Chaos In The Darkness; Salvatores's Salvation-Chapter 69: A safe place? - II
"Here?" He repeated immediately after. "I do not feel you want you in my house but none the less you are safe here."
Evelyn looked away for a second with the insult and the embarrassment that came with it.
"No I didn’t mean it like that," Evelyn corrected herself with the quick gulp, "I meant it like the don was attacked last night and I have never been attacked. It happened in his house and that makes me a little. . ."
Evelyn let the sentence hang at the end. No matter how much she wanted to find a word quickly to represent how she felt she came up with none.
"Unsafe? Unprotected?" Lucas added his words to her dictionary. "What is it that you feel? It is probably in the terms of something unsafe and uncertain. Isn’t it?"
He was understanding exactly what Evelyn exactly wanted to say and it scared her a little. Had he felt like there as well?
It was a given that some time in his life even Lucas would have felt uncertain about the protection being given to him and the life that he was bleeding. Even if he was the son of the richest man and the most powerful one.
She gave him as he did not because his words were his own and not so she was not taking any kind of accountability that came with it.
"I don’t know exactly how to put it in words Lucas but I have never been attacked and having a dead body right in front of my house with someone having blood come out of the skull. . . scared me." She revealed.
The moment she said the blood she could visualise the man who was dead and had fallen right beside her with blood coming out of his head and he was staring right at her with his dead eyes that had lost his life.
Lucas sighed and leaned across the counter that was next to the stove. "I can’t say that I have never felt like that because I have and I would not lie to say that it has not been just a few times."
What?
He gave her a nod. "Truth be told Evelyn, we have been attacked by many people who was stupid enough to think that they would win. Then come the others that continue to sing that they are better than the previous ones that attack us."
"So it happens all the time?" Evelyn could not help but ask in an exaggerated voice.
If Lucas was trying to normalise what happened last night that he was dangerously wrong and was going in the wrong direction completely.
Because according to what he said it was completely normal for everyone to feel unsafe and unprotected because he had felt like there many times in his life and was alive.
That was no reason for her to continue living here if these were the circumstances. Why was it that she was supposed to live on like that with the family that had offered to protect her under their roof?
Angelo D’alessandro could have easily denied having his protection extended to Evelyn but since he did not he was supposed to take care of her when she was quite literally inside his roof and home. In fact she was inside the house of the current Don of the organisation.
"No," he snapped at her, "but I cannot control neither can my family control what goes on in those bastards’ minds. Many of the attacks are controlled and eliminated right at the door but since some of them think that they have a better idea, they came in."
She scoffed. "My father was in the same business as you guys are and not only were we never attacked inside the house he was even weaker than you. Yet we never suffered an attack inside the place we lived in."
It hurt her to admit that her father was less rich, less powerful and a little bit of everything as compared to the Alessandro family but it was the truth and everyone knew that.
Nevertheless, that was not the point. The point was that even if Carlos Bianchi did not have as much power as this family did he did not let his home get attacked.
The point remaining being that getting attacked inside the house was the highest disgrace in all.
Evelyn could not even fantham how these guys were not understanding that.
"Look," Lucas began with a resigned look over his face, "I know that there was an attack inside the house and currently you question everything happening around you. But we are going to find a way around it.’
"What where are you going to find it and what-what are you going to find it for?"
What Evelyn Wanted to know was were they going to make sure that it never happened again or it is going to make sure that this attack was never being repeated again by the same person?
What she wanted to know two different things. Those two things were not answered by him clearly and she questioned them along with his words.
Lucas’s forehead creased and the displeased expression on his face told her that he was not appreciating the questions being sent his way.
"Evelyn, you do not need to care about anything else other than the fact that we will take care of everything." He said which did not really make her believe anything. "What my brother decides as the don is the best for all of us."
"Is it?" She questioned and was passive aggressive in tone even before she realised that. "It is always going to be the best for you because you are family and a blood brother. You are going to be protected on top of everything and I am someone who just came into this family and is going to believe in what a year or two’s time?"
Because at the end of the day if it came to saving Evelyn’s life over someone who was family it was obvious that they would choose the family member.
Which is why she had to get her priorities straight and if need be leave.
What she saw last night was a glimpse of what her life can be if she was not protected enough. She did not want anyone to fall on top of her for the need for her to be protected inside the house that you are staying in at night that she wants to lay beside a dead body.
Lucas Chuckled. "So all it took was one attack in the middle of the night for the first time that you come here and you are questioning all the choices that you’ve made and the ones made by your father?"
"My father assumed that I would be safe." She blurted out the sentence in defensiveness, feeling of the need to do so. "My father would have never imagined that there could be an attack on you."
Of course he had not, which is why he had chosen this family amongst his other friends and associates. Otherwise as well and could have gone under any family’s protection.
Lucas scoffed and shook his head. "Alright, believe whatever you want but if you’re saying that you are going away you might have to take it up with my father or my brother because this is something that I am not getting involved with."
"What? Why?" He was a member of the family too.
Did she take him to be an idiot? Lucas could not help but think about it as an attack to his family personally. They all were perfectly capable of defending themselves but with a surprise attack everyone was taken off guard.
"No family can ever tell you that there are going to be no attacks on them. All I can tell you is that we will take care of them without any one being hurt."
He stared her down as he said, not wanting her to think that he was nervous inside because he was not. Lucas knew what it was to be in a family like this and he had accepted.
Attacks could never be guaranteed that they would never happen and no matter where Evelyn lived she had to accept that.
Evelyn gave a scoff filled with disbelief. "So you want me to believe that this will never happen again and if it does that you will take care of it?"
"One of the two I promise you," he told her pointedly, "what I said was that attacks cannot be guaranteed to not happen. Pay attention to what I say, Evelyn."
Talking to look at this point was just like talking to his father or Salvatore. They all would turn into a carbon copy of each other when they wanted something to go their way just as Lucas was doing right now.
His face was as if turned into stone given no expressions of displeasure or annoyance to the situation. It was like talking to one of his family members.
That was when it came to Evelyn, would he share this?
