Chapter 199: Chapter 199: Breakfast

Ruby Sullivan walked into the hotel lobby, seeing Ethan Sterling sitting on the sofa, bored and looking at his phone, as if he still hadn’t woken up, watching it as he let out a big yawn.

Actually, Ethan didn’t need to come along with her so early, and Ruby hadn’t mentioned it to him at all. Her plan was to drive there herself, but he got up even earlier than she did. Watching from a distance, she suddenly felt a little guilty.

She walked over slowly, Ethan noticed her, and asked curiously, "Why did you come out?"

"There are so many people inside, none of whom I know, it’s boring, so I came out." Ruby sat down next to him, "I’m a bit hungry, is there any good breakfast nearby?"

Ethan checked the time, "The breakfast at this hotel is quite good, but it seems to start at eight o’clock. Nearby..." He pondered for a moment, "McDonald’s?"

Ruby laughed, "Are you serious?"

"Of course."

Ruby looked at their outfits, feeling a bit hesitant, "Doesn’t wearing this to McDonald’s seem a bit odd?"

"It’s early morning; no one will bother looking at you." Ethan said, grabbing her hand and pulling her up to walk outside.

So Ruby, in her fancy dress, and Ethan went to a nearby McDonald’s for breakfast. It was past seven o’clock; indeed, there weren’t many people, but it wasn’t empty either. She looked at the unfamiliar menu and decided to go for fried dough sticks with soy milk, which had the lowest error rate.

Ethan was also clueless about the menu; he couldn’t remember the last time he had been to McDonald’s, randomly choosing a combo, and after paying, took the receipt to get the meal.

Ruby went to find a seat.

The morning hygiene at McDonald’s was concerning, and there was even someone occupying a seat sleeping in the corner. She wandered around, finally took out a napkin to wipe the sofa, then sat down and began to meticulously clean the table.

Seeing Ethan coming over to sit across from her, she quickly stopped him, "Sit here, I’ve already wiped it."

"Alright." Ethan put down the tray and sat next to her.

The two had never sat so close while eating, even their arms could bump into each other, yet it didn’t feel uncomfortable.

Ruby opened the lid of the soy milk and drank a mouthful of warm soy milk, her body warmed up considerably, feeling pretty good. She glanced at his cheeseburger, "I guess it won’t be very tasty." She spoke with a somewhat schadenfreude smile.

Her keen nose picked up the strong smoky smell from the burger, definitely not something Ethan would like.

Ethan wasn’t bothered, "Haven’t eaten it yet, don’t jump to conclusions." He said, took a big bite of the burger, "Hmm, not bad."

"Impossible." Ruby drank another sip of soy milk, not believing him.

Ethan brought the burger to her mouth, "Try it."

Ruby was somewhat reluctant, but his sincere gaze made her furrow her brow as she reluctantly took a bite. The rich sauce and dry bread really weren’t tasty.

Ethan saw her frowning deeply, chuckled, "Okay, it’s really a bit bad." He put the burger down and started drinking soy milk. Sensing the sharp gaze beside him, he glanced sideways at her and couldn’t help but laugh, "Just look at you eating." He used a napkin to wipe the sauce from her mouth corner.

Ruby blinked, suddenly feeling a bit embarrassed, turned her head away, tore off half of a dough stick for him, "This, guaranteed to taste good."

Having finished eating with some time to spare and still early, Ethan suggested taking her for a walk in a nearby small park. It was early autumn, and the morning chill was heavy. Seeing Ruby hugging her arms, seemingly cold, Ethan took off his jacket and draped it over her.

Ruby paused, smiled and thanked him, took a few more steps, and still couldn’t resist asking, "Aren’t you being a bit too nice to me lately, your ex-wife?"

"Can’t I be nice to you?"

"Makes me a bit nervous."

"Don’t be so timid." Ethan replied casually, looking at the wilted flowers by the roadside, smiling, "I’ve always wanted to be nice to you."

Recently, his ability to speak sweetly seemed to have exploded, making Ruby feel very uncomfortable. She coughed twice and deliberately walked ahead, not wanting to chat about these somewhat awkward topics anymore.

They are already divorced, and nothing can change that fact.

They were walking on a pebble path; despite Ruby being mindful of her steps, her high heels struggled on such a path. A layer of frost coated the pebbles, and with a slight mistake, the heel slipped.

Ethan immediately stepped forward, catching her in his arms, "Careful."

He was grateful he had been watching her, otherwise he wouldn’t have reacted so quickly.

"Thanks." Ruby breathed a sigh of relief, startled by the unexpected incident. Once she steadied herself, she noticed her phone vibrating, quickly took it out from her purse, it was Naomi Sinclair.

"Where are you? I’ve called three times." Naomi seemed a bit angry.

"I went out with Ethan Sterling for breakfast, what’s up?"

"Oh, Mr. Sterling is there too?" Naomi was surprised, "Nothing much, just wanted to tell you that the groom is on his way, do you want to come back to help block the door?"

"Forget it, with you guys there, the groom will have a hard time anyways."

"Alright then." Naomi paused for a moment and said: "Are you still upset? Azure Hollis was just joking around."

Ruby frowned, "I didn’t find it funny."

She suddenly remembered her childhood, when she was called "Fat Girl" because she was chubby. Although she thought people were joking, even if she didn’t like hearing it much, she never got angry over it. But when many people gathered to joke about a pig climbing a tree, she truly couldn’t laugh along with them.

She hung up the phone, her expression already looking a bit unpleasant.

Ethan, hearing bits and pieces beside her, finally figured out why she had suddenly walked out this morning, "What happened?"

Ruby shook her head, clinging to his arm as they continued walking, "Do you know Azure Hollis?"

"The name I’ve heard, but I can’t match the face with the name." Ethan answered honestly, guessing that Ruby’s unhappiness might be related to this person.

"I should have offended this person." Ruby thought it best to give him a heads-up.

Though there’s no permanent enemy, only permanent interests, when indulging in a battle of words, it’s uncertain whether it might affect future benefits. She felt that since Azure Hollis dared to openly mock her, either he believed Ethan didn’t care about her, or his family was powerful enough not to be intimidated by the Sterling Group.

Ethan laughed, "What did she do to provoke you?"

"Nothing much, just a loose tongue." Ruby muttered.

Feeling that walking was too uncomfortable, Ethan suddenly took a step forward, scooped her up horizontally, startling Ruby into a scream, her face instantly turning red, "What are you doing?"

"I’m carrying you, so you won’t fully focus on being upset, think about how to get back at her later." He laughed.
