Chapter 68: How long does it take to conceive as newly Weds?

Valerie was speechless. How did he get this?

This wrapper that once contained the sweet he gave her. How...?

That was when she remembered that her secret compartment also had her heart’s secret. She clenched it and raised her head to look him in the eyes.

This was it. This was the chance she needed to explain to him all the misunderstandings. She could as well tell him her true feelings as well.

"I..."

Just then, the door to the waiting room opened and Max blocked her from them, taking the mask and covering her mouth with it.

"We’ll do this later." He said and she pursed her lips, lowering her head in disappointment. But then, she realized something.

"Wait, didn’t you say you locked the door?" She asked but he gave a sly smirk and wore her her shades.

"You’re the one who gullibly believed me." He said and laughed.

Valerie was once again speechless. So the door had been unlocked the whole time? Then, what would’ve happened if someone had walked in on them when they were at ’it’?

Her face burned red. She couldn’t even begin to imagine it. It was too much.

"You’re thinking dirty again, aren’t you?" Max whispered to her and lowered his head to speak directly in her ear, "Don’t worry, we have plenty of time later. We can continue from where we left off." He blew in her ear and she covered it, glaring at him with her flustered appearance which made him laugh. "You look like a cat. Feisty but pretty." He patted his head and turned to leave. "Come on, the check up should be done by now."

Valerie stared at his back as he headed for the door and sighed. She composed herself and glanced at the people who had walked in. Thank goodness they weren’t looking at them.

They might’ve already noticed Max if they paid a little bit of attention to them. She was thankful they didn’t.

She pushed up her shades a bit and started heading for the door as well.

Tiana’s check-up was done and she was having a little chat with the doctor when they both walked in.

"You’re here." She said and looked at the two with suspicious eyes and suspicious grin. "You sure took your sweet time."

"It’s only because my wife wanted to do something while she waited." Max spoke up and Valerie turned her head to look at him, wondering what nonsense he was going to blurt out as they made their way to stand behind Tiana.

"Yeah, sure." Tiana said, keeping her grin up. "You can’t fool me."

"But it’s true." He said and dreamily darted his eyes to Valerie. "She was so hot and..."

Valerie immediately shut him up with her elbow, hiring hard against his side and smiled with her eyes closed. He laughed.

"We burned our time somehow." She said and immediately decided to change the topic. "So, when will the results be out?" She asked.

Tiana gave her the eyes that meant she knew what the two had been up to but decided not to voice her thoughts and just play along with her daughter-in-law.

"The results will be out by tomorrow." She said. "But since you two chose to ’burn’ your time, I decided to have a little chat with the doctor over here."

"Oh? About what?" Max asked, putting his hands in his pockets, and this gave the doctor his go-ahead to speak.

"Miss Tiana was wondering how long it would take for a newlywed to conceive." He said, and Valerie flinched on her seat. She looked shocked while Max looked like he had heard a foreign word for the first time in his life.

"Con-conceive?" She asked, secretly clenching her fists on her dress. "As in, get pregnant?"

"What else would it mean, darling?" Tiana asked with a knowing smile. "You know, ’conceiving’ is a very important aspect of marriage."

"In my defense, if the couple actively goes at it for a week, there’s bound to be results in about a month, at the latest. Given there are no problems with either partner." The doctor calmly said.

"Haha." Max suddenly laughed and they all turned to look at him. He had this expression that made him look amused but at the same time, stunned. "Did you hear that, wifey?" He asked, turning to look at Valerie. "We have to try extra hard if we want to get you pregnant, as the doctor has said."

Valerie bit her lip and looked aside.

’Ugh, we haven’t even done it yet, so how am I supposed to conceive? Also, isn’t this too fast? We never really talked about a baby when talking about the contract.’ she subconsciously touched her belly. ’He doesn’t seem to hate the idea, but...’ she lowered he head. ’He didn’t say he was okay with it either. What if he’s just saying it because Tiana’s here? I don’t want to get my hopes up too much.’

"What’s wrong, dear?" Tiana asked and Valerie raised her head. "You’re thinking too hard about this. Or, are you having second thoughts about having a child?"

Max suddenly frowned and then looked sternly at her. What did that mean? Suddenly, the thought of Valerie refusing to bear his child seemed to provoke him.

He forgot to add such an important clause in the contract. What if she used that as an excuse to reject the idea?

He clenched his fists, still staring at her and waiting for her response.

"It’s not that." Valerie said. "I would be more than happy to, but..." She shook her head. "I believe it’s not yet time to bring a child into this world."

Max was silent. She didn’t exactly reject the idea but he still felt uneasy and mad about it. He felt like she used a round about method to say she wouldn’t want to get pregnant with his child and it bothered him.’

"Oh, in that case, it can’t be helped." The doctor said. "Having a child needs the consent of both parties. And when a child is born, it is very advisable that the environment is safe and conducive for its growth. You may have your reasons for not wanting a child at the moment but I’m glad that you are at least thinking about it without rashly jumping into it. Most people just jump into it and at the end, regret it because of unprepared measures and a bad environment."

The doctor commended her for it but she wasn’t even sure about it. She wanted a child. She really did. But she was scared. As the doctor said, a conducive environment was the best.

Besides, if she told Max that she said she wanted a child and that was not in his plans, he would get mad.

And if she were to see him strongly oppose that idea, it would break her. So she would rather give his words her own meaning and not hear it come directly from his mouth.

Max stared at Valerie as she stared at the ground. He couldn’t bear it. He wanted to hear it from her mouth. He needed to know if she wanted a child or not, and then he would know the next course of action.

On their way out of the hospital, Max kept his eyes on Valerie, still trying to figure out what her words meant. He told himself he would ask her but the list of things he wanted to ask were already piling up that it was giving him a headache.

If only he could just read her heart and know what she wanted... What she actually felt... then, he’d have little to no problem dealing with her.

"Maxie," Tiana called and Max snapped out of his thoughts. "Where to now?"

Max looked at her and then at Valerie who was walking side by side. The first thing that came to mind was somewhat out of nowhere but he said it anyway.

"Why do you two look so good standing next to each other?" He asked and Valerie blinked, confused. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

"What?"

"Jeez, are you trying to flatter lil ol’ me? All of a sudden?" Tiana asked over a chuckle. "What’s going on in that head of yours?"

Max smiled. What was going on in his head? A lot.

"Anyway, it’s the truth. Mom, you look so young even for your age that one would mistake you for sisters. You’re so pretty." Max said to her.

"Hm? More flattering? Is there something you need, my boy?" She asked but he remained silent and just stared at Valerie.

Tiana looked at him, wondering what he wanted and just decided on what her eyes were seeing.

"Are you trying to tell me to give you two some alone time?" She asked. "I get you’re newly Weds but don’t you fawn over each other too much? I mean, can’t I have a little time with my daughter-in-law too?"

Max laughed and shook his head.

"It’s not that." He said. "I just wanted to compliment you, that’s all."

He started walking ahead of them and a confused Tiana simply shrugged her shoulders.

Valerie was also confused but she seems to have blushed at the interpretation of his words.

’He was just calling his mother pretty but why does it feel like he was trying to compliment me and used his mother as a cover? He’s really weird. No, I’m the weird one. He must’ve had his mother in his mind the entire time but I’m over thinking it and making it all about myself. I really need to calm my nerves a bit more.’ she thought to herself.

Max glanced over his shoulder and then looked ahead with a smile after spotting Valerie’s red ears. She was flustered.
