Chapter 78: I’m a very materialistic person

Max was already waiting in the park and as soon as he saw Valerie, he raised his hand, signaling her to come over.

She breathed out, calming her nerves, and approached.

Seeing Max standing tall in front of her with no expression on his face reminded her of his pained expression. She bit her lip and stretched out the bag.

"This is yours." She said.

Max looked at the bag and slowly accepted it. He looked inside and saw it was his jacket as well as the scarf he gave her.

His gaze fell and his eyebrows furrowed.

"So, that’s your answer." He said and raised his head to look at her with his disappointed expression. "Valerie, do you really detest me?"

"No." She said. "The word detest isn’t it at all."

Max flinched. What did that mean? Was there anything worse than detest? He clenched his teeth. What did he do wrong?

"Will you at least explain it to me?" He asked. "Tell me, why did you say those things to those people?"

"It’s... It’s complicated." She said. "I’d like to explain why but I don’t know how to."

"Is it because you’re Ross Heiress?" He suddenly asked and she flinched.

"How did you...?"

"I saw your eyes." He said and stepped closer. "They were so beautiful, like rubies. So clear and bold." He swiped her hair back. "They were magical." His words were coupled with the loving look in his eyes. "I know you have your reasons for hiding your identity and I honestly don’t care about it but why do you have to hurt my feelings? What is going on that you have to use harsh words?"

"It’s... complicated." She said once more and he frowned.

"More complicated than my feelings?" He asked and she snapped.

"Yes. It’s very complicated and for that, I’d rather you don’t come close to me anymore. Stay away from me and forget about our relationship." Her words dropped a bomb on his chest and he staggered back.

What he feared, she was saying it. She wanted to end their relationship.

"Valerie, you can’t be serious, right?" He asked, his fists slowly trembling.

"I mean it, Max. Stay away from me from now on. I won’t hesitate to tell you off and brand you as a pervert if you try to come close to me." She warned and turned to leave but he suddenly grabbed her hand and pulled her into his arms.

"No." He said. "You can’t do this. Valerie, I love you. I love you, okay? I love you more than I imagined. Hearing you say those words made me realize it. Please, don’t break up with me."

Valerie stayed in place, hearing his confession, and while he was speaking his heart out, the thought that occupied her mind was, ’his arms are warm’.

"Valerie, I know I can be clingy and annoying, but I can change." He said. "We’ve only been dating for a few weeks and you didn’t tell me that you were dissatisfied with anything that’s why I kept on with my antics. Please, don’t push me away."

His words landed hard on her heart. He was sincere, so sincere that her heart broke.

"Max," she called in a mutter. "I can’t protect you." She simply said and pushed him away, getting out of his arms. "Even if I wanted to continue with this relationship, there’s no telling that you’d be satisfied because I will definitely not treat you like a normal human would."

She hoped that would tell him off but he was adamant.

"I don’t care." He said. "I want to be with you and that’s all that matters. Feelings grow, Valerie."

Valerie pursed her lips. Yes, feelings grow, and that was why she was feeling like this. The feelings she had for him were far stronger than she realized.

"Listen to yourself." Valerie suddenly said and cackled. "Feelings or whatnot, I can’t get together with a commoner."

"What?"

"As you know, I am the heiress of Ross Corp. Do you think I’d aim to marry a common man? I need to be partnered with someone up the ladder as well. Someone from Stewart, for example." She said and he flinched.

"You... So, if I were a member of Stewart, you’d agree to marry them?"

"Not just any member of Stewart. It has to be the one who will inherit the position of Chairman. That’s the kind of guy I want."

Words hung in his throat as he patted his lips to ask a simple question.

"And...why is that?"

"It’s because I’m a very materialistic person." She said but at the mention of that, Max’s head rang the words, ’lies’. Why was she lying?

He knew a materialistic person once he saw one and Valerie was definitely not one. She could’ve bought him by saying she was ambitious but even that was impossible to believe.

Would an ambitious or materialistic person downgrade herself and go to a third-rate high school when she was capable of entering the most famous school in the country and even the world?

If she aimed for materials and higher positions, she would’ve been there not here.

In any case, he could confirm that it was a lie. So what was the reason why she was making up all sorts of lies to get away from him?

If she knew he was from Stewart, would she still try to run away from him?

"Max, let’s end things here." She said. They were dragging this thing too much. She didn’t even know if Lucy and Lucas tailed her once more. It would be bad if they did. "You’re useless to me so don’t come near me from now on."

She turned around but paused as he muttered the words,

"Useless." He scoffed and lowered his head, staring at the bag in his hand. "If you knew who I was, would you still say that?" He raised his head, showing an angry expression but she could not see as she had her back against him. "It’s just to be at the top, right? If I were at the top, would you look at me? Would you... Be with me?"

"Don’t talk about the impossible." She said and wanted to leave but once again, he caught her hand.

"Valerie, please think this over. I really love you."

’Please, don’t make things harder for me than it already is.’ she thought, pressing her eyes shut. "Max, let go. If you don’t, I’ll make you regret it."

"And how do you plan to do that?" He asked. "I’ll regret it either way so why should I?" He hugged her from behind. "Valerie, please don’t do this."

She felt his tears on her shoulder and she flinched. He was crying? Because of her? Was that how hurt he was?

She gritted her teeth. She had to stop this if not she wouldn’t be able to stick to her decision.

"Get a grip, we’re just high school kids. Love? Give me a break." She pushed him away and glared. "Stay away from me, Max, in warning you." She declared but he still tried to hold her so she slapped his hand away. "You’re the one who crossed the line. Don’t blame me if you get hurt after this, because right now, you make me sick."

With those words, she walked away.

A weakness. Max was her weakness. If she clung on to him any further, they would use him against her. They would tear him apart. They were vermins.

’This is for your own good, Max. I don’t want to hold on to you because I don’t have the power to protect you right now. Maybe in the future, maybe then, if we meet again, I’ll definitely accept you.’
