Chapter 19: Brilliant Escape

Derrick leaped into the air, anger burning in his eyes.

Vora smirked, she swung one of her hands, and this time, Derrick didn’t dodge. No. He held onto the hand and pulled it with all his strength.

Vora’s eyes widened in shock, she anchored herself to the ground using her other hands.

’This boy’s strength is... Inhuman.’ Vora could see it, this wasn’t any normal boy.

She had been told it was an easy job, just a simple assassination of the magicless prince.

She had been told the Almighty Royal Knight would be nowhere to be found.

Nothing would have prepared her to face someone like Derrick.

Vora used two of her hands to push herself up, allowing her to suspend herself in the air.

Right now, she had four water hands free, one held a sword, the other a shield, and the remaining two were whips.

Derrick charged forward, and both water whips shot towards him in response.

Derrick dodged the first one, and the second, letting them fly past him.

His hands wrapped around both of them, and with all his strength, he pulled them forward.

[Author’s Note: Vora’s water whips aren’t exactly solid.

She’s just using her willpower and mana to hold it together, forcing the water to hold its shape and become more rigid, creating what is known as a water construct, which is why Derrick can hold it.]

Vora’s body moved, closing the distance between her and Derrick.

She quickly re-strategized and used her water sword to stab into Derrick’s stomach.

Derrick gritted his teeth, but he refused to let the water whips go.

He tugged them forward once more, disrupting Vora.

Vora slammed her shield into Derrick, forcing him to let go.

Derrick groaned, but there wasn’t much time for him to recover.

All four arms slammed into him from different sides, breaking several bones.

[-50% Health.]

Derrick’s body collapsed onto the ground, blood oozing out of his orifices.

’No, not here.’ Derrick screamed in his head, this was not the time or the place for him to die.

His healing did its work, restoring him to fighting conditions.

’Anger won’t work here.’ Derrick’s vision slowly returned to normal.

He couldn’t win this battle with his anger or his calmness. No, he needed a mix of both.

All four arms lunged towards Derrick, and Derrick rolled away, picking up his blade from the ground.

[Dragon Flash.]

Derrick’s body rocketed forward, but was met with several approaching water arms.

He leaped into the air, but this time, he had a trick up his sleeve.

[Air step.]

Derrick’s body ascended once more, gaining more altitude.

’Flight magic?’ Vora asked herself, that was the only explanation.

[Dragon flash.]

Midair, Derrick’s body increased its velocity, bringing him inches away from Vora.

Vora moved her water shield to block Derrick’s incoming attack.

Derrick’s blade burned with pure dragon energy, allowing him to slice through the blade and Vora herself.

Vora was taken aback, but she knew she couldn’t let herself be too distracted or shocked, she had seen what happened to Malum.

[Dragon Fist.]

Derrick’s fists crashed into Vora, making her stumble backwards.

Derrick’s body fell to the floor, and he rolled forward, dissipating the force of the fall.

’Those basic attacks wouldn’t do anything,’ Derrick admitted.

He had only gotten Malum thanks to surprise and shock, but Vora was proving to be even more difficult.

Vora dispelled her water hands. She cast a spell and a water pentagram appeared around her.

From each end of the pentagram, water shot out like a jet.

Derrick dodged the jets of water, but then at the last second, they all swerved, hitting Derrick.

The pressure from the water sent Derrick flying once again.

Derrick used air step to stabilize himself, before landing.

"There is no use dodging, these jets are locked onto their target," Vora explained, and Derrick gritted his teeth.

The pentagram spun, and another wave of water shot from their sides.

Derrick’s mind spun, trying to find an answer to this situation as fast as he could.

[Dragon Flash.]

Derrick ran, and the water jets followed him. He planned to somehow make the water hit Vora, but his plan was cut short.

The ground beneath his feet turned muddy, and his body fell through.

The ground hardened once more, trapping half of Derrick’s body beneath the sand.

Derrick tried to push himself out, but the water jets slammed into him, breaking his spine and leaving him paralyzed.

Derrick’s eyes scanned through the training grounds, and fear overtook his mind.

The doll’s broken body was visible in the distance, and all four assassins surrounded him.

Vora chanted once more and a wave of water enveloped Derrick.

Another chant followed Vora’s, and a thick bolt of lightning struck the water, electrocuting Derrick.

[Health: 1%]

Instantly, it hit Derrick, his vision became blurry, his mind became weaker, and with every breath he drew, he could feel himself drawing closer to the end.

Sure, his healing had kicked in, but Derrick could feel his consciousness begin to slip away.

He was a second away from his death, and if he didn’t do anything soon, then he would cross death’s door.

Derrick tried to speak, but he could barely even muster the strength to breathe.

"Save your strength, use it in your last prayers," one of the assassins said.

A deep sense of dread overcame Derrick, there was no way out of this, or so he thought.

In his last moments, he saw something. Thanks to his dragon eyes, he could easily see the runes that made up this place.

’I know I’ve not been the best of people, but please help me.’ Derrick pleaded with the system.

[I can only help you, if you help yourself]

Derrick heaved a sigh, he slammed both hands to the ground, creating cracks that weakened its structure and allowed him to break free.

All assassins moved in at once, preparing to destroy Derrick.

[Dragon Flash.]

Derrick sped right past them, every step he took sent waves of pain through his body.

In a matter of seconds, he arrived at the exit of the training ground, with the assassins hot on his tail.

Like a man possessed, his hand lifted itself and struck several runes in rapid succession.

’Thank you.’ Derrick thanked the system. He didn’t fully understand what the system had done, but he knew it held value.

As he stumbled from the training room, his body crumpled to the floor with a sickening thud, unconscious.
