Celestial Human Diagram-Chapter 104 - 92: The Net
Below the Sentry Post, just as Chen Chuan and Fang Dawei began to fight, the Spider-Man, Seventh Brother, was climbing out of the secret passage.
In truth, he had lost the will to fight the moment Tong Baitao was killed. He knew the remaining men were no match for Chen Chuan, not to mention he could feel the Patrol Bureau’s people coming up.
When he saw that Fang Dawei was also losing, he fled without hesitation. The secret passage he had discovered below became his escape route.
His unique physique made him hard to spot. All he had to do was sneak out, hide in a patch of tall grass, and wait for nightfall to make his escape.
The secret passage was extremely narrow, barely wide enough for a person of normal build. But for him, it was no problem at all. He crawled outward, hugging the rock wall.
He would move a few feet, then pause, only continuing forward when he felt it was safe.
Moving slowly like this, he soon reached the exit. He waited a little longer, and after confirming there was no one outside, he swiftly darted out.
But just as he was halfway out, before he could fully emerge, a short spear suddenly shot out from the side. THUMP! It pinned him to the rock face. His limbs began to writhe uncontrollably.
Senior Brother Wu stepped out from the side, saying excitedly, "Been waiting for you things for a while. You really did try to escape this way. Junior Chen was right."
Before coming up, Chen Chuan had made an agreement with him: guard the secret passage entrance, but don’t go up. If anyone from Fang Dawei’s group tried to escape through it, he was to intercept them.
Anyone else might have doubted this plan, but he believed it without question. ’If you’re willing to risk your life in a fight, what’s there not to believe?’
While waiting here, others might have grown anxious, their minds wandering. But he had a one-track mind. When told to wait, he simply waited. He hadn’t moved a muscle since arriving, his breathing kept in a suppressed state, almost like hibernation. This was why Seventh Brother had failed to detect him.
Seeing that the man wasn’t dead yet, still writhing, he showed a look of disgust and contempt. He lifted his leg, applied Force Application, and stomped down. CRACK! He snapped Seventh Brother’s neck.
Inside the Sentry Post, Chen Chuan kicked Fang Dawei down. The rope around his neck pulled taut. His eyes rolled back in his head as he struggled and writhed, but the more he thrashed, the tighter the noose became. After a few minutes, he gradually fell still.
Doctor Lin looked up at Chen Chuan, who was standing on the second floor, and asked curiously, "You killed him. Aren’t you afraid Molan Company will come after you?" 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Chen Chuan’s gaze fell upon him. He said calmly, "You’re Doctor Lin, right? You’re not afraid, so what’s there for me to be afraid of?"
"Ah, so that’s how it is." Doctor Lin had a look of realization. "Right. But I’m not like you," he said leisurely. "Because I’m with Molan Company to begin with." He took a Name Card from the pocket of his lab coat and flashed it at Chen Chuan. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Lin Fa, an externally-contracted Implant doctor for Molan."
"An Implant doctor for Molan Company?"
"Correct."
Lin Fa put the Name Card away and pointed to the severed limbs on the floor. "Do you know where the Implants in these bodies came from?"
He smiled. "To research new Implants, Molan Company selects a batch of criminals for experiments every year. To test the Implants and collect data, they periodically release these prisoners into the wild and have people hunt them down. Or let them hunt others."
"Of course, they’re usually the ones being hunted, because the Hunters are the children of powerful families, and they have heavy protection."
"These scions of powerful families jokingly call it ’hunting.’ But in a hunt, prey sometimes slips through the net. It’s no big deal to Molan Company, though. It’s just a bit more trouble out in the open. Once they’ve observed enough, they can just recapture them."
Chen Chuan walked down from the upper floor and came to stand before Doctor Lin. He tilted his head up slightly and said, "And this is the so-called secret?"
Doctor Lin spread his hands in a helpless gesture. "Yes. For someone at Fang Dawei’s level, it’s a secret. But is there a single one of those powerful children who doesn’t know? And what if the news gets out? Never mind Yangzhi City—even in Central City, who can do anything to Molan Company?"
