Chapter 140: Chapter 148: Tell Her You’re Not Free

Jane Sampson pouted, her lips moved as she murmured, "Not willing to divulge a single word."

This dinner, she had been busy for nothing!

James Black had good hearing, he did hear her but felt there was no need to speak. Talking too much would end up scaring her in the end.

For a time, neither of them spoke, and only the light sounds at the dinner table could be heard—occasionally the clink of chopsticks against bowls, or the tap of a soup scoop against the edge of the pot. The house was eerily quiet.

If Jane’s mobile phone on the tabletop hadn’t suddenly rung, this silence would probably have continued after the meal or even until bedtime.

It was always like this anyway. Between Jane Sampson and James Black, there was little to no communication, no common topics of conversation. Jane did not understand James’s life and work; similarly, James was clueless about what Jane liked.

Jane had previously called this situation a ’generation gap,’ after all, James was quite a bit older than she was; when she was in the first grade of middle school, he was about to graduate.

Because the mobile phone was on the table, James Black caught a glimpse of the caller ID as soon as she lifted her eyes.

It was Julie Sampton.

Jane Sampson answered the phone slowly, her tone neither warm nor welcoming, even somewhat coldly greeted with, "Hello."

"Jane Sampson, are you free to meet now?" Julie Sampton asked directly without preamble.

James Black had set down his chopsticks on the tabletop at some point, and he was close enough to faintly hear Julie asking Jane something. Before Jane could reply, James’s cool voice came first.

He said, "Tell her you’re not free."

Not caring if the person on the other end of the phone could hear him, he simply left it at that.

Jane Sampson glanced at James Black and echoed the words to the person on the phone, "I’m not free."

"Are you at home?" Julie Sampton asked suddenly, as if she might have heard James’s voice.

"Yes, at home, what about it?" Jane replied, laughing after she spoke, her laughter tinged with sarcasm. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

"What can you do at home? Clearly, you have the time. Don’t want to meet me, is that it?" Julie’s tone and words began to seem somewhat aggressive.

James Black had already walked up to Jane Sampson, took the mobile from her hand, and put it to his ear, his voice chilling, "I’m at home, what do you think she can do at home?"

Julie Sampton hadn’t had time to react to the sudden change in voice on the phone when James’s voice came through again.

"If you have business with her, come directly to the house. Jane Sampson is not someone you can boss around." After saying that, James Black ended the call and placed the mobile phone back on the dining table before returning to his place.

After sitting down, he didn’t explain a word, simply picked up his chopsticks and continued to eat, as if the person who had just snatched away the mobile phone wasn’t him.

Jane Sampson was still holding her chopsticks, in a daze.

That remark, "I’m at home, what do you think she can do at home," why did it sound so embarrassingly suggestive?

Noticing that Jane Sampson had remained motionless, James Black gently rapped his index finger on the desktop, producing a steady tap tap tap sound, and waited until Jane looked up at him unconsciously before he spoke, "Eat."

"Oh," Jane Sampson nodded like an obedient baby, took a few bites, but eventually couldn’t help but laugh mischievously at James Black, "You hung up on Julie Sampton’s call, she must be fuming right now."
