Chaos In The Darkness; Salvatores's Salvation-Chapter 48: The dinner - II
It irritated him and he could feel the anger coming back.
"Carmella!" He snapped and within seconds he heard the snapping of heel and she stood next to him.
"Yes, sir?"
He looked at her and the look alone on his face made her shake in her heels. "Did you not tell Evelyn to come down for dinner at 8:15?"
"I did, sir," she bowed her head, " but madam is sleeping."
"Did she eat?"
Carmella shook her head and answered dutifully, "No, sir."
Salvatore crossed his arms in front of his chest. "Did you try to wake her up?"
Carmella nodded and his temper flared.
Salvatore turned around and he climbed up the stairs in record time before opening the door to Evelyn’s room. He did not bother to stop in front of the door and not first but rather just walked in.
He stopped at the foot of the bed and stared at her. She was sleeping.
Leaning down a little, he fisted the covers before snatching them off of her. The impact made Evelyn open her eyes and when she saw him she scrambled to set up on the bed.
"Do-Don?" She stuttered and blinked repeatedly to get the sleep out of her eyes.
Salvatore snapped his fingers towards the door. "Dinner, now." After that he turned around and walked into his room. He closed the door behind him, took off his jacket and tie along with the small coat that he wore.
He walked into the washroom and washed his hands before opening the door and moving down stairs. This time Evelyn was sitting towards his left as he took the seat of the head table.
Carmella placed the dinner on the table consisting of three dishes before walking away.
"Serve yourself first Evelyn," Salvatore nodded to the food patiently waiting while having his arms crossed in front of his chest.
He watched as she reluctantly leaned forward and held out the first bowl and served herself one before moving on to the other. Then she nodded at him telling him that she was finished.
Salvatore then nodded and without any hurry served himself before digging in.
Once he started eating evelyne started to eat as well. She was still a bit shaken up by what happened. It still took some time to process that he had entered her room without her permission and had pulled the covers of her.
It stopped her heart when she saw that it was him standing at the corner of a bed without any expressions on his face. Evelyn was sure if she had never met the man before she would have mistaken him for the grim reaper.
"You were not at dinner when I came," Salvatore said before he shoved in another bite.
Evelyn stopped in the middle of eating and looked at him. She was not there?
Remembering who he was she replaced the fork in her play very quietly and gave him her full attention. She licked her lips slightly before saying, "I did you wait for you. I was told by the maid to come down at 6 and I had waited for you until 8:00."
Salvatore raised an eyebrow at her reasons. " Evelyn, none of my workers operate without my permission. That means she would not have called you at six to have dinner with me because it’s obvious no one has dinner at six in the evening. Not only that but you want me to believe that you went to bed at eight and then in fifteen minutes you are fast asleep to not even notice someone entering your room?"
" . . ." Evelyn’s mouth opened like that of a fish. She stared at Salvatore with obvious shock in her eyes. "I’m not lying, Don. She told me to come here at 6:00 and said that—"
He raised his finger, effectively silencing her. "My maid told you to come here at six o’clock for dinner?" He completed for her and Evelyn then noticed how stupid it looked. Why would anyone have dinner at six in the evening?
"I. . " Evelyn began to talk but then silenced herself. He was not going to believe her and he seemed pretty stubborn about that. So, why should she even try?
"Say it, Evelyn," Salvatore probed her, "I want to know."
Evelyn looked away. What was she supposed to tell him? The truth was the maid had asked her to come down at six and Evelyn had truly waited for him till late in the evening. After that she had grown tired and with the lack of food in her stomach, she just decided to have a glass of water and retired to bed.
She had told him the truth twice and he had it once and the other time he interrupted her in between. If we want to hear what she had to say then she would have been able to complete the story both the times.
"I am telling the truth, Don alessandro." Evelyn murmured. "I was called by your maid. I did not question why you had called me then."
Salvatore scoffed before he nodded. "Alright then," he said and then turned his head to the side, "Carmella!" He said loudly.
Evelyn watched the young women walk closer to them and then stand at the entrance of the living room. She then moved forward and stood behind Evelyn which made her face visible to Salvatore.
"Carmella," Salvatore said with the tilt of his head, "tell me when was it you just Evelyn to come down for dinner?"
"At eight, sir." Carmella answered without missing a beat.
Evelyn’s eyes widened and she turned her next so quickly to look at Carmella that it made the latter flinch. "What?" Evelyn scoffed. "Why are you lying?!"
Carmella’s eyes moved to Salvatore, "Sir . ." She said with a bit of uneasiness.
Salvatore looked at the maid before looking at Evelyn, "Now what?" We have chosen to completely disregard the feelings of the maid. If she had grievances then she could leave.
She shook her head. What now?
