Chapter 23: Varyn Control

Derrick’s mind latched onto the sensation, with every drop of willpower in him, he tried to pull the Varyn in, but all to no avail.

Sure, the Varyn was flowing into his hands, but it didn’t respond to his command or control.

[Foreign energy detected.]

A system message appeared before Derrick, who was struggling to hold his concentration.

[Does the host wish to expel this energy?]

’No!’ Derrick responded immediately, dispelling the system.

His focus had wavered, but it was still standing or at least struggling to.

"Calm yourself Derrick, there’s no need to be tense." Royal Knight warned.

Derrick took in a deep breath, his heart rate slowed, and his body relaxed.

The calmness instantly boosted his focus, allowing him to sense the energy flowing through his hands once more.

"This stage usually takes a few days or about a week to fully master." Royal Knight didn’t want Derrick pushing himself, thinking it was something that could be done today.

Sure, Derrick was talented, but it would take anyone at least a day to get a grip on how to manipulate the foreign energy invading them.

Royal Knight continued sending waves of Varyn into Derrick, adjusting the waves by making them more or less powerful, depending on Derrick’s reaction.

Each time, Derrick kept trying his best, trying with every lick of focus in him, but it just didn’t work out.

"It’s enough Derrick." Royal Knight pulled his hands away from Derrick’s.

"Come on, we can keep trying." Derrick urged, he didn’t want to rest until he got what he needed.

"We’ve been trying for 5 hours." Royal knight’s words came as a shock to Derrick.

To him, it had only been about thirty minutes, he had no idea that such time had passed.

"And if I keep going any longer, your hands may destabilize." Royal Knight warned. He stood to his feet and checked something on his wrist.

His face went through multiple emotions. All which were hidden by his mask.

"Derrick, my help is needed elsewhere." Royal Knight’s voice was strange, Derrick could have sworn he sounded... Panicked?

"Why? What’s wrong?" Derrick asked, the immediate switch from calm to tension was evident.

"Nothing. Go to your room, I’ve stationed some capable guards outside in my absence." Royal Knight responded.

"You know what happened the last time." Derrick’s words stung Royal Knight, but alas, there was nothing he could do.

The kingdom was at war, and he was too great of an asset to abandon the battleground and protect only the prince.

Even the king, who loved Derrick more than anything knew Royal Knight needed to be on the warfront.

They needed Royal Knight to keep the battle as far away from Dravania for as long as possible.

"I’m sorry Derrick, but you need to go." Royal Knight snapped his fingers, and Derrick’s body began to shimmer.

Derrick was about to say something when his body vanished into thin air.

Derrick sighed, exhausted. His mind refused to be at rest.

[I would suggest you familiarize yourself with your new skills.]

The system flared to life with messages that sparked curiosity

’New skills?’ Derrick asked the first question that came to mind.

He had been too busy with training and many others to check his system recently.

Derrick smirked, with these new skills one very vital flaw had been fixed.

With his dragon claw, he could finally use long ranged attacks.

Regularly, Derrick had always needed to head in close for an attack, which usually gave his opponent more chances of attacking.

But now, that advantage had been completely erased. It wasn’t that big of a difference, but it was a start.

In Derrick’s mind, he could tell that the dragon claws wouldn’t be overly powerful, at least not yet.

Derrick activated his dragon eyes, he looked through his door and truly guards were stationed outside.

He looked around him, there was nothing for him to do, and he couldn’t help but shake the feeling that something evil lurked in the corner.

His eyes darted to his window, and memories of times when he tried to sneak out flashed in his mind.

Previously, his attempts had always been foiled by Royal Knight.

But, with Royal Knight’s absence, he had a chance to do what he pleased.

’I don’t think these other guards can break my room’s enchantment.’ Derrick analyzed.

His room was coated in more than enough runes to maintain utmost privacy, which should prevent the guards from finding out he wasn’t in bed.

He waited until the moon was at its peak, giving him the advantage of the night.

Derrick put on an old scarf that covered his face well, a long coat to hide his distinct body shape, and finally, a cane to make him appear as an old man.

He leaped out of his window, using air step to catch himself, and land masterfully.

Deep down inside Derrick, he could tell that something wasn’t exactly right.

There was something beyond the war, and beyond his brother, something that was calling out to him from the great beyond.

A darkness unlike any other, and Derrick wasn’t going to just sit on his hands, his curiosity outgrew his caution.

And it was that same curiosity which threatened to put Derrick in critical danger.
