Chapter 143: Chapter 143: Pretending Nothing Happened

This slap was quite loud, as if there was an echo across the empty lake surface.

Rhonda Sullivan was hit to the point of hearing ringing in her ears, her mind went blank. When she came to her senses, she took a glance at Sasha Shaw and didn’t dare to talk back. Like a submissive little wife, she hid behind Ethan Sterling, tugging at his shirt.

Vivian snorted coldly, "Ethan, do you have anything you want to say to me, your mother?"

"I’ll talk to you when we get home."

"I see you’re with this woman because you don’t want to go home anymore." Vivian hadn’t planned to save face for these two when she came over.

She always thought Ethan married Wenny suddenly because he liked her, but she didn’t expect he would still be so ambiguously involved with Rhonda Sullivan. Thinking of her daughter-in-law’s expression earlier, it was clear she already knew he was at the hospital.

At this thought, her face turned even uglier.

When she was young, she had had enough of a man’s cold treatment, and she couldn’t accept that her son would also be a jerk who breaks women’s hearts!

"Now, come home with me immediately." She ordered unceremoniously.

Rhonda Sullivan thought Ethan didn’t hold much regard for his mother, but seeing the situation now, she didn’t want to embarrass him further. After all, she’s his mom. "Ethan, you go home with Auntie. I’m fine."

"Then take care of yourself." Ethan instructed briefly and walked forward.

Vivian glanced at Rhonda’s belly and announced, "I still say this, as long as I’m alive, don’t even think about stepping into the Sterling Family’s door."

Rhonda bit her lips sadly, not daring to speak, but her heart was set on her plan.

Ethan was raised by his grandmother. If the elder Mrs. Sterling had said this to her, she might have been afraid. But since it was Vivian, she didn’t take it seriously at all.

The baby in her belly was Ethan Sterling’s flesh and blood. She was sure she’d rise in status because of the child.

After mother and son got into the car, Vivian pressed her hand on the wheel, "Explain things before we go home: what exactly is going on with you and her?"

Ethan let out a long sigh, "I have my plans, don’t interfere."

"If I don’t interfere, who will? Let Ruby take Honey to find the police? I think you’re just too muddleheaded; you deserve a slap today too." Vivian said, frustrated with his behavior.

Ethan furrowed his brow, moved his lips, and finally chose silence, "I’ll make things clear to Ruby, my affairs are mine to deal with." Saying this, he removed her hand and started the engine.

Vivian looked at his stubborn face and thought about many things from her youth, turning cold-hearted as she looked out the window.

Her feelings with Mr. Sterling only formed after Ethan was born and diagnosed. If a child is the crystallization of parental love, then Leon Sterling should be that crystal. Ethan was just a child they had because they couldn’t bear the elder Mrs. Sterling’s pressure.

Even so, she poured all her love into him during her ten months of pregnancy. After knowing his illness, she spoiled him even more, each time he cried in the examination room, she cried even more painfully outside the door.

Now, this grown son tells her his matters are not hers to concern.

She didn’t want to interfere, but now he’s cheating!

The drive was silent, and when they arrived at the gate, Ethan didn’t drive in. After a long breath, he said wearily, "I want to use the child in Rhonda Sullivan’s belly to save Honey."

Vivian was stunned and took a long while to respond, "The doctor said Honey’s condition is special; even a child from you two may not be a match, let alone someone else’s child."

"We must try no matter what. Don’t tell Ruby, and Rhonda Sullivan doesn’t know anything either. I’ll... I’ll be the bad guy for this." For his daughter, he had to do so.

"Is this why you let Rhonda keep the child?"

Ethan nodded.

Vivian let out a long sigh, suddenly feeling heartache for both her son and daughter-in-law. After suppressing her emotions for a while, she swallowed them back, "I’ll go inside first."

Ruby Sullivan was preparing dinner, thinking to practice what she’ll make for Naomi Sinclair the next day. The two little ones were helping in the kitchen, full of joy.

She heard the sound outside and came out to greet Vivian, surprised to see her and Ethan entering one after the other, "I’m preparing dinner; it might take a bit longer."

"No rush." Vivian replied with a smile, obviously low in spirits, and then went back to her room.

Ethan took off his jacket, hung it up, and rolled up his sleeves as he approached her, "Do you need help?"

"No need." Ruby gave him a deep look, temporarily suppressing all her questions, "By the way, Don said he’s with friends today and will be back tomorrow. I’ve already made an appointment with Naomi Sinclair. How about asking Vivian to bring Uncle Three as well?" 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Up to her." Ethan seemed indifferent.

"Alright, then I’ll ask her during dinner." Ruby said as she returned to the kitchen, acting as if she hadn’t seen anything tonight.

At Sasha Shaw’s house, Leon Sterling sat next to her on the two-seater couch in the living room, watching a classic black-and-white movie, Roman Holiday.

Sasha Shaw didn’t know how many times she’d seen it already, but watching the princess return to her old life and wave goodbye to the journalist played by Parker, she began wiping her tears with tissues.

Though Leon also liked the movie, not to her extent, after handing her the tissues, he couldn’t help but say, "I didn’t realize you were so sentimental."

Sasha wiped her tears and then her nose, "At times like these, don’t men usually say, ’Do you need my shoulder?’

Leon chuckled, "That’s... a very cliché script, I suppose."

Sasha thought for a moment and nodded, "Alright, I don’t need a shoulder anyway." She cries every time, only because she always thinks of Hepburn’s tumultuous love life; she thought she found love, but in others’ eyes, she was just used by jerks.

In relationships, she was too humble; love that humble down to dust couldn’t be love. It was the oppressed and oppressor dynamic of the past.

"Alright, so tell me, why did you suddenly come to find me?" Sasha was so surprised when she got his call that she was speechless for a moment. She didn’t remember exchanging phone numbers with him.

But since he admitted using some small tricks, she didn’t ask much. Just looking for someone to watch a movie with her, she invited him over.

Even if it was just intuition, Sasha believed he wasn’t a bad person.

"You’re my only friend in the country." Leon was straightforward.

He left the hospital in anger, initially wanting to see Ruby Sullivan, but in the end, he resisted. He didn’t know what to say to Ruby. She had been hurt like this before, and even if she should know the truth, she likely wouldn’t want to hear it from a third party.

So he hesitated outside The Sterling Group’s building for half an hour and suddenly remembered he still had a friend in this country.

He took a sip of water, "If you found out a friend’s husband was cheating, would you tell her?"

"If it was confirmed, of course, I’d tell her. Why let her hold onto false hope? Why make yourself suffer?"

Leon leaned back on the couch, thought for a while, and nodded, "I think so too."

"So... who’s cheating?" Sasha posed as if she were a curious bystander, her eyes lighting up as she looked at him.
