CEO's Reborn Wife-Chapter 178 - 186: A Few Phone Calls
"By the way, I heard a few days ago you went to record Mr. Humming’s show? How did it feel? It seems like a lot of seniors went to that episode, were you able to take a group photo with them?" Matthew Chip lifted up his costume and sat down next to Jane Sampson, looking like he was ready for a long chat with her.
"The seniors were all very considerate and didn’t put on any airs, so they were easy to get along with. Mr. Edwards is also a very approachable person; you can joke with him all you like and he won’t get angry," Jane shrugged, "Unfortunately, after the show they had other notices to attend to, so we didn’t get the chance to speak informally before they left."
While Jane was talking, Matthew observed her expression intently, feeling somewhat dissatisfied. He thought that Jane, being a newcomer, didn’t seize the opportunity to close in on these resource-rich seniors which Director Daniel Taylor had handed her on a platter.
Matthew thought, if it had been him, he would have even shamelessly insisted on building a relationship with Hugo Edwards and Mr. Humming, getting a phone number or adding them on WhatsAPP, to facilitate private chats to foster closer ties.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t him who got to join the show this time.
Jane, lacking mind-reading abilities, naturally had no idea what Matthew was thinking. Seeing that he had stopped talking, she redirected her attention to watching the male and female leads practice their lines. Truth be told, by watching carefully, one could indeed learn a lot, such as expressions and movements.
Unlike Jane’s everyday life, which was as leisurely as a little monk’s, over at the guard team’s headquarters, James Black’s every day was spent drenched in sweat.
As he walked from the practice field to his office, he encountered a couple of his subordinates chatting in the corridor and casually listened in for a moment. The two quickly noticed him and hastily greeted him.
"Chief."
With a low hum, James responded and then asked, "What were you two just talking about?"
"Oh, nothing much, just complaining about my wife constantly phoning me, asking all sorts of questions and being a real nuisance," the man spoke up to this point, sounding like any other man annoyed by his nagging wife, but as he continued, even a fool could discern something else, "My wife, she has no other flaws, just loves sticking to me. If she can’t see me, she’ll call just to hear my voice, saying she misses me. Sometimes, when we’re on the phone, she can laugh like a little fool. Chief, tell me, with my wife being such a silly girl, how could I not answer her calls, right?"
After listening to all this, James once again felt that he really wasn’t cut out for chatting, since he had nothing to add. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
After all, his wife was not like that.
"Chief, how many calls does your sister-in-law make to you a day? Is she as annoying as my wife?" the man enquired.
How many calls a day?
The corners of James’ mouth twitched almost imperceptibly; Jane Sampson was the kind of person who might not even bother calling him once in a whole year. The fact that she called him twice last Monday was already an anomaly.
So much time had passed, yet James was not at all surprised that Jane had slipped out of his life again, becoming nearly nonexistent.
"Hmm."
With an indifferent grunt, James continued walking forward briskly, leaving those two chatterboxes behind, puzzled by his noncommittal response.
What does this "hmm" mean for the number of calls a day?
Back in his office, James took his mobile phone out of a drawer. As the screen lit up, he was greeted by the photo of Jane pulling a funny face – the one sight he has seen every day when making a phone call. It might be the only way Jane existed in his life.
