Chubby Mommy: Scheming Daddy, Surrender Now!-Chapter 306: Persistence
Today, Linda Bennett has a day off. After finishing a call with her son, she tells him that Roman Aldrin isn’t home and he should come back now.
Over the past few days since her son ran away, she has had a good talk with her husband. They admitted they have been somewhat of failures in parenting, but using corporal punishment on their son now will only further alienate them from him.
Linda wants to have a more thorough conversation with her son in a calm manner. She believes her son is inherently kind-hearted but single-minded, which is why he is so persistent about Gwen Yates.
Unexpectedly, Skylar Aldrin bursts in excitedly, takes a couple of sips of water, and says something that gives her a headache, "Mom, why don’t you make Ethan Sterling’s wife your goddaughter?"
What’s he thinking? She’s only about ten years older than Ruby Sullivan. Make her a goddaughter?
She looks at her son with a bewildered expression, feeling the urge, like his father, to smack some sense into him.
"Mom, don’t get mad, listen to me first." Though Skylar Aldrin has always been emotionally clueless, he’s spot-on with his mom’s emotions, probably due to some survival instinct. Without his mom, he’d likely have been beaten to death by his dad.
"My suggestion isn’t just for Gwen Yates; I’m also touched by Ethan Sterling’s love for his wife."
Although Linda Bennett and Roman Aldrin seem to be a respectful couple in public, Roman Aldrin’s true affection was for a girl who danced in an art troupe. She rejected his advances for the sake of her dancing and remains single to this day. Over the years, they have kept their friendship without crossing any boundaries but maintain contact.
Linda has clashed with Roman over this numerous times. When Skylar was young, she insisted on relocating for work due to this. Skylar witnessed his mother’s tears numerous times, growing to see his father as the bad guy and his mother as too weak to fight back, leading to his current personality.
Last night, seeing Ethan’s care and hearing his considerate words for his wife filled him with both envy and admiration, inspiring him to suggest making Ruby Sullivan a goddaughter as a way to support her and bolster her position.
"If Dad could love you like that, we would be a really happy family, right?" Skylar Aldrin turned away, looking wistful.
Linda, touched by her son bringing up painful memories, felt her eyes well up. After a moment, she said, "Making someone a goddaughter isn’t a trivial matter; I need to discuss it with your dad, and he likely won’t agree."
"Can’t you stop always mentioning my dad, as if you don’t know anything without him?" Skylar particularly dislikes his mother saying things like that, even irrationally hating it.
Frowning, Linda didn’t want to argue, "There are plenty of ways to support Ruby Sullivan better than making her a goddaughter; don’t worry about it." She really likes that girl, probably because she possesses the assertiveness and boldness Linda lacks, but it’s clear Ruby is a well-protected wife.
Hearing his mom’s concession, Skylar’s eyes sparkled, "That’s good enough. I’ll go find Ethan Sterling now."
"Hang on!" Linda furrowed her brow, "Where have you been staying these past few days?"
Skylar thought for a moment, deciding to keep it simple; he didn’t want to mention he’s been staying in a hotel with Gwen Yates, fearing his mom might develop a bad opinion of Gwen. "I’ve been staying at school, where else."
"I went looking for you at school." Though she might say otherwise, a mother’s worries never truly rest when her son doesn’t answer calls and has no money.
Linda sighed, "If you’re determined to be with Gwen Yates, I won’t interfere. Just make sure to think it through."
Skylar paused, a bit disbelieving, then happily hugged his mom, "Mom, don’t worry, Gwen’s a good girl, and we’ll be great together."
With that, he dashed out the door with the breeze, heading to resolve the matter with Ethan Sterling and put Gwen’s mind at ease.
In Skylar’s eyes, this whole thing was a misunderstanding, and the only real culprit is Julian Lowe. If he hadn’t acted out after drinking, none of this would have happened. Seeing Ethan last night, Skylar even found himself admiring him a bit.
To show such patience and kindness to his wife—Skylar isn’t sure if he could ever manage that himself. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
The more Skylar thought about it, the more he found Ethan Sterling impressive. At Nirvana, he single-handedly dealt with five of them with ease. No doubt he’s running a successful business and making lots of money.
Reaching the first floor of Sterling Tower, Skylar realized he couldn’t go up without an appointment or Ethan’s phone number, so he called his mom for help. After she got Ethan on the phone, he was allowed to go up.
When he arrived, the secretary asked him to wait a moment. After five minutes, a man came out with some documents, and then he was let in.
"You seem busy." Skylar sat down across from him with a friendly air.
"Yes, if you have something to say, go ahead." Ethan focused on the documents, not bothering to look up.
Skylar felt a bit embarrassed. Just as he was about to speak, someone knocked on the door, "Mr. Sterling, Flynn Quinn."
"Come in!"
"Mr. Sterling, the second phase project of the Bayside Resort needs your approval." Flynn said, handing over the documents.
Ethan rapidly skimmed through over ten pages of agreement terms, encircling several figures, "Next time, don’t bring this kind of stuff here, or you won’t have to show up again."
Flynn was startled. Taking a closer look, he saw errors in some construction material funding records, "I’ll correct it right away." He said and quickly left.
Similar incidents happened thrice more. After witnessing Ethan’s level of busy-work intensity, Skylar took a break to convey his mom’s intentions.
"Thank Mrs. Aldrin for her kind offer, but my wife doesn’t want to network this way." Ethan closed a file and looked up at him, "Anything else?"
"What about Gwen Yates’ issue?" Skylar felt guilty.
"Since you have no equivalent exchange offer, things will remain as they are." Ethan said, opening another document.
"That’s not fair," Skylar protested, slapping the table and standing up. Under Ethan’s gaze, he meekly sat back down, "Mr. Sterling, Gwen Yates is my girlfriend. This whole incident is just a misunderstanding; you can’t possibly want me to conduct a prison romance right after getting a girlfriend?"
"Why can’t I?"
Why not? Skylar was at a loss.
Taking a deep breath, he desperately searched for words, "From an old friend’s standpoint, I hope you can forgive her this once. Who knows, maybe Julian Lowe fooled her too. When he wanted to create trouble, he might have claimed he was directed to do so."
Ethan Sterling couldn’t fathom how much Skylar liked Gwen Yates to come up with such illogical excuses. Watching him plead fiercely reminded Ethan of himself at that age.
Back then, he had no personal feelings and acted mechanically. If he had any aspirations, it was purely to prove he had the capability to lead The Sterling Group and validate his own existence.
"Alright, if the Yates Family is willing to compensate for the damages Nirvana suffered due to your vandalism and if Gwen Yates apologizes to my wife, I’ll agree to drop the charges." He said, tearing a note from a pad, "This is the compensation amount."
Skylar picked it up and felt dizzy looking at the string of zeros, "You didn’t write even the decimal points, did you?"
