Chubby Mommy: Scheming Daddy, Surrender Now!-Chapter 239: Unable to Meet
When Ethan Sterling saw her tears, he felt a bit flustered, but seeing the smile in her eyes, he felt settled again. He could somewhat understand this post-calamity survival feeling.
Mama Bennett arrived with porridge and toiletries, and Ruby Sullivan had already fallen asleep again. She waited for Ethan to finish his shower, then left with the dirty clothes. In the afternoon, when she returned for the second time, she finally caught Ruby when she was awake.
She talked a lot about the two children’s circumstances, mentioning that the doctors advised her condition was still unstable, so they didn’t dare to bring the kids to see her. As she spoke, she felt a lump in her throat, "Oh, dear, you’ve really suffered."
"It’s alright." Ruby, on the contrary, began to console her, handing her a tissue.
Seeing this, Ethan felt a bit anxious, "Mama Bennett, please control yourself; Ruby can’t handle too much emotional upheaval right now."
Although she had passed the critical period, too much emotional turmoil could cause her wound to bleed again, which would be very dangerous.
"Oh dear, I really am..." Mama Bennett said as she hastily wiped away her tears and stood up, "Well, I’ll be heading back now and will see you tomorrow."
Ruby watched Mama Bennett leave, sighed involuntarily, and murmured with a bit of disappointment, "I wonder how are the two little ones at home."
"With Mama Bennett taking care of them, you don’t need to worry. If you get through these three days without any issues, you’ll be able to have them come to see you." Ethan got up to help her lie down, gently massaging her head to lull her to sleep.
Ruby thought she had slept for most of the day and wasn’t lacking in sleep, but soon her eyelids felt heavy, and she began to find it hard to keep her eyes open.
Over the course of three days, Ruby mostly drifted in and out of sleep. Apart from Mama Bennett coming daily to bring food and sitting with her for a while to talk about how the kids were doing at home, Ethan almost never left her side.
Although his assistant had brought him a computer, he seemed to only work when she was asleep. As long as her eyes were open, he would keep her company, whether they were watching TV, peeling an apple for her, or even doing nothing but sitting by the window, staring outside into space.
Early this morning, Howard came to the Sterling Family’s home to pick up Honey and Seth. The two kids had made an effort to dress up, having not seen their mother for a long time; they were both very excited.
Howard escorted the little ones to the car and noticed Brandon Sullivan also intending to go with them, and quickly raised his arms to block him.
"Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Sterling specifically instructed that you cannot go to the hospital."
Brandon Sullivan huffed and puffed indignantly, "Why can’t I go see my daughter?"
Howard wore a formulaic smile, unfazed by his temper. "Mr. Sullivan, Ma’am currently doesn’t have the energy to discuss Rhonda’s matters with you."
Unwilling to relent, Brandon quipped, "Do you think you can prevent me from seeing my daughter forever? What is Ethan Sterling scheming?"
Howard didn’t want to waste more time with him. Seeing that he wasn’t making a move to get in the car, Howard stopped arguing and turned to get in the vehicle.
Honey couldn’t understand why Grandpa wasn’t allowed to go to the hospital. He seemed to have been looking forward to it last night, so she asked Howard why.
"Uncle Howard, Grandpa is mommy’s dad; mom hasn’t seen her dad for so many days, of course she’ll miss him. Why don’t you take him along? There’s still space in the car."
Turning to her, Howard smiled and explained, "Honey, your mom is currently very weak, and she can only see you and Seth. After seeing both of you, she wouldn’t be able to see your grandpa."
Ethan had forewarned him, so he had already prepared an excuse, not wanting the kids to get too involved in adult affairs.
Seth, with his astute mind, knew Howard was lying, but from eavesdropping on Grandpa’s complaints over the days, he had guessed some of the real reasons, so he whispered to Honey, "Later, don’t mention Grandpa to Mom."
"Why?" Honey didn’t understand again.
"Mom can’t see Grandpa now. If you mention it too much, it will make Mom miss him a lot, and is it not troublesome for Mom to miss Grandpa but not be able to see him?"
This was something Honey understood; she had missed her mom a lot these days but couldn’t see her, so she quickly nodded, "I understand."
Listening to the siblings’ conversation, Howard couldn’t help but mentally give Seth a thumbs up; this little master’s intelligence was truly exceptional.
At the hospital, Ruby was nervous thinking about the kids coming to visit. She wore a heart rate monitor on her wrist, and if her heart rate exceeded one hundred twenty, the visit would be cut short. All this was for her health.
Upon seeing her mother on the bed, Honey immediately smiled and went up to her, "Mom, I missed you so much."
Following behind, Seth also leaned on the bedside, "Mom."
"Mom missed you both very much too," Ruby said, smiling, ruffling their heads, and trying hard not to let her tears flow, though her chest felt like it was stuffed with cotton, which burned painfully.
Ethan, who was beside them, kept a close watch on her heart rate and timely reminded her, "Deep breaths, Ruby, you need to stay calm."
Seeing this, Seth gently pulled Honey aside, making a shushing gesture, signaling her to be quiet.
They both quietly watched their mom, and after she calmed down, returned to lean on the bedside again.
The visit only lasted ten minutes, but it made Ruby quite happy. Thinking back to the dreams she had when she was unconscious, she felt very grateful to have two such obedient babies. Without them, would she have felt so much reluctance, or cried herself awake from Hades’ Court?
Upon parting, Ruby instructed both of them to call their dad if anything happened, and to listen to Mama Bennett.
She initially thought Brandon would come today as well, and it was somewhat surprising that she didn’t see him. Considering Ethan hadn’t gone home recently, she decided not to ask him. Anyway, Mama Bennett would come to deliver lunch, and she could ask then.
In truth, she had many questions in her heart, but her current priority was to recover quickly, so she refrained from asking sensitive questions, for instance, about who the perpetrator of that night was.
Logically, in such a murder case, the police would definitely come to ask questions after it was reported, but she hadn’t seen any police officers, which was probably because Ethan had stopped them.
Still, her emotions were easily agitated at the moment, and hearing these issues might spike her heart rate to one hundred thirty, which was indeed not impossible; hence it was better not to meet.
Suffice it to say the ones who wanted her gone were a select one or two, likely not surprising to her.
When Mama Bennett came at noon, Ruby inquired about Brandon, and Mama Bennett mentioned that the old man was afraid to upset Ruby by making her sad, thus affecting her mood, so he dared not come. Ruby thought of her father’s strange temperament now; it indeed seemed possible it might become uncontrollable. She decided that it was fine not to meet, knowing he hadn’t been causing trouble at home brought her peace of mind.
Ten-plus days later, Ruby’s health had improved significantly, and the number of visitors to the hospital began to increase, with Sasha Shaw and Faye Truman being the first to come by.
