Chapter 159: Chapter 159: It’s So Hard to Stay Alive

Leon Sterling saw she was about to make a call and went out, telling her he was just outside and to call him if she needed anything.

Ruby Sullivan nodded and said thank you, her mind already drifting to the phone call she was about to make.

She hadn’t been in touch with Sasha Shaw for a long time and was wondering if she had been busy lately. She thought that if the call didn’t go through, she would call Faye Truman instead. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

The call went through, and just as she was about to give up amidst a series of beeps, the other person answered, sounding like she had just woken up, "Darling."

Hearing her voice made Ruby Sullivan suddenly feel a wave of grievance. She held it in for a long time, but eventually couldn’t control her choked voice, "Sasha, I’m in the hospital, at Mercy. Can you come and see me?"

"Wait there, I’ll be right over." Without another word, Sasha hung up the phone.

Ruby Sullivan sniffled and looking at the now-black phone screen, couldn’t help but smile, feeling like she wasn’t so down-and-out after all.

Leon Sterling saw through the glass in the door that she quickly put down her phone and was staring blankly at the screen. He thought the call hadn’t gone through, and couldn’t help but walk in, "Finished the call?"

Ruby Sullivan nodded, "I miss my best friend a bit, so I asked her to come see me." After she said this, she felt a bit willful, realizing she might be interrupting Sasha’s work, and smiled somewhat embarrassedly. But thinking of Sasha’s straightforwardness on the phone, her heart felt warm.

"I heard from Emma that you have two really close friends, and they’re both interesting people." Hearing her say this put Leon Sterling at ease.

Ruby Sullivan nodded, "Did Emma say that? We’ve had a meal together, and I was worried my buddy might have upset her." But then she remembered that Faye Truman had helped treat Emma’s face, and Faye hadn’t complained, so perhaps they had talked enough to see each other’s strengths.

"By the way, she’s recently taken on a fantasy film. She heard I was back and was clamoring for me to bring her some of your cooked meals while visiting the set." Leon Sterling had forgotten about this call from his sister when he was with Vivian and Uncle watching an exhibition.

Ruby Sullivan chuckled, "If she can wait a month, I’ll be able to cook."

Leon Sterling nodded, "No problem, we can wait until she finishes filming. I can be your helper."

Ruby Sullivan’s vitality was still low, so it wasn’t good for her to talk too much. Leon Sterling, seeing she looked much better than yesterday, stopped chatting with her, turned on the TV, and kept her company watching a variety show. As the two chuckled at the TV, Sasha Shaw came in.

Seeing the man next to Ruby Sullivan, she froze, "What’s going on?"

Leon Sterling was also surprised, "You’re Ruby’s best friend?"

Ruby Sullivan was also shocked, "You two... know each other?"

Sasha Shaw nodded, still puzzled, "Yes, do you... know each other too?" She was unaware that Ruby had such a handsome male friend, not just a great artist but familiar enough to visit her in the hospital.

Leon Sterling explained, "I’m Ethan Sterling’s younger brother."

Sasha Shaw was taken aback, exclaiming, "Oh, my God! How small is the world?"

Leon Sterling smiled, "Alright, you two chat, I’ll go for a walk."

Sasha Shaw watched him walk past, still finding it hard to believe.

"How did you two meet?" Ruby Sullivan was curious.

Sasha Shaw sat down beside her, "It’s a long story. Let’s talk about you first. What happened, how did you end up in the hospital again?" She pinched her bony little face, frowning, "Have you lost weight again?"

Today, Ruby Sullivan was looking much better than yesterday, although still a bit pale, but when Sasha arrived, she happened to see Ruby laughing, so she didn’t think she was seriously ill.

After hearing the entire story, Sasha’s face turned dark.

"I’ll go to The Sterling Group right now and give Ethan Sterling a beating first."

"There’s no need, Leon Sterling already dealt with him." Ruby Sullivan hurriedly stopped her.

"Oh." Sasha Shaw looked at him in a new light, "Well done. But if you go to Meridia, what about Honey?"

Ruby Sullivan sighed, leaning on Sasha Shaw’s shoulder, unusually showing a fragile side. Thinking of Honey always made her sad, but she knew better than anyone that no amount of tears or sighs could change Honey’s fate.

"Let’s leave it to fate. If Rhonda Sullivan’s child can save Honey, then divorcing Ethan Sterling is worthwhile."

"And if not?" Sasha didn’t want to sound negative, but she genuinely felt sorry for Ruby Sullivan.

"Then not," Ruby Sullivan said, her voice getting weaker, eventually becoming choked. She bit her trembling lower lip, rubbed Sasha Shaw’s shoulder, and silently shed many tears, wetting Sasha’s shirt.

Sasha Shaw sighed, held her hand, allowing herself to become a human pillow.

The next day, having heard the news, Faye Truman also appeared at the hospital, much like Sasha, not caring about the reasons and wanting to punch Ethan Sterling right away.

In the days that followed, these two family allies came to the hospital whenever they had time to visit Ruby Sullivan, which significantly improved her spirits.

On the day of the D&C procedure, Ruby Sullivan was a bit scared, so Sasha Shaw put on sterile clothes and accompanied her into the operating room, staying by her side the whole time.

Upon discharge, Sasha Shaw originally wanted Ruby Sullivan to stay with her but thought that since Ruby needed care, The Sterling Family had many servants, so she didn’t insist too much. However, she couldn’t help but repeatedly remind Ruby to call her immediately if anything happened.

She felt that her best friend had suffered greatly and that their lack of contact recently was partly responsible.

If she had known earlier that Ethan Sterling dared to act like that in front of Ruby Sullivan with Rhonda Sullivan, no matter his reasons, she would have gone and exposed that bastard.

At noon, Vivian wanted to keep Sasha Shaw and Faye Truman for lunch at home as an apology from the husband’s family, even specifically sending Ethan Sterling to the company to avoid awkwardness, but the two refused.

Sasha originally wanted to say some nasty things to disgust The Sterling Family people, but then she thought about how Ruby’s mother-in-law was great, Ethan Sterling’s brother was her friend, and his sister was her idol, which was quite a difficult situation.

In the end, she could only express her concerns and ask Vivian to take good care of Ruby as a favor.

"Rest assured, Ruby’s mother and I were close friends when we were younger. She won’t have any more problems under my watch." Vivian’s words might have seemed formal, but she meant them sincerely.

Sasha Shaw sighed, "Then I’ll leave." Then she and Faye Truman waved goodbye to Honey and Seth, who came to see them off at the door, before leaving.

Inside, Ruby Sullivan lay on that familiar yet strange bed, looking at the familiar yet unfamiliar bedroom, saying a silent goodbye in her heart.

Ethan Sterling had been sitting in the garden, and when he heard they had left, he returned to his room to see Ruby Sullivan. He happened upon her hugging a pillow, crying.

His eyes were filled with heartache, and after hesitating for a moment, he turned and leaned against the wall, not going in. Only by leaving her could she find happiness again.
