Chapter 175: Her home - II

"I don’t want to." Evelyn’s answer was instant. "I do not want to go back there."

"A life full of luxury where you have the option to work and not. A life where you could always have anything you want in the palm of your hand is somewhere you don’t want to go to?" He noted it to himself. "Now the only question I have left is, why?"

He was trying to catch on to the reason why Evelyn goes to win this but she had no intention of letting him know.

Perhaps he had not gotten to know about Arabella. Evelyn had made sure to keep it really low-key so that Arabella would seem like just another kid from a middle class family.

"I simply don’t want to." She repeated, more firmly than before. The more she did not get into details, the more he would look for it himself but Evelyn had to wait for the right chance.

"I finally have a life where there is no threat on me and there is no.. killing of innocence."

His eyes narrowed. It was clear that Marcelo did not like hearing what she had said. "Killing of innocence is always avoided, Evelyn and you know that. You were born in this business. And whenever it happens it is purely out of mistake."

"Is it?" She hissed as the anger that she had buried deep inside came to rise. "No, you do not care if it is a collateral being damaged. You never care if it’s an innocent dying in front of you."

Marcello stared at her before he very slightly tilted his face to the side and narrowed his eyes before a small smirk came to his face.

He chuckled again and shook his head to himself. "Are you forgetting who my father is?"

Her spine stiffened. The words sent shivers down her spine. It was enough for her to feel paralyzed for a quick second and enough for him to notice it.

"Do you think I do not understand mind games when I see one?" He caught onto it effortlessly.

It did not even take seconds to figure out what she was trying to do and Evelyn was just trying to deflect his attention from the situation at hand. She was trying to prolong it.

He had caught on to get within seconds.

"I might look the same," he admitted, "I might even behave the same way, but do not think of me as an idiot." He warned and pointed a finger into her direction warning her.

Suddenly the apartment felt into smaller than what it was. It was small to begin with but it was enough for three grown adults to be inside it but now the closed space felt like if she ever had to make a run, she would most definitely be caught.

"I won’t." Evelyn agreed to him right away. "I just do not want to go back and you have to understand that, Marcelo."

She felt her cheeks grow warm when he did not reply to her but kept staring at her.

"Tell me this," he once again effortlessly changed the topic, "have you heard anything from Salvatore or perhaps about him?"

Salvatore; the name that she chanted in her mind almost everyday because of the fear that had settled into her mind, heart and soul.

Salvatore must experience some sneezes throughout with how much she remembered him.

"No," she admitted in a low, small voice. "I have not."

He chuckled and then clicked his tongue but smile and amusement it not sleep away from his face. "Because none of the brides of a don have ever run away and succeeded in it."

"Even my mother, who had a forceful marriage has never been successful in running away from my father and here you are." He pointed out. "But you have to. Someone who had agreed to marry my brother."

He was angry.

"It had not even been two months for you to be married to each other," he chuckled again, "but imagine to everyone’s surprise the bride ran away."

God... They all must be raging at this point.

"Then why are you here?" She whispered rashly. "Why is your family not here yet? I thought by now you must have informed all of them and the next time that we would meet at each Other would be in all of their presence."

A side of his lip quirked up. "You thought right.." he sighed loudly, "but no. My father and brother will be too unstable to be around you. They have been insulted enough and my brother has been underground for the past two years."

Shit.

Of course, Evelyn had expected that there would be some kind of humiliation that would come on the Alessandro family but not to the extent of Salvatore going into hiding or in other words which sounded much better, underground.

That was worse than she had imagined.

"You know for a fact that the moment I appear in front of any of them, they will kill me Marcelo." None of the words that Evelyn spoke were uncertain. Because she knew that this would happen for sure.

"They would." He agreed right away, not trying to beat around the bush. "They would kill you and then portray it as it had been done by abductors or maybe that you had been killed inside the house." He pursued his lips slightly. "Anything could happen at this point."

The nonchalant look in his eyes was something that unnerved her truly. It was he was not even trying to help her. And why would he?

If anything she had already caused a lot of problems to his family. Of course, he was going to have the right to kill her if he wanted to and hand her over to be killed whenever he wanted to.

But Evelyn still had to try.

She Either had to try to get closer to him or she had to try to get him out of her life.
