"Prince Derrick, come." Royal Knight said, his tone fully serious.

"What’s wrong Royal Knight?" Derrick stepped out and closed his door.

"I can’t say here, we need to go somewhere different." Royal Knight placed his hand on Derrick’s shoulder, and they both vanished.

Derrick was no longer outside his room, and instead he was in a beautifully cut garden with bare grass spanning for miles.

The garden fenced the grass, which held wooden dolls and various training equipment.

"What are we doing here?" Derrick asked. He and Royal Knight barely went anywhere together besides royal events.

"Prince Derrick, your father has asked something of me, something which would be hard for me to see through." Royal Knight’s voice was serious and it scared Derrick.

"Your words are making me panic, what’s happening?" Derrick asked, trying to stay calm.

"You are aware of your numerous brothers, and their relentless attempts to harm you?" Royal Knight asked.

How could Derrick forget, ever since he had been born? His brothers had been constantly in his life, having a grandmaster talent, and being their father’s favorite, meant he was most likely to win the tournament of princes.

"I am," Derrick responded, trying not to let his emotions rise.

"Now that word of your magicless state has traveled, the attempts on your life will be increased by tenfold," Royal Knight explained, and Derrick understood.

"I may not always be there to protect you, so your father has tasked me with training you," Royal Knight continued.

"Well, I’ve already been trained by Sir Thompson, and what level of training can make me strong enough to compete with magic?" It didn’t matter how well Derrick could swing a sword, magic would always win.

"What Sir Thompson put you through is nothing compared to what I have in mind," Royal knight said honestly.

"I will train you even more brutally than the way I was." Royal Knight couldn’t let Derrick slack off, he needed to rapidly close the distance between him and magical people.

"So, Prince Derrick, I am sorry, but from now on, I may harm you, but it’s for your own good. Please forgive me." Royal Knight went down on one knee, a sign of respect for his prince.

"I understand what must be done." Derrick knew it was for his own good, without this training, he might as well commit suicide.

"But you didn’t answer my earlier question, what kind of training can compete with magic?" Derrick asked once more.

Royal knight stretched his hand, aiming for a wooden doll in the distance.

He took a deep breath, and in the blink of an eye, the doll burst into multiple pieces, sending wood everywhere.

"What was that?" Derrick asked. He had seen magic, but that was different.

It lacked the grace of magic, it lacked its charm, this was something different, something entirely new.

"That was Varyn, the ancient art I will be teaching you, starting now." With that, Royal Knight was nowhere to be seen, and Derrick felt a sharp pain from behind.
