Chaos In The Darkness; Salvatores's Salvation-Chapter 42: A little lunch - II
Evelyn nodded at him again and he raised an eyebrow at that.
"Why do you know so much?"
Flustered slightly, she replied, "Well, I just do that in respect."
"Do you respect me," he leaned back on the chair, "what do you fear to respect me?"
She gulped. "We- I think you know the answer."
He smirked slightly, "do I?" He taunted. "What if I refuse to acknowledge that? How about you tell me the answer?"
Evelyn licked her lips in nervousness. "You won’t mind?"
He shook his head.
"I do fear you." She answered. "That is the immediate reaction when we see a don from another family."
He nodded slowly. "We have never met before but our fathers were business associates. I have never seen you around."
Evelyn smiled sadly at the reason. " When people started threatening me, my father told me back. After my mother I was the only person in his life that mattered and I think he took it hard."
"Your step mother?" He watched her closely.
She gave a nonchalant shrug. "She got pregnant with my father’s baby and my father didn’t have the heart to not give the child his name."
Salvatore sipped his wine. "And she never never tried to get close to you?"
Evelyn shrugged. "I like to be alone and away from the centre of attention but the same cannot be said for her. She relishes the attention on her and I can’t stand it so we never clicked."
He nodded and watched as she took a sip of wine from her glass and did not speak until she placed it back on the table.
"Who is Giovanni Rosario to you?"
Evelyn looked slightly taken aback by the question. "Uh . . A friend? I mean our father’s worked together and um, our fathers were close associates so we had a lot of time spent together as kids."
Salvatore stared at her with a small tilt of his head. Why was she panicking? "Just a friend?"
She firmly nodded her head.
"A friend you were going to get in a car with. Do you trust him that much?"
"I got in a car with you." She blurted out before realising what she had said and slammed her hand over her mouth. "I mean—like not that, like not that what I said. I mean—"
"Have a sip of water," he said as he pointed to her glass.
Thankful for the distraction from not talking she hurriedly three sips from a glass very calmly as if in no hurry to complete the conversation going on.
She placed it down and fisted her top under the table in nervousness. "I have known him for a very long time so I trust him."
Salvatore scoffed. "Evelyn, when has it ever been that our long standing friends cannot betray us? If anything their betrayal will hurt the most."
His words are slightly offensive and that is what she felt about them. "I do know that." She told him. She was fully aware of how much betrayal could hurt, especially when it was friends that did that.
"Then why would you get in a car with him?" He repeated the same question and it somewhat annoyed her.
Why was he asking her the same thing when she had answered it?
"Because Giovanni had been a friend decades-old to me. Even if he did kidnap me, he is going to get nothing for me because I am practically walking along with empty pockets." She told him the truth of what she thought about the situation. Why would she be kidnapped when she did not receive much of the money that the organisation made? She was of no use to anyone anymore.
"You think that?" Salvatore asked her with a raised eyebrow. "I think you’re worth what Bella is at the moment."
Evelyn’s eyebrows shot up. " What?!"
Bella Rosa was a mafia Princess, a title that was stripped away from her the moment her father died and The Mafia was not passed on to anyone. Once again the title was held by Bella Rosa and Evelyn did not mind that at all.
"Bella Rosa is a completely different story than what I am." She told him and he shook his head.
"Bella is a mafia princess. But you are in the protection of my father, making you just like his daughter. Not someone he would adopt or acknowledge as his but someone who is under his roof." He explained. " So if your friend tries to establish a relationship with you, he is pretty much getting into the house."
Evelyn thought about it. Giovanni was not a bad prospect for marriage. He was from a good family and they even went to church not only that but the family was pretty harmonious and like hers. All respect to each other with beautiful respect is not love and none of them crossed certain boundaries as she heard about them many times.
Even his mother welcomed her with open arms anytime she saw Evelyn.
"I would not mind having him as my husband if that is what you are asking." She told him honestly. "I have known him for a very long time and not only that but his family likes me too and I don’t think there’s anything else I can ask for because they are pretty well settled."
"Is it?" He muttered without moving anything on his face except for his lips.
She nodded. "Yeah, I mean—"
Salvatore raised his hand silencing her, "the food is here." He said as the plates were placed in front of them.
Just as the waitress left Evelyn picked up the fork and knife but waited for the Don to start eating first. She did not know if this lunch was informal or not, nonetheless you would wait for him to eat first just as the protocol required.
He pointed to her food just trying for her to start eating first.
"But that’s no—"
"Go ahead, Evelyn." He cut her off and placed his cutlery down with no clear indication that he was waiting for her to eat and was not going to eat until she started.
Resigning to do what was told to her she picked up her cutlery and started to twirl the pasta.
"Mnh," an involuntary small moan left her mouth at the taste felt by her tongue, "this is so good."
Salvatore smirked a quick second. "This is my mother’s restaurant."
"Really?" Evelyn realised at that moment that she had actually not bothered to learn the name of the place when it was written on the menu and discourse outside the establishment. "I am sorry but I do not know the name of her establishments."
"Lexus," he answered, " that is the name she has kept for all her restaurants. She actually has a study chain going in Europe and America."
"Wow," Evelyn awwwed but choked on her food and Salvatore immediately offered her his glass of water. She took a few steps and calmed herself down before placing it back on the table. "I can’t believe it. I always heard that your mother had her achievements but the business might be worth in millions if it’s all over Europe and America."
"It is." Salvatore told her the truth. His mother had millions in her account but from whatever profits she earned through her businesses more than half of that money went to causes for the betterment of women in every country that she had earned it in.
All in all his mother liked to keep busy by doing this society good. It was ironic how his father did the exact opposite.
He stared at Evelyn who was enjoying your food without any remorse. The fact that she was much more charming and bubbly when he met her in the restaurant then now made him a little suspicious.
His blue-eyed and blonde beauty looked more happy than she was here right now.
"Evelyn," he began to talk when she looked up at him, "do you remember the time that you used to work in?"
She nodded and a small frown came to her face. "Yes, I do. Why?"
"You left the job before your father died. Why?"
Evelyn’s movements stopped. How did he know about that job? "Ho-how do you know about the job?" Because as far as she remembered they had not met while she was working. In fact the only time she met him—shit.
She did meet him and she met him at the diner. "Oh."
"Yes, oh." He watched her with the tilt of his head to the side. Evelyn would almost find that cute but on came it looked rather hot and fing sexy. "Why did you pull out of the job?"
She shrugged. "I went home?"
His eyes moved up from the answer and he shook his head at that. He chuckled looking down before looking up at her with an amused expression on his face. "Evelyn, I understand that I do not talk to you like I would address a soldier but when I ask you a question I want an answer. That clear?"
