Chapter 204: A charity event-II

~the prev Chapter had been updated before, this is new! ~

The flashes of cameras, the glances that she got the entire time when she was inside the hall, the mingling, the fake concern, it was all getting to her.

"I hope you are well now," another woman gushed, holding Evelyn’s hand, "the family never revealed the disease but you were sick for two years and I am so happy to see you well."

Evelyn kept the scoff inside.

With the glittering diamonds on her neck, fingers and ears, it was obvious that the woman had no idea who Evelyn was before today. She must have been provided with information about who was who and how to meet and greet.

"Thank you for your concern," Evelyn patted her hand.

The conversation carried on until she was swept away by Salvatore.

Her husband had also told her in the car after warning her that he was not stupid, that had two years of absence were covered by the excuse of sickness.

She had been sick enough to not be out of the mansion, maybe she was bedridden but Evelyn was not told about those details because no one else was aware.

The family had made sure that no one knew what kind of disease she had, meaning no one would know how to start a conversation and dig into the past.

"Where is she?" Evelyn spoke through her smile, making her cheeks hurt. She had not smiled in the past two years as she had done tonight. "I do not see any children."

"Because they are not here yet," he answered, tightening the grip of his fingers over her waist as a warning. "Try not to be so obvious. Relax the shoulders."

She immediately did. The shoulders that she had been forcefully slouched, slumped immediately.

Evelyn did not even know why she had been holding herself so tightly in the first place. The last heavy gathering that she had attended was at her wedding but even then it had been more easy going as compared to this one.

"When?" She asked again.

He rubbed his hands over her waist lightly. "When they make the announcement and want the money." He sighed, "the patient, Evelyn. It’s me who is donating millions."

Millions? Her eyebrows shot up at that amount.

"Not thousands?" She whispered a little closer to him. "Millions? To whom?"

He shook his head discreetly, yet she caught him. "I will make sure that it goes to the concerned orphanages."

Orphanages.

Arabella was going to be an orphan had she not come across her that night.

Evelyn nodded but her smile slipped once she came across Angelo and Alexis.

Instead of looking at Alexis who had a constant expression on her face, her eyes went to Angelo.

He was looking at her the same way Salvatore looked at everything. The same cold, calculating and impassive eyes.

"Behave." Salvatore warned in her ear before they reached his parents.

Angelo’s eyes moved from hers to her husbands. "Late." Angelo said as the first thing.

"Hey," Alexis lightly tapped his shoulder, "stop."

Angelo, in return, merely huffed and turned his eyes to Evelyn. "Nice to see you, Evelyn. How are you now?"

"Huh?" She stuttered at the sudden attention. "Me?" She pointed a finger to her chest.

Angelo gave a sharp nod in return. "No one else has been sick for the past two years." He stated the fact. "So I have to ask you the question."

This man was not going to leave any opportunity to tell her about her whereabouts. But why was he doing it?

Salvatore must have told his father she was. So what was the purpose of him asking the in public?

"I have been fine." Evelyn answered nonetheless. "Thank you for asking." She bowed her head slightly in respect to him.

This was a common courtesy. She was missing someone elder to her, if not more powerful. But this man held just as much as power his son did.

Meaning, that even though he was no longer the head of the organisation and ruling The Underworld from his side, he still controlled a lot of territories and men.

Angelo lacked no power.

His resources might be outdated. But will never going to be exhausted.

"Evelyn," Alexis patted her shoulders, "do you want to go to the powder room with me?"

"Pow—Yes," she agreed with her right away catching the drift of the women.

Excusing their presence from the men, they walked together to the Powder room which apparently was not the washroom like evelyn had earlier assumed.

In Alexis presence, there was nothing threatening or overwhelming. Even though the woman had come from a civilian background she held her self with standard and grace.

It looked like she, Alexis, was well aware of the fact that who she was in the protection of. It’s almost made her invincible and she was aware of it making her walk tall and proud and not scared of the people inside the room that belongs to powerful families.

"What did you help me?" Evelyn whispered to her while looking in the front.

"Not here," Alexis laughed lightly as she waved to a woman before exiting from the main ballroom and entering the Powder room.

"You need to learn which conversation meant meant for where." Alexis sighed and closed the door. "I might not know Italian, nor the rules and regulations of this world but you do not talk while walking."

She pointed to her ears, "too many years would be listening."

"Oh," Evelyn nodded. "What now?"

They were in the Powder room.

"How are you?" Alexis asked the first thing as she neared her. "I have been meaning to talk to you but I cannot do it without Angelo and I do not want him near you."

At times this civilan could be like an angel hidden in the worst of people.

"Thank you for that," Evelyn smiled but she still felt at unease. "And thank you for the help you did."

"Haha," Alexis’s reply was sarcastic before she waved it away. "Do not worry about that,. How about you tell me what is this rumour about you having a daughter that we are hearing? Angelo told me about it and as far as I remember my waiting your report you had a miscarriage." 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

As expected, the old man might have lost his throne but he had not lost his power and he was definitely not giving it away on his own.

He knew exactly what he was doing and he knew about her below which was impossible because it was admitted that was keeping an eye on her—

But it can be possible given that sum of Salvatore’s man did belong to Angelo when he was in power meaning that a court reporter Angelo anytime They wanted.

"I did have a miscarriage." Evelyn admitted even her tone justice how she felt about the situation.

Not many people know about it.

It was only Salvador and maybe his inner circle if they had been told, and then there were reports and the people in the hospital.

"What else were you told?" Evelyn gulped as she waited for an answer.

The problem was, it was the staff of Alexis and they work on her payroll. Even though never charity they were going to answer to Alexis and whatever she wanted to know.

Especially when it came to her daughter in law who had a Miscarriage.

Alexis gave her a sad, pitiful smile. "I know enough." The woman answered. "I have been told about your stay and every detail because I asked them for it."

Evelyn nodded. However she had not expected Alexis to be so honest about it. This woman was the exact opposite of her son and husband.

They were the people of a few words and she explain everything in detail and it not hiding any fact.

In family like them, Evelyn appreciated the presence of Alexis.

"And?" Evelyn asked further, "what else?"

"I know that Arabella not your daughter." She revealed the truth. "Does my son know?"

For a moment, her heart stilled.

It was obvious that Alexis did not know the truth.

The truth when she had gotten pregnant with the child of another man. What Alexis was assuming it was that the child belong to Salvatore and for some reason Evelyn had decided to run away.

Shit.

That was the complete opposite of what happened. Alexis must be assuming the entire fault was her child’s.

For a moment Evelyn considered telling the truth but what she was supposed to say? The true that have been buried underneath and if she told Alexis, Angelo would know for sure.

And Angela knew that, Evelyn could only imagine how long would Arabella survive even though she was not a biological child

"I.." Evelyn nervously gulped, "I..uh.."

"You tell me," Alexis gently urged. " You do not need to be scared of Salvatore Angelo." She whispered, almost like a mother. "If you choose to tell me the truth, I can protect you, Evelyn."

No, she was not. Because the moment Alexis would find out that the almost, if not all, the fault had been Evelyn’s, she would flip.

Shiva choose her son and the little support she had from Alexis would also slip away.
