Chapter 105: Chapter 93: Conditions

Just as Guan Yuming was on the phone with the bureau, three armored transport vehicles were heading toward the Cai Family Stronghold. The insignia on the transports was that of a blooming black orchid, its inky petals dark yet brilliant.

Seated inside one of the armored vehicles were He Yaoxian, the Molan Company’s new director of external affairs, and Wan Poming, the captain of Field Security Team 3.

He Yaoxian looked to be in his late twenties and wore a perpetual smile. He was slightly heavyset but seemed brimming with vitality.

At his level in the Molan Company, even those who had never trained in martial arts were provided with a yearly quota of drugs to maintain their physical condition.

Although he was nearly forty, he still had a full head of hair and firm, powerful muscles. His eyes were exceptionally bright. It wasn’t just his youthful appearance; he only needed three hours of sleep a night to maintain his energy and focus for the entire day.

This was all thanks to techno-pharmaceuticals. The drugs one received differed by rank; the higher the position, the greater the allotment. But by the same token, if he couldn’t hold on to his position and failed to deliver satisfactory returns for the company, then everything he had been given would vanish.

’But how could that happen?’

He might have felt inadequate in a fiercely competitive place like the Central City, but here at the Yangzhi City branch, all he had to deal with were minor local matters. There was no reason he couldn’t handle them.

He glanced at Wan Poming. The captain of Team 3 was a man of few words and hadn’t said a thing the entire trip. He Yaoxian was rather pleased about this. ’People like him make good tools,’ he thought. ’Tools don’t need to ask questions; they just need to obey orders.’

He asked comfortably, "Captain Wan, are you confident about this mission?"

Wan Poming replied with a composed expression, "Director He, I’ve reviewed all the files on Fang Dawei and his crew. The experimental tech they’re using is all obsolete or defective, with side effects. Even if they’re holding a tactically advantageous position, my team can take them down in five to ten minutes."

He Yaoxian asked, puzzled, "Why five to ten minutes? If you’re so confident, shouldn’t you be able to take them down in the shortest time possible?" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Wan Poming explained, "Because some of them might undergo abnormal mutated changes under the stimulation of their implants. The extent varies from person to person, which can make things a bit more troublesome. But it’s not actually a bad thing. The company is sometimes quite happy to see it happen, as it provides the labs with new ideas and materials."

"As expected of a company veteran," He Yaoxian praised him. As the newly appointed director of external affairs, he was indeed unfamiliar with these things. His previous responsibilities mainly involved liaising with subsidiary companies and various municipal departments, so he rarely handled matters like this.

This was mainly because in a place like Yangzhi City, some matters didn’t require any special attention. The people at the lower levels could usually handle things themselves, and word would never even reach the higher-ups.

"Director He, we’re almost there," his female assistant reminded him softly from the side.

He Yaoxian glanced outside and saw Patrol Officers stationed along both sides of the road, with patrol cars driving back and forth. They looked quite busy. He couldn’t help but give a wry smile.

The three Molan armored transports turned onto an upward slope. After a short distance, they drove into a large, open area. It was situated directly below the outpost’s command post, and many Patrol Bureau vehicles were parked there as well.

After the vehicles came to a stop, a squad of security guards disembarked first. They were fully armed, holding specialized firearms, wearing full-face helmets, and dressed in double-layered protective clothing. Once they had established a security perimeter, He Yaoxian finally stepped out. He glanced up at the sun and remarked, "It’s a bit hot today."

His female assistant quickly took out a fan and began fanning him.

He Yaoxian pointed toward the guard post at the outpost. An aide immediately went to speak with the Patrol Officer on duty, stating that their party had arrived and needed to see Director Guan Yuming. He was also to arrange the handover, after which the Molan Company would take over the situation.

The aide quickly returned. "Director," he reported, "they said Vice Director Guan isn’t here. He went to the village up ahead to comfort the villagers."

"Comfort the villagers?"

He Yaoxian scoffed. He didn’t believe a word of that excuse. ’Stalling for time?’ he thought. ’It’s useless. If the Patrol Bureau was capable of taking down Fang Dawei’s crew, they would’ve done it long ago. Dragging this out won’t change a thing.’

He started walking back toward his vehicle. "In that case," he said, "since Director Guan is too busy to see us, we’ll just have to trouble ourselves to go and see him."

But just as he spoke, a convertible SUV from the Patrol Bureau drove toward them. His female assistant glanced over and said, "Director, it’s Guan Yuming. It seems he isn’t in his official car."

He Yaoxian involuntarily stopped in his tracks. The convertible SUV quickly approached and came to a stop. All the surrounding Patrol Officers snapped to attention and gave a solemn salute.

Guan Yuming returned the salute from inside the vehicle before stepping out.

He Yaoxian took the initiative to walk over. Forcing a smile, he said, "Director Guan, I heard you went to the village up ahead to handle some business. Have you managed to sort things out?"

Guan Yuming said, "It’s all been handled. We’re about to pull out."

He Yaoxian was very pleased. Guan Yuming’s cooperation would save him a lot of trouble. The Molan Company could influence some decisions made by the Administrative Affairs Hall, but they had little leverage over the Patrol Bureau, as it answered directly to a higher authority.

In the city, the Patrol Bureau’s primary target for surveillance wasn’t really outlaws and criminals—it was the Molan Company. Both the Patrol Bureau and Molan Company were well aware of this fact.

