Chapter 33: Another pretentious act

Valerie didn’t see Max after that and since there was nothing else to do, she bade her goodbyes to the head of the family and finally headed back to Ross’s mansion.

On getting there, she found her ’beloved’ sister weeping in her mother’s arms while telling her part of the story in the way that favored her best. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Her father, Bernard, stood next to them with a frown and the moment Valerie walked in, he faced her harshly.

"What sort of nonsense have you been going on about?" He questioned. "How could you have done something so vicious to your sister and in front of so many dignified people? Do you really want to drag her name, as well as Ross to the mud?"

Valerie slowly and calmly shifted her gaze from the ranting man to Lucy who was still weeping and her mother, Victoria, who was sending her death glares and she yawned.

She returned her gaze to her uncle who felt offended that Valerie was yawning at such a serious case and he flared.

"You... You’re going to be the death of me."

"Oh my, you noticed?" Valerie muttered with a grin that soon fell, replaced by a dead and blank gaze. "I don’t know what my ’beloved’ sister said to you but I do wish it had my interest at heart. After all, I was the one whose dress got stained and was called out for wearing red and was accused of having an affair with guards."

"Whatever happened to you, your moral standard is to blame and I’m very sure you deserved it." Victoria fired at her. "But our Lucy didn’t deserve such humiliation. She’s such a kind soul. How could you do this to her?"

"Ugh, Aunty, haven’t I told you to stop mumbling while you talk?" Valerie provoked her and shook her head. "Seriously, how do you expect people to hear you when you mumble all day long?"

"You..."

"You have some nerves. How dare you insult my wife in front of me?" Bernard flared and wanted to charge at her when her gaze turned into a piercing glare and she gave out a command.

"Stop right there." It was as if he was mandated to stop as his body would not take another step towards her.

It was the pressure. The forever pressure that came from her somehow overpowered him and he could not defy it. How though? He was the current Chairman and was not an ordinary person, having passed through a lot to keep the company running, so why could a little girl’s glare pressure him like this?

"Uncle, how did I insult your wife?" Valerie asked, lifting her hips and placing her hand on top. "I just told her to stop mumbling, is that bad?"

"You’re being unreasonable." Lucy yelled at her. "How can you be so mean? You were mean to me and I took it but how can you be so mean to Mom and Dad? They raised you and..."

"Zip it." Valerie glared at her and started walking away from them. "Before we get the wrong idea here, let’s all remember that I was the one eating moldy bread that the servants gave me on a certain someone’s order." She said and Victoria gulped. "I was also the one who washed my clothes and took care of myself. But since I couldn’t handle it anymore, I stood up and had all my rights given back to me." She turned her piercing gaze at them and said, "To put it simply, I was in charge of my own life, not them. I grew up without their care and lived on the money ’my’ parents left me, not theirs. So tell me, how exactly did they raise me?"

Lucy’s mouth was sealed shot as there was nothing else she could say on this. Then, she flung herself into her mother’s arms while yelling how mean Valerie was being.

Valerie rolled her eyes and sighed. It was too late to be dealing with cockroaches. Should she just ignore them now?

"Valerie, your insolence is getting out of hand." Bernard accused. "It’s already too much that you do whatever you like and taint Ross’s image but now you’re dragging my daughter into it. I cannot let it slide."

"And how exactly did I drag your daughter into it?" She asked, "Can you tell me what your ’beloved’ daughter said that I did?"

Lucy flinched and clutched onto her mother tightly.

"Don’t worry, dear. We’ll protect you." Her mother whispered to her and raised her head to meet Valerie’s gaze. "She told us how you colluded with some girls to frame her."

"Oh? How?"

"I don’t know how you got your hands on an invite but you should’ve stayed quiet. Why did you have to call her out and even say she came in through unfounded methods? You’re the one who used unfounded methods yet you accused her. You’re so despicable." Victoria spat out and Lucy held her.

"Mom, leave it. It’s not like we can say anything that’ll change her mind. It’s just who she is." Lucy said and glanced at Valerie, grinning in victory.

’They keep talking like they don’t already know how I’ll react.’ Valerie thought and decided to say a few words. "Hm, well, there was certainly talk about a sneak-in." She said, pretending to think but then she stopped and just shrugged it off. "Whatever, I’ll just be wasting my saliva on this matter." She yawned. "Well, I’m off to bed. If you have anything more to say to me, feel free to tell me in the morning. But not too early though, I think I’ll sleep in."

She nonchalantly strode towards the stairs, ignoring the glares, and made her way to her room, where Frankie was waiting.

"I see you’ve returned." Frankie said, "Welcome back. How was your evening?"

"I... Don’t want to talk about it." Valerie said, looking exhausted as she shut the door. Her shoulders slumped and her face became cold. "Did you prepare a bath?"

"Yes, would you like to wash up before going to bed?"

"Yes, thank you." Valerie said, and as she took off her clothes, she noticed the bruise on her wrist. It was from Max. Maybe he didn’t intend to hurt her but he got mad at what she said... She sighed.

She hoped that he felt a little better after giving her this bruise. Or would it have helped better if he had strangled her instead? She caressed her neck... His storing muscular hands, strangling her neck... Would that have hurt? Or...

"Are you okay?" Frankie’s voice broke her out of her thoughts and she blinked twice.

"Oh, yes. I must’ve been dazed because of how tired I am." She said, suddenly getting flustered and surprising Frankie.

Her master was not one to get flustered easily. Especially not when it was just the both of them. If she ever got flustered outside then it was an act, as it should be. But now... What could she make of this?
