CEO's Contract Obsession-Chapter 58: Operation Day
They arrive an hour early on Jayson’s operation day and their uneasiness dwindled as soon as they saw how excited Jayson was. The happiness the boy felt cannot be denied by the look on his face. It was painted with smiles and laughter.
"Aunt Amy, Uncle Henry!" Jayson roared with excitement as soon as he saw the two enter the room. The room was filled with nurses, interns, and residents preparing Jayson for the operation and some were there to learn.
This operation is something to look forward to for the hospital and its staff since two legs will be operated on at the same time with one pediatric orthopedic team each. A lot of surgeons and med students will be watching the procedure from the operating theater for it is a rare case for them.
"Are you ready for today?" Amy asked Jayson while trying to hold her emotions.
"Yes, I am super excited. The doctor said if I eat and rest well, I can do the therapy after two weeks, then if I will work hard in each session I will be able to walk sooner," the smile on Jayson’s face is contagious, everyone on the room can’t help but smile and laugh with him.
He views everything very positively and that is thanks to his grandparents who always cheer him up and advise him in every situation he gets into.
Henry tousled the boy’s hair which made Jayson laugh, "Be sure to do it alright? I am looking forward to our travels together. And I have a surprise for you in my backyard when you get home," Jayson’s eyes widened at the excitement, and nodded with a grin.
Soon, the nurses and interns took Jayson to the operating room, and his family was escorted to the waiting room just outside it. Alice decided to stay with Jena in Jayson’s room since it is an 8-hour operation and Jena might get bored in there.
Amy brought her laptop to the waiting room so she can work while waiting for Jayson, while Henry, Rei, and Robert decided to play cards. Three hours had passed and Amy still have not written anything and started to pace in the room while looking at her phone trying to distract herself.
Henry let her do her thing thinking that it will be best so she can be at ease. Another hour passed, and Alice and Jena went to the waiting room to bring them lunch but Amy is not in the mood for it.
"Amy you have to eat, Jayson is doing fine just like what the doctor said two hours ago," Henry tried to coax Amy to eat lunch but was not successful.
"I will not die if I miss one or two meals. I’ll be fine, just don’t mind me," Henry sighed at her stubbornness but he can’t do anything about it since she has a point.
It was the sixth hour when a doctor when out of the O.R. to give them an update. "Jayson is doing great but we are low in blood, we already requested more from the blood bank but there was some delay since other hospitals requested first. Do you know anyone who can donate O negative now?" the doctor asked everyone in the room.
Amy got worried instantly and only heard the part that Jayson needs more blood due to too much jitter, "I-I don’t know a-anyone except for his f-father," Amy stuttered and was about to cry when Henry stepped in.
"It’s ok love, I am O negative, calm down, it is just a precautionary measure right doc?" Henry said as he rub Amy’s shoulder to soothe her.
"Yes, we don’t need it yet but we just want to make sure that we have enough supply since we used a lot of bags already," the doctor assured Amy seeing the worry on her face.
"Mr. Welsh, come with me please, let us check first if you are qualified to donate today," the doctor added.
"I am sure I can doc, I have prepared for this just in case since I have read Jayson’s profile before. And I regularly donate my blood to the Red Cross knowing that it is hard to find." Henry was already aware of these possibilities since he was very thorough when he spoke with Jayson’s previous doctor and he had prepared everything beforehand, including himself.
"That is great then," the doctor then looked at Amy, "If I may, I will borrow Mr. Welsh for a moment."
"Can I come? I want to go with Henry," Amy asked as she hold onto Henry’s hand. She does not have anything to do in the waiting room anyways and it was the least that she can do for Henry. He had helped her a lot financially and now he is giving out his precious blood too.
Negative O blood is not that common after all and it is another one of her luck that Henry has it. She just keeps on getting more from Henry and she knows that she is indebted to him for life. Not that he minds it but Amy she wanted to return to him all the good things that he has done for her, in a way this is her, showing how thankful she is.
"Alright, if you insist, let’s go then, let’s not keep them waiting," the three then proceeded to the blood donation facility in the hospital.
Just like Henry said, his lab test passed which made him qualify to donate his blood. "Amy, I am ok really, it is not my first time to do this," Amy kept on checking and asking Henry if he needs anything while he lays down on the bed after the extraction.
He is enjoying how Amy takes care of him but at the same time, he can see how worried she is for him when there was really nothing to worry about.
"How can you say that you look pale and you’re nauseous," Amy retorted.
Henry chuckles, "It is normal after the extraction of blood, come here. Lay down next to me, be my pillow and I will be alright in no time."
Amy granted his request and he drifted off to sleep right away. She shifted to face him as soon as she felt him relaxed. She moves away the stray strands of hair on his face.
’He looks so peaceful when he sleeps, I can do this all day,’ she said to herself admiring the man in front of her. ’Thank you, Henry,’ she then kissed his forehead and slowly remove his arm so she can get off the bed.
Eight and a half hours had passed but still, the procedure is not done. Amy is again getting restless contrary to Jayson’s grandparents who were calm as they watch the TV in the waiting room. Alice and Jena joined them in the eighth hour to welcome Jayson when he gets out of the operating room. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
But Jena was pouting and obviously upset when she didn’t see her big brother right away, "Grandma, where is my brother? You said he will soon get out of that room," Jena asked while pointing to the O.R. entrance.
"He will be out in a bit darling, maybe the doctors are just wrapping up everything before they bring Jayson out," Alice calmly explained to her granddaughter as she tucks the little girl’s hair behind her ear.
Henry soon join the rest after feeling rested and fine again. "Henry, what if something went wrong? What is taking them so long?" Amy anxiously asked Henry when he sat beside her.
"Let’s ask the nurses then, Rei, go and ask the nurse to get an update from the O.R." Rei stood up but the operating room’s door opened before he can walk away from his spot.
It was the lead surgeon who went out and he removed his cap before approaching them. But Amy beats him to that, she literally runs to him not wasting any more waiting time.
"Is Jayson ok? What happened? Was the operation successful? When can we see him?" Amy was in a rush for answers not noticing that the doctor is giving him a smile of success.
"Woah, Amy dear, let the doctor speak," Robert held onto both her arms shaking her lightly upon seeing the doctor smile to calm her down.
"Sorry, it took a bit longer than expected. Jayson’s blood dropped significantly in the last phase of the surgery but thanks to Mr. Welsh we were able to recover it quickly. The assistant surgeon is now doing the closing suture then they will clean him up, and put on some bandages before they bring him to the recovery room," the doctor explained thoroughly.
Amy together with Alice pounce on the lead surgeon and gave him a very tight hug. The doctor was flabbergasted by the sudden attack. "Ladies, you’re killing the doctor. Let him breathe my goodness, you two..." Robert gently pulled Amy and Alice away from the poor suffocating doctor, while Henry and Rei laugh at the scene before them.
Everyone felt relieved at the good news and Alice started shedding tears of joy as she carry and hug Jena and her husband.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you so much doc. We really owe it to you. I don’t know how can I ever repay you," Amy was still not letting go of the doctor’s hands as she genuinely thanked him.
Henry then moves to Amy and snaked his arm around her waist after seeing how Amy holds onto the doctor’s hand. Even if the doctor was way older than him, he is still a man and he is not comfortable with the two holding hands like that. Amy got his signal and let go of the doctor’s hands.
"No worries dear. Mr. Welsh here can certainly manage that," the lead surgeon said when he pointed at Henry and winked at Amy, making it look like a joke. But only Henry and Rei know the meaning behind the doctor’s words.
