Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 76: Who are they?
Valerie and Max spent a fair amount of time at the movie theater. They watched a movie, and while her mind was on the film, intrigued by what she was doing for the first time, Max kept his eyes on her.
She felt his gaze most of the time and even caught his eyes from time to time but she tried not to show her excitement and kept her eye on the movie.
After the film was over, he took her to a claw machine but unfortunately, neither of them was able to get a plushie from the machine. She saw it as pointless anyway and ended up buying him a key chain out of the blue.
"This is way better than those stuffed creatures." She said, handing it to him with a straight face. "You won’t need to stress over it."
"You got that... For me?" He asked in disbelief. He was seeing it stretched towards him but he didn’t expect it so he could not believe it right away.
"I guess you don’t like it." Valerie said and slowly lowered her hand but he caught it and said,
"No, I like it." He said. "I like it a lot. Thank you."
She pursed her lips and turned her head away. He looked happy to receive a simple key chain from her. Was that alright?
"Come." Max held her hand and led her away once more.
"Where are we going?"
"It’s no fun to only watch a movie. Let’s walk around." He said and once he looked forward, she smiled. He was a real handful but she did not resent it.
Max took her to a park and sat her down,
"I’ll go get ice cream." He said and walked away.
Valerie watched him as he left and then touched the scarf around her neck. He was the one who told her to keep warm yet he was going to get her ice cream. Weren’t those contrasting with each other?
"I guess it’s not so cold, given what I wore." She thought and looked down, only to notice his jacket that was still on her waist. She smiled. The little things he did made her smile and she did not even know why.
"Who’d know getting a boyfriend would finally make a stoic bitch smile?" Valerie’s eyes widened and she raised her head to see Lucas and Lucy standing in front of her with shades on like they were celebrities.
"How did you...?"
"You’re such a rotten bitch." Lucy accused. "You’re already going around looking for handsome boys to date. So pretentious."
Valerie stayed silent, clenching her fists. How did they know she was there? This was not good. If they met Max...
"Let’s talk somewhere else." She said, got up, and led them away from there.
Lucy eyed Max who was still getting ice cream and when he turned with the ice cream in his hand, he saw Valerie walking away with those two trailing her from behind.
"Who are they?" He wondered and decided to follow in case Valerie was in trouble.
Valerie took them to a corner and asked,
"Why did you follow me?" Lucy snickered.
"Who said we followed you? My brother and I simply came for a walk and saw you smiling like a fool at some boy." She folded her arms. "You act like you’re so good but you’re no different from all those cheap girls who try to climb the ladder with their body."
Valerie was indifferent, staring coldly at both of them.
"You seem to be misunderstanding something." She said and took off her glasses. "Look at me closely, do I look like someone who’s trying to use a boy to climb the ladder? I’m already at the top of the ladder, idiots."
They flinched. Valerie’s dangerous gaze was scary. Even their parents couldn’t contend with it so who were they?
But they didn’t want to be pushed back like this and said,
"Ahem, anyway," Lucy cleared her throat and her lisp curled up in an evil smirk. "You might be on top of the ladder but he’s not. Don’t worry, I’ll help you get rid of the pest that’s trying to bring you down to his level."
Valerie’s hand slightly twitched. These demons, they were going to do something bad.
"Mind your own business." She said. "Do you really think I’d be bothered by just some boy? He’s as useful as they come and that’s why I keep him by my side. It’s my decision, if to dispose of him or not." She shook her head. "In fact, I think I’m bored already. I’ll just give him a little scare so he’ll never come close to me. He’s as pesty as it is."
Both ice creams fell from Max’s hand as he stared in shock at what he just heard. Valerie saw the shock on his face and her heart shook. No, he wasn’t supposed to hear that.
Why was he here?
In any case, she kept her indifferent expression like she wasn’t bothered that he heard that.
"Oh look, the lover boy was there the whole time. He really is a pest, as you said." Lucas said glancing over his shoulder with a big smirk, and Valerie cussed in her mind.
She never wanted it to be like this. She never wanted to hurt his feelings but... his feelings getting hurt was better than his life being in danger. This was fine. She hoped.
"Is... Is that true?" Max asked, his hand slightly trembling. "I thought... I thought we were getting closer. I thought you at least held a little bit of feelings for me. Valerie."
His words broke her more but not here, not now. She couldn’t tell him the truth there.
"Did I ever say those words to you?" Valerie asked in a harsh tone, ripping his heart to pieces. "I went along with your whims since you saved me. Don’t get delusional."
She started leaving.
"I’m going home."
She walked past him, her shoulder slightly brushed past his. His expression was ... She looked away.
Max ran the other way, his head down as his thoughts raced and his heart trembled. He was hurt beyond comprehension. He didn’t even know he would get so hurt so it was painful.
"Wow, would you look at that? She’s a bigger bitch than we thought." Lucy commented and took off her shades., but she wasn’t satisfied. Even if Valerie said that she might have been just lying and that indifference was a cover to her them off her lover boy’s tracks.
If he was indeed someone she cared about, they would succeed in hurting her and if he wasn’t, she wouldn’t care and he was a total nobody so it was a win-win. What was important was then succeeding in breaking what was hers.
