Chapter 42: Chapter 50: Don’t Run Around

Jane Sampson followed behind James Black with a grumpy face, sitting in the passenger seat. Since getting in the car, she hadn’t taken a proper look at James Black, but she was muttering to herself, "Did he just see her sneakily eating the Great General’s potato chips? But why didn’t he seem to react?"

Incredibly, he even helped her wipe the corner of her mouth?

The supermarket was bustling at this time, mostly with aunties and uncles who lived nearby, and there were also quite a few young people out for the weekend.

James Black pushed the shopping cart in front, while Jane Sampson had been somewhat distracted since entering the supermarket until he called her name three times, and she finally responded with a slow "huh?"

"What vegetables do we need to buy?" James Black extended his hand toward Jane Sampson, "Didn’t Aunt give you a list? Hand it to me."

Jane Sampson replied with an "Oh" and handed the list from her purse to James Black. There wasn’t much to buy, mostly ginger, green onion, garlic, and seasonings, and the rest Aunt told Jane Sampson and James Black to decide on their own what they wanted to eat and buy some to bring home. Aunt had brought the rest when she came to work in the morning.

After receiving the list, James Black walked ahead while Jane Sampson trailed behind lethargically. From passing by the snack zone, her eyes never left the shelves, watching all the way as she walked, looking just like the little boy not even three years old following behind her.

The little boy could still act spoiled and get a bag of snacks from daddy as a consolation, while Jane Sampson looked on with envy. She then glanced at the tall, imposing figure ahead, not daring to try to act coy with her "daddy Black" like that child did, worried that James Black might reward her with a good lecturing as consolation.

James Black concentrated on picking vegetables and didn’t notice the whirlwind of thoughts behind Jane Sampson. When he occasionally turned back to look at her, she was peacefully standing still like a vase next to him.

Since she showed no intention of coming forward to help him, James Black also didn’t call her to assist with the selection, thinking that picking up some ginger, green onion, and garlic at random wouldn’t go wrong.

"After bagging the stuff, we need to go over there to the queue to weigh it!" Jane Sampson reminded James Black in a timely manner when he tossed everything recklessly into the shopping cart.

"Hmm," James Black responded and after he finished picking everything they needed, he glanced at the long queue ahead and turned to instruct Jane Sampson, "Stand here and wait for me, don’t wander off."

"Okay," Jane Sampson answered swiftly and crisply, standing there with her eyes squinting and smiling tenderly, like an obedient little baby.

James Black felt something was off the moment he saw that smile of hers. Sure enough, when he stood in line behind the crowd, she was still standing there, but by the time it was his turn to weigh the stuff, Jane Sampson was nowhere to be found. Where she had stood stood, there was no sign of her.

So, had Jane Sampson now learned to say one thing but do another?

James Black didn’t make an effort to look for Jane Sampson and after weighing his items, he directly pushed the cart to the cashier’s counter to pay. He wasn’t surprised at all; just when it was almost his turn to pay, the long-absent Jane Sampson appeared in a hustle, embracing a heap of stuff and dumped it all into the shopping cart.

"I went to get some vegetables and you didn’t even wait for me?" Jane Sampson pouted and complained to James Black, bending over to rearrange the things in the shopping cart as she spoke.
