Chef at the University Canteen-Chapter 460 - 269: Can’t Afford the Meal, Offers Himself Instead
Another classmate, He Tao, also moved out of the dormitory after Wang Xueyi left to prepare for civil service exams.
Both of them are highly ambitious, full of hopes for the future. Their similar personalities naturally brought Wang Xueyi and He Tao closer together.
As for Hu Zhihai and Jiang Yu in the dormitory...
To be honest, they didn’t think much of them.
Although Hu Zhihai’s family is rich, he is cynical and nonchalant, always skipping classes and playing games. With such a disposition, what can wealth bring him in terms of success?
And Jiang Yu, it’s said that his family only has a grandmother left, and they’re in huge debt. He has to work to earn his tuition and living expenses. Finding a job after graduation is still a question.
Though Wang Xueyi and He Tao looked down on the two, their outward relationship remained cordial. After all, there were no real conflicts between them, so they could still communicate and interact normally.
But they were certain that once they graduated and went their separate ways, there wouldn’t be any ties between them.
After all, people of different paths don’t plan together!
As they were eating, He Tao suddenly looked up and said to Wang Xueyi,
"Hey, Lao Wang, I forgot to ask you, you haven’t found a job yet, right? So what’s your plan?"
"I haven’t looked. In our field, it’s hard to find a good job with just a bachelor’s degree. I’d rather not work than do administrative tasks in a business unit."
Wang Xueyi shook his head, took a bite of rice, and said slowly,
"I still want to try for Jing University for another year. Failing the retest this time was really frustrating!"
"Retaking for another year isn’t a big deal, but it’s just a waste of a year."
He Tao also shook his head, sighed, and said,
"I just find it strange. When you failed the Jing University retest, you should have been able to transfer to another school, right? Why didn’t you try that?"
"Schools with open slots for transfer aren’t great ones. I’m unwilling to settle for less. If I pursue graduate studies, it would be at the best school, or not at all."
Wang Xueyi glanced at him, pouted, and said,
"Okay, enough about me! I heard your family already arranged for you to work as a reporter at the local TV station?"
"Ah, a county-level TV station, what’s interesting about that?"
He Tao sighed, threw down his chopsticks, and ignored the half-eaten fried rice, which was as unappetizing as always at the Second Dining Hall.
He looked up at Wang Xueyi, smiled, and said,
"I have no other choice. After studying for over half a year, I couldn’t even pass the written civil service exam; I was quite far off.
So my family used their connections to get me a contract job at the county TV station. As for the future, I’ll take it slow."
Wang Xueyi frowned: "Have you just given up like that?"
"Given up? Given up on what?"
He Tao leaned back and said with a smile,
"Even if I’m working, I can still continue to prepare for the civil service exams. Of course, whether I can keep up with the studying depends on my self-discipline."
As he spoke, He Tao suddenly shifted the topic, looking mysterious, and said,
"Hey, Lao Wang, have you heard? It’s said that Jiang Yu has also been accepted for graduate studies!"
"Jiang Yu also got into graduate studies?"
Wang Xueyi’s chopsticks paused, and his brow furrowed deeply,
"Where did you hear that? How come I didn’t know at all? By the way, which school did he get into?"
"He got into his own alma mater."
He Tao breathed a light sigh, thought for a moment, and added,
"This matter of his graduate acceptance happened in November or December last year. Initially, his name wasn’t on the recommended list. It was only after the school leaders intervened that he got through.
I heard this from the class monitor."
Wang Xueyi swallowed hard, his face extremely conflicted, seemingly in disbelief, as he said with a sullen expression:
"I had better grades than him and couldn’t secure a graduate spot. After studying hard for over half a year, I still didn’t pass!
And he, who often skipped classes to work odd jobs just for a few bucks, managed to get into graduate studies?
Why?!"
"Heh, why? Isn’t it because his Seventh Dining Hall is doing well, known all over the internet?"
He Tao wasn’t as annoyed, as he never intended to pursue graduate studies from the start. He took a big sip of his cold drink and said with a smacking sound, smiling,
"Hey, what do you call this? It’s called different fates for different folks, even under the same umbrella!"
After a pause, he suddenly remembered something and asked puzzledly,
"Hey, by the way, Lao Wang, have you ever tried the food at Jiang Yu’s canteen?
Why is everyone saying his food is really good? We’ve been dorm mates for four years and never heard about it before!"
"No, I haven’t!"
Wang Xueyi glanced at He Tao, shook his head, and replied,
"I’ve been busy prepping for exams for the better part of last year. I only returned to campus for research checks. On regular days, I’d either eat at the restaurant downstairs in my complex or have something delivered. Who has the time to go all the way to the canteen for a meal?
So, have you tried it?"
"I hardly believe that guy can cook anything decent, his cooking skills are probably learned from washing dishes at a restaurant."
He Tao pouted with disdain,
"No idea what kind of Enchanted Soup he fed those students, making them line up every day at Seventh Dining Hall. It’s crazy!"
