Chaos In The Darkness; Salvatores's Salvation-Chapter 171: Caught - I
[Small recap]
"Here," he gave her some papers, "I want this file to be there with the accountant and tell him to verify everything. This one has to go with the marketing department and the other one to the sales." He pointed to each and every one of them before he sighed.
"What?"
He huffed. "He is coming here tomorrow and I want everything to be perfectly fine."
Even though she lacked the confidence herself, Evelyn gave him a dazzling smile, "It will be. Don’t worry." After all, what was the worst that could happen?
****
Jared was really serious about this investing deal. So much so that he had called everyone including evelyne to hours before their office started.
Like a dutiful employee she appeared when asked, even though she had to compromise with Diwa.
"Alright then," Jared clapped his hands and exhaled sighs. "I think we will be more than ready for them."
The man was for the first time experiencing nervousness. He constantly gave exhausted sighs and almost always appeared to be sweating. Either this meant a lot to him or there was something shady going on.
"You don’t need to worry about it, J," Helen, one of the employees who was working here for the past 15 years, waved his tenions off with a flick of her hand. "We have worked really hard for it and if they start nitpicking I will deal with them." She pulled her sleeves back and showed them her non-existence muscles. "See?"
"Unfortunately I do," Jared sighed, again. " Also unfortunately again, I would have to ask you all to take your lunch break early so that we all will be present and charged up when we present our ideas to them."
No one waited around to hear what he was mumbling. Even Evelyn did not.
She stood up when she had the chance and closed every file in front of her before taking the one assigned to her and back to the reception.
Then she put out the sign telling everyone the receptionist was on the break before she went out just like the others did.
There was a small cafe at the end of the road. Sometimes she found her colleagues there and sometimes did not. She was perfectly fine eating alone and today could not be a better day to do that.
She entered the small cafe where she was created by smiles. Evelyn and employees on a first name basis especially when there were only three more and two more working here.
"Hi—"
"Chicken sandwich and espresso?" The Cashier finished before her and Evelyn nodded with a smile.
"Yes but make it two sandwiches," she showed her two fingers before digging into her purse and fishing out her wallet. Then she took the exact amount and passed it to the cashier.
As Evelyn moved to her regular seat and waited while looking outside the huge window while keeping her back to the cashier she thought of how she had to give the exact money and count the exact change that she was supposed to be given.
There was a time when she would pass on a 100 dollar bill and just round the figure into a figure of 5 or 10. Now she had to count the pennies as well.
Within moments of food was served to her. Instead of a cup before coffee they had given her a takeaway plastic cup because this was something that Evelyn always looked on the go as she only drank half here.
The door opened and she heard the bell ringing before looking up. She chuckled when she found the familiar face entering.
"Hello," Peter sighed loudly before he slumped down on a chair diagonal to her and kept the bag he carried on the seat next to him. "Is it just me or the day has been utterly exhausting?"
"You always say that," she noted before taking a bite of her sandwich.
"Uh huh," he replied dryly, not giving her his attention before he raised a hand to the cashier and had his regular meal brought in.
"Anyway," he huffed and folded his arms across his chest. "How has your day been so far? We really do not have lunch together."
She bit Another bite off. "Well, to be honest, I have been at the office since 7 a.m. in the morning. Except for a few little refreshments, this is the meal I am having."
His eyebrows shot up. "Reall—"
"Hello," voice interrupted them, making Evelyn and Peterlook up because it was unfamiliar.
Evelyn let out a silent gasp as her mouth opened in shock and her eyes widened.
How could this be? She has remembered doing everything in her life correctly covering her tracks like a skilled Assassin and everything else was required of her to protect her daughter, but there was another member of her past that was utterly dangerous and would never let them live.
A daughter’s face flashed in her mind and Evelyn could feel her eyes water and her entire body heat up. She could feel the panic bubbling inside her and herself of being drowned in it.
This was not good. This was not good at all. This was the worst nightmare she could possibly have.
"Hello Evelyn," she heard him say and for a moment she could feel her heartbeat in her ears. It was right in her throat.
She could feel the vomit coming up. The bile that she tasted on her tongue because he was looking at his place once again after 2 years.
"I.." she mumbled, more like a whisper that slipped out because she did not know what else to say. "I..am.."
Evelyn licked har chapped lips but still could not Conjure up something to say. It was so difficult.
Crap. Shit..fuck... she Chandni the words in her mind. What was he going to do?
What was she going to do? They were going to kill her and her daughter without an ounce of remorse in their entire being.
These men were trained assassins. They did not feel anyone or anything. In fact most of the men in his family were trained to kill from a very young age. This started as young as 5 if they were in the line to The throne.
"Ma-Marcello.." she whispered the name of the dreaded man and felt her ears ringing.
He smiled at her, his eyes as dark as ever. "Hello, Evelyn," he repeated for the third time. "It has been a long time since we last met, has it not?" He tilted his head and like his brother did 1000 times in front of her. "I don’t know how long it has been. Would you mind telling me?"
She gulped again.
Games. That’s what all of them knew. Games would all of them were delighted to play a specially when they involved psychological and mental torture.
There was no way and Evelyn should have known that he would ever let her off the hook without trying to play games with her.
Somehow Evelyn knew that even before handing her off to his brother, Marcello would love to play with her for his own share of fun.
"Tw-two years.." she whispered and it was such a quiet tone that she was not so if the man in front of her heard it.
That was when she realized that Peter had been here. He had been here for the entire interaction and Evelyn knew by the fear that she was feeling inside, it must be visible to Peter. In fact it must be visible to everyone who could see her face.
Evelyn turned to look at Peter with a fear shining brightly in her eyes.
"Ah, yes," She heard him move. Marcello took the chair right next to her and took a seat there sitting directly in front of Peter. "I have not been introduced to your friend, I assume?" He turned to glance at Evelyn. "Is he a friend, yes?"
If he had been anything else and she would never utter a word about it. This was the time where her yes and no mattered. otherwise he could definitely be killed on the spot and Marcelo would definitely get away with it.
"He is." This was something she said quietly and firmly while holding Marcelo’s eyes. "He is just a friend."
"Really?" Marcello taunted. " I am happy to hear that otherwise it might have been very bad for you." He pointed his finger at marsalo before adding his middle finger.
It looked like he was pointing two fingers at him but Evelyn knew the truth.
In another language, the language of The Underworld, the language that she had seen and heard grown up using, told her that Marcelo was imitating a gun.
He would have shot Peter if he had said no without missing a beat.
Marcello did not look away from Peter who looked scared for his own life.
Shit, she closed her eyes and tried to think clearly, she had to do something.
