Chubby Mommy: Scheming Daddy, Surrender Now!-Chapter 161: Thank You for Lying to Me
At night, after Ethan Sterling got into bed, he tentatively stretched out his arm. Ruby Sullivan hesitated for a moment, but then slightly raised her head, allowing him to slip his arm through the gap under the pillow. In this position, Ethan could easily pull her into his embrace.
Ruby had a cold body and was always chilly. Ethan initially hugged her like this while sleeping just because she casually mentioned that his body was warm and it was very comfortable to sleep next to him.
Thinking about these things, Ethan felt a pang of pain in his heart, hoping that these matters, this woman, would never find out.
"Tomorrow morning, I will take Rhonda Sullivan for a check-up. The results should be out in about three days," he said slowly.
"Hmm," Ruby responded.
Even if the match is unsuccessful, they will probably still get married, right? She didn’t dare to think further, afraid that she couldn’t remain calm.
As if Ethan could hear her thoughts, he said calmly, "I won’t marry her, Mrs. Sterling, there is only you." After saying this, he gently curled his arm around her, loosely holding her, and dropped a soft kiss on her back.
Ruby’s whole body stiffened for a moment, her heart clenched like it was being squeezed tightly, all her hidden emotions pushed to her throat, surging, about to spill out.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down, and lightly laughed, "It’s better to believe there are ghosts in this world than to believe a man’s words, but still, thank you for lying to me." Perhaps before, she couldn’t believe it, but now seeing Ethan’s way with Honey and Seth, she knew he could be a good father, so even if it was for the children’s sake, he definitely would marry Rhonda Sullivan.
Thinking about this made Ruby even more bitter, yet she no longer felt any reluctance.
They were just two people destined to meet but not be together; letting go of the obsession was a relief for both herself and him.
Perhaps it was because the bed at home was more comfortable, but Ruby slept especially soundly. When she opened her eyes the next day, only Honey and Seth were by her side, watching over her. Ethan had already left.
"Mom, you’re finally awake." Seeing her open her eyes, Honey smiled happily. She didn’t know what illness her mother had, but she had never seen her mother this weak before. Also, her mother slept for so long, making her constantly worried that her mom would become a sleeping beauty.
She came to the bedside after breakfast because she was still worried.
Seth knew that their mom just needed rest, but he understood his sister’s feelings, so he stayed in the room with her.
Ruby smiled, "Yes, I’m awake."
Seth also smiled, "I’ll go tell Mama Bennett to prepare breakfast for you. She said it’s been kept warm in the steamer, and you can eat it as soon as you wake up."
Ruby collected herself a bit, got out of bed, and walked around for a while, feeling much lighter than she did yesterday. Just as she was about to wash up, Mama Bennett came upstairs to ask if she wanted to eat downstairs or in her room.
"I’ll eat downstairs, I feel much more energized today."
Hearing her say this, Mama Bennett’s expression also relaxed a lot, "Then I’ll have it ready for you in the dining room."
At that moment, Leon Sterling appeared at the door after hearing the movement, "I’ll escort you downstairs."
"Escort?" Ruby felt a bit embarrassed, "I’m not an old lady, I can manage to go downstairs on my own."
Leon didn’t care about what she said. When she finished washing up and was ready to go downstairs, he stayed close by, afraid she might have an accident.
Ruby knew it wouldn’t help to say anything, so she let him be.
Her breakfast was different from the others’; Mama Bennett prepared it like a postpartum meal but knew she liked it light, so she chose many vegetables to replenish blood and energy to stew soup and make dishes.
Although Ruby’s body was very weak, she mostly slept and ate these nourishing meals lately, feeling like her waist was becoming thicker than before she stayed in the hospital. However, thinking that such treatment would soon end, she did not refuse Mama Bennett’s stewed soup.
"Isn’t Vivian here?" After drinking the soup, she suddenly felt the house was a bit quiet.
When Vivian was around, she loved to bring the two kids out to make noise in the living room; she was probably the most unlike-a-grandmother grandmother in the world.
"Uncle said he wanted to buy some paintings and invited her to the auction to be the advisor."
Ruby nodded, pondering, even if Uncle and Vivian wouldn’t step into marriage yet, Ethan would likely use this relationship to link up with The Sinclair Family, making it harder for The Lawson Group to get at The Sterling Group.
Thinking this way, although it betrayed her master, she still wanted The Sterling Group and him to be well, especially when... she recalled what Dr. L had told her before, if indeed the master was going to make things difficult for Ethan for her sake, she’d feel a bit guilty and didn’t want to involve him.

At Mercy Hospital, Rhonda Sullivan’s routine check-up showed that the fetus was in excellent condition. It was Ethan Sterling’s first time accompanying her to a prenatal check-up, and she was overjoyed. Ethan had already told her about the impending divorce, so she felt reassured and no longer wanted to bother Ruby at the Sterling house.
"Doctor, can you tell if it’s a boy or a girl now?" Staring at the curled-up fetus on the screen, she excitedly grabbed Ethan’s hand.
The doctor smiled, "It’s a little cotton padded jacket."
"A girl?" Rhonda’s face immediately fell upon hearing this, "Doctor, please look again, could you have mistaken it?"
The doctor knew some parents had a bias for having sons over daughters. Especially wealthy women giving birth here at Mercy Hospital, since the child’s gender could affect inheritance and interests. More people wanted sons.
Not wanting to upset the expecting mother, the doctor continued, "The fetus is still small at this stage, and it’s indeed possible to make an error."
Rhonda let out a long breath, tilted her head to look at Ethan, and said self-deceptively, "Ethan, I feel that it’s a son; a daughter wouldn’t be this mischievous."
Ethan glanced at her, gave a stiff smile, and said, "It’s okay, I like both boys and girls."
Rhonda’s eyes widened with emotion and she smiled blissfully, "Ethan, you’re so great."
After the examination, the doctor gave them some routine instructions and potential situations to be aware of, then let them leave the room.
Rhonda linked her arm through Ethan’s as they left the consultation room, startled by the two nurses standing at the door.
"Ms. Sullivan, you have another test to undergo. Please come with us," one of the nurses, wearing a mask, stepped forward, grasping her arm somewhat assertively and pulling her away from Ethan. At the same time, another nurse immediately stepped up to take her other arm.
"Mr. Sterling, please wait here for a moment," the nurse instructed.
Rhonda felt a little scared, "Don’t all the prenatal check-ups happen here? Where are you taking me?"
Ethan also frowned, stepping forward to follow beside them, "I’ll accompany you, don’t be afraid."
Only when Ethan said this did Rhonda feel reassured.
A few minutes later, the nurses took Rhonda to an operating room on another floor, and Ethan was stopped outside. Although slightly unwilling, she believed no one dared to do anything to her child at Mercy Hospital, especially with Ethan right outside, so she didn’t think much of it.
Outside the operating room, Zoe Lawson exchanged a look with Ethan Sterling through her mask and then walked into the operating room.
This scene was all part of the plan set up by Ethan and Zoe in advance. Ethan played unaware so that he could better sooth Rhonda afterward.
