Chapter 189: Another glimpse - III

Sleeping was the most difficult. Sleeping was difficult when the position always reminded her to keep her hands over her stomach. That was a given for Evelyn because whenever she would sleep straight on her back her hands were to be kept on her stomach and at the moment it’s not feel nice.

Only reminded her of something that she had lost even before she could have received it. Something that Evelyn had in her grasp and not at the same time but had lost it forever. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

All night long she kept on caressing her stomach as if she was caressing her baby.

It was difficult to accept the fact that there was no one inside her any longer when Everything just felt the same.

Her stomach still looked the same and slightly puffy, which has always been like signaling the first bump of a pregnancy in her tri-semester. It was still there and it still felt she was pregnant.

How was it possible that she felt something to be here when it was long gone?

One of the questions that repeatedly went on her mind was, was it really gone?

Were there really no hopes of bringing back her child? That they already pulled her baby out of her?

What if there was a small hope and no one was aware about it? But the blonde doctor had been pretty clear about what she wanted Evelyn to understand. Her baby have been even before she had been brought to the hospital meaning that when she had fallen down the stairs and blood her baby was gone.

The doctor has send a woman inside. She was a nurse and she had a book in her hand giving Evelyn all the silence she needed but the silence was also turning out to be poisonous.

"Ex-excuse me?" The hoarse voice brought out the attention of the nurse who immediately placed her book down and stood up with the gentle smile on her face.

"I just one has over you water. Hold on for a minute," she moved to the table where the glass of water was and Evelyn watched her carefully.

She placed a paper straw there and brought it to Evelyn lips who sipped it in.

"Thanks." This time her words were pretty clear.

"No worries," then I was replied back quickly and then stood in front of Evelyn after placing the glass of water on her bedside table. "Is there something else I can help you with?"

The silence in the room had turned out to be deafening especially when all she had to do was stare at a minimalist room that was stripped bare and had white walls. There were machines right next to her but did not interest her, leaving her in her poisonous thoughts that were roaming around in her mind driving her crazy.

"I..think I need to go out." She found herself to be a little uncertain first causing her to repeat the sentence. "I need to go out." She repeated this time firm in what she wanted.

The nurse nodded. "I can’t take you out of the establishment. So walking around the hallway would be ok with you?"

Evelyn nodded.

The nurse switched off the monitor and took out a few things that had been pierced into her arms.

She took out almost every sign except for the the stand where her glucose and her blood bag were.

"I have read your reports." The nurse work deep into the room and from an almirah pulled out a wheelchair. "So it would be difficult for you to work. Unless you choose to, I think this would be a better option."

The wheelchair.

Why did the wheelchair appear to be so weak in front of her? Maybe because wheelchairs were considered a symbol of disability. Maybe because almost always whenever someone has seen anyone in a wheelchair they were associated to be different.

"I don’t.. I can’t walk?" Her eyes finally strayed away from the chair and towards the woman for an answer.

"The wheelchair is just for today," she smiled and spoke gently. "We just don’t want any risks especially when you have sprained your leg and have injured several parts of your body."

Evelyn was not convinced enough. Sitting on a wheelchair and losing her child on the same night was messing up the other hand. At the moment, even the white walls appear to be messing up with her head.

She just needed to clear her head.

Evelyn nodded and the nurse step forward helping her to sit in the wheelchair before adjusting the stand next to head so that it would be easier to carry around.

The accident the room and entered the dim hallway. It was night and the hallway indicated that because only a few lights that give it a soft yet let glow were on.

Yet it was still better from the four white walls that he was in.

"What is this place?" It was a soft murmur that we spoke in hoping that the nurse would catch it. The silence here was deafening and Evelyn hoped to fill it up slightly.

"Hmm," she breathed out a sigh. "Its charity clinic and usually you will see doctors that a retired here or the ones that are passionate about helping for a cause. For the establishment, it is a place that helps abused women either heal themselves temporarily or forever."

"Temporary or forever?" How could someone manage to do that was out of her bounds to understand.

"Temporary because of Stockholm syndrome, some of the women are not ready to leave their abusers yet and we cannot force them to. Some that have decided that they have had enough, never want to go back."

If she had to put herself in this situation then Evelyn would definitely have to choose in the temporary position. Because if she ever decided to go out if it forever, she was going get dragged back by her golden hair.

The nurse slowly wheeled her, not having any kind of worry since it was already dark and most of them were sleeping.

"Who runs this organisation?’

The nurse was silent for a few seconds before she finally answered, "I don’t know."

Evelyn frowned and just as he was about urged the nurse to continue, the nurse chose to speak again,

"All I know is there is someone by the name of Nadine that handles all of it. There are many many donators and most of them are women. The thing is all of them are hidden behind a wall."

"But why?"

"I don’t know.." the nurse shrugged but that was something Evelyn could not see.

Why were all of them hidden behind a wall when the good openly found something that was going to help abused women?

Her mind was wrapped around completely but came to a stop when she heard the sound of crying.

"Where is that sound coming from?"

"It must be from the wall where the babies are kept." The nurse answered. "It is also a clinic for women."

"Can we go there?" Evelyn ignored the last part and focused on the end of the hallway where she could hear the noise coming from.

The wheelchair started to move a bit quicker before Evelyn her reply, "Sure,"

The round around the corner only to come in front of a nurse clutching a crying baby.

Noticing Evelyn and the nurrse wheeling her around, the one with the baby in her hands smiled at them. "Sandra. Hello ma’am,"

It was obvious that the nurse that was wheeling around Evelyn was Sandra.

"Hel—’

"What—what’s with the child?" Evelyn could not look away from the baby wrapped in a pink bundle.

It was so small.. the baby was exceptionally small and even though everyone has not seen many, this was something she could definitely deduce.

"Umm," the nurse looked hesitant and her eyes darted between Sandra and Evelyn. "It’s a moment this child is an orphan. The mother gives birth to the baby this morning but we have found no relatives and we obviously cannot have a baby over to the abusive father." She looked down at the child and muttered, "this one was induced into a premature birth because of him."

"I can take her." Evelyn rushed out the words as she leaned for the in her chair. "Please?" She raised her hands forward and begged for the baby without taking her eyes of the little bundle in pink.

"Well," the nurse answer still trying her best to to calm the crying baby, "so you could try.."

She looked closer to Evelyn and leaned down as she softly placed the baby in her arms before guiding her gently on how to do it.

"Hi," Evelyn whispered to the baby that had somehow entangled her fingers in her shirt and was now fistting it.

The little baby that hardly had any hair on her head.

"Arabella," Evelyn whisper the name of her mother as she continued to look at her child. "Arabella, my daughter."