He said, "Director Guan, in that case, let’s complete the handover as soon as possible. After all, we need to take down Fang Dawei’s crew quickly and give the Administrative Affairs Hall a proper account of things. It’s beneficial for both of us, isn’t it?"

Guan Yuming said, "Fang Dawei and his crew have caused considerable harm. They’ve been wanted for so long, yet our Patrol Bureau only managed to locate them now. We even allowed them to cause such a major disturbance in the city. It’s truly shameful."

He Yaoxian sighed. "Director Guan, you’re being too hard on yourself. Yangzhi City has over six million people, and the Patrol Bureau has to manage such a vast area. Some oversights are inevitable, don’t you think?"

Guan Yuming said, "Which is why we must correct these oversights. While it’s difficult to prevent every problem before it starts, we can at least try to lock the barn door after the horse has bolted."

He Yaoxian raised an eyebrow and chuckled. "Director Guan, this really isn’t your fault. See? The Administrative Affairs Hall isn’t planning to press the issue, and our Molan Company is willing to help resolve this problem. We’ll even give the Patrol Bureau some positive press in the papers afterward. A happy ending for everyone, what do you say?"

He assumed Guan Yuming was trying to negotiate, a song and dance he was quite familiar with. He could arrange for some positive press for the Patrol Bureau, but that was as far as he’d go.

"Then I must thank you, Director He." Guan Yuming paused for a moment before continuing, "However, there’s no need for your company to trouble itself with this matter. We have already resolved it. All of the outlaws have been neutralized or apprehended. Not a single one got away."

He Yaoxian was stunned. He subconsciously glanced from side to side before looking back at Guan Yuming. "Director Guan... resolved? You can’t be serious."

"The prisoners and the bodies are all right there," Guan Yuming said. "It will be in the papers today. The Patrol Bureau has zero tolerance for those who cross the line." He shot another glance at He Yaoxian. "Well, Director He, I must get the remaining prisoners back to the city. I have a pile of work waiting at the bureau, so you’ll have to excuse me."

With that, he climbed back into the SUV. Then, he suddenly looked back. "Oh, and one more thing. You’ll probably need to revise the article for your company’s newspaper. Sorry to trouble you with it, Director He." He then gave a signal, and the vehicle started up and drove off.

At the sound of a whistle, the columns of Patrol Officers shouldered their rifles, turned in unison with a rustle of gear, and began jogging down toward their transport vehicles.

He Yaoxian’s expression turned ugly. ’The Patrol Bureau actually handled it? Damn it!’

Failing his mission was a secondary concern. The main problem was that Fang Dawei’s crew was involved in numerous secrets, and now there were survivors. With them in the Patrol Bureau’s custody, there was no telling how much political trouble could be stirred up.

’Molan itself wouldn’t fall, nor would it suffer any major losses. But in the aftermath, the higher-ups would surely look for a scapegoat. And the most suitable person for that role was...’

His face instantly turned pale, and his entire body began to tremble. The female assistant rushed to wipe the sweat from his brow, but it was no use.

Wan Poming watched him in silence, not uttering a word.

’Over the years, he’d seen far too many company men like this. Glorious and powerful while in their posts, but one misstep and their fall would be miserable—too gruesome to even watch.’

He Yaoxian’s mind raced. ’I have to save myself.’ He grabbed his female assistant by the collar, his face contorted with desperation as she stared back in terror. "Go find Director Guan!" he snarled. "Or even one of his aides! Tell him I’ll do my best to meet any demand he has! If I can’t authorize it myself, I’ll pass it up the chain!"

Meanwhile, the Patrol Bureau Director’s official car was heading back toward the city. Its interior wasn’t extravagant, but it was spacious and comfortable. The driver was also highly skilled; even on the roads outside the city, the ride was exceptionally smooth and steady.

Senior Brother Wu was lying on a reclined seat, speaking to Chen Chuan, who was sitting across from him and gazing out the window. "I really have you to thank for this ride, Junior Chen."

Chen Chuan replied, "It’s nothing compared to what you did, Senior Brother Wu."

Senior Brother Wu chuckled and sat up straight. "I only did it to avenge Brother Liu," he said. "I don’t care about anything else. Junior Chen, after today, I, Old Wu, am completely in your corner. If you ever need anything, just say the word. I’ll be there, no questions asked. I swear it."

Chen Chuan then asked, "Senior Brother Wu, if you had been in Senior Brother Liu’s position today, would you have gone to save them?"

Senior Brother Wu thought for a moment. "In the past, I might not have," he admitted. "But in the future..." He said with conviction, "I would!"

Chen Chuan nodded. He extended his hand. "Chen Chuan, first-year student at Wuyi University Hall."

Senior Brother Wu was stunned for a moment, then a light shone in his eyes. He reached out, grasped Chen Chuan’s hand firmly, and said with equal gravity, "Wu Han, second-year student at Wuyi!"

Just then, the car made a turn. Noticing they weren’t on the road back to the university, Chen Chuan tapped on the partition in front of him. When the communication window slid open, he asked, "Inspector Bei, excuse me, where are we heading?"

The director’s deputy in the front passenger seat smiled and said, "Brother Chen, Director Guan gave instructions. We’re to take you to Captain Nian’s home first so you can let his family know you’re safe. After that, we’ll take you back to the university."
