Chapter 231: Chapter 239: Exactly Right

James Black didn’t know whether to be angry or to laugh.

James sat up again, placing her on his knee once more, his thumbs gently massaging her temples on both sides.

"You could have said something if you felt unwell at the beginning. Why bear it in silence?" James couldn’t help but ask, his tone carrying a hint of reproach.

"I couldn’t say it," Jane mumbled. "You didn’t want me to go out, but I insisted. If I complained about feeling unwell, you would be upset."

"At other times, I don’t seem to recall you being afraid of upsetting me." James scoffed. At other times, she seemed all too eager to anger him, very much to his annoyance.

Jane pursed her lips and said nothing, but her expression clearly showed she wanted to refute James’s words.

"Speak up," James demanded, probably disliking this side of Jane Sampson the most, the side that had plenty to say but stubbornly wouldn’t utter a word.

James could understand many people’s hearts, yet the one heart he couldn’t read was Jane Sampson’s.

All his knowledge and skills seemed utterly useless when applied to Jane.

So infuriating!

Jane glared at James, her irritation apparent. "When you’re upset, you scold and lecture me. Don’t scare people with that unhappy look of yours."

"So I’m wrong to scold and instruct you?" James asked, raising an eyebrow in response.

"Yes! Yes! Yes! Absolutely right! Daddy Black, you are absolutely correct when you lecture me!" Jane bit her teeth in anger. If it weren’t for the comfort of James’s massage, she would have loved to kick him off the bed right then.

It was simply infuriating.

"Such a mess!" James flicked Jane’s forehead gently. "You don’t know how to behave when you have a headache. I can’t believe I have an adult daughter like you."

Jane covered her forehead with her hands, her gaze full of accusation at James. I’m already in pain, and you still hit me!

James knew well how much force he used and didn’t say a word. He moved Jane’s hands away and continued massaging her.

Jane decided to close her eyes and ignore James. After all, he always seemed to find a way to infuriate her.

After not seeing Jane open her eyes for a long time, lying there quietly, James thought she had fallen asleep again. After massaging for about ten minutes, he gently picked her up and placed her back on the bed.

Every action James took during this process was extremely gentle, fearing that he would wake Jane up once more. If she could fall asleep earlier, given her discomfort, that would be best.

But this time, Jane hadn’t fallen asleep. After James laid her down and lay down beside her, he turned off all the lights in the room.

A few seconds after the room went dark, Jane opened her eyes, staring into the endless night, the sound of his breathing in her ear.

In the darkness, she felt James’s movements as he held her in his arms, feeling the warmth of his hand on her waist.

"James Black."

Taking advantage of the night’s cover, Jane suddenly called out his name.

"You’re not asleep?" Her voice was too crisp, not at all like someone who had been woken up.

Jane didn’t respond to James, instead starting to speak a long, long speech.

"James, actually, I learned to be independent at a very young age. When I was in my teens, I went abroad for the first time by myself. I took the airplane alone, disembarked on my own, found the person waiting for me at the airport by myself, stayed in a foreign hotel alone, stood on a large stage alone. Later, after marrying you, I moved out of the Sampton family home, and I lived in our new house by myself. I could take very good care of myself on my own."