As he spoke, his voice filled with worship and longing. "They are a behemoth! The entire world is carved up by nations and these mega-corporations. They are the true rulers of this world!"
Chen Chuan looked at him. "And you? What were you doing with Fang Dawei? Just treating their injuries? Or did you have another mission?"
Doctor Lin smiled. "I followed them to perform physical examinations, and also to observe and record the daily changes and combat performance of their Implants. Incidentally, I also got to collect some biological materials for my own little experiments..."
At this, he pushed up his glasses and looked at Chen Chuan with great interest. "Actually... your fight with them was truly spectacular. I saw many things I had previously overlooked or never seen before."
"I’ll record all of this and submit it to Molan Company. I believe I’ll be rewarded soon, maybe even transferred to the Implant laboratory. Hmm, perhaps I should also suggest bringing in some Fighters to participate in the experiments. That way..."
As he was speaking, the flash of a blade suddenly lit up the Sentry Post. His expression froze. A gurgling sound escaped his throat as his knees hit the ground. He desperately tried to cover the gash that had been sliced open.
Chen Chuan started walking out, his expression calm as he spoke. "What gave you the illusion that you could get away?"
Doctor Lin fell to his side on the ground. He watched Chen Chuan’s back, Long Blade in hand, as he walked toward the bright white light of the Sentry Post’s exit, striding toward a place full of light. Meanwhile, his own consciousness slowly faded away, until it sank completely into darkness.
When Chen Chuan walked out of the Sentry Post, the afternoon sun shone down on him. Wei Oldhu and the Patrol Bureau’s Patrol Officers looked at him with a mixture of pleasant surprise and concern, awaiting his answer.
Chen Chuan nodded at them.
Wei Oldhu raised his pistol and shouted, "Go!" He was the first to charge into the Sentry Post, with a crowd of Patrol Officers following close behind.
Chen Chuan walked to the edge of the platform on one side. He stood there, Long Blade in hand, gazing at the vast, endless sky before him. One by one, Patrol Officers rushed past him and into the Sentry Post.
In this world, everyone lives within a web woven by themselves or others. Layer after layer, it separates and confines people. What they experience is just a man-made partition, not the real world. They can never see the heavens and earth beyond.
And there are some who, with lofty gazes from on high, watch everyone below fight and peck at each other within the circles they have drawn.
He reached out and clenched his fist tightly. He still remembered his original reason for walking the path of a Fighter: to constantly surpass himself, to keep getting stronger, so that he would no longer be bound by any restraints.
That conviction had not changed. He would strive to become strong enough, to seize the power needed to break free from all shackles!
After entering the Sentry Post, Wei Oldhu saw the floor littered with severed limbs and body parts, and Fang Dawei’s body swinging from the rope. Though he hadn’t done a headcount, he was certain the entire gang of bandits was here.
He suddenly felt stiflingly hot. He fanned himself a couple of times, wiped the sweat from his face, and said, "Damn, Big Head Nian’s got himself a good nephew. Really makes him look good!"
He grabbed a nearby Patrol Officer. "Go, hurry and inform Director Guan! Tell him we’ve taken the place! Hmm, and that Xiaochuan took care of everyone by himself!"
At the command post, Guan Yuming had also received the report. After repeatedly confirming the authenticity of the news, he remained outwardly calm, but he couldn’t help but clench his fist. ’Good kid,’ he thought. ’He actually did it!’
He pulled back his sleeve to check his watch. Including the time to get there and for the messenger to return, it had been exactly half an Hour.
He thought for a moment, then picked up the telephone receiver and dialed a number at the bureau. When the call connected, he said, "Hello, Director? This is Guan Yuming."
"Old Guan, don’t say another word. Molan Company’s people will be here any minute. Just pull your men back as soon as you can. With you and so many officers out there, the city’s defenses are thinned out."
Guan Yuming said, "Director, I was just about to tell you. The situation has been resolved."
"Resolved... What? Did Molan Company’s people arrive early?"
"No, it was one of ours. A kid from our Patrol Bureau family, a student at Wuda. He charged the Sentry Post alone and took down Fang Dawei’s entire group."
There was a long silence on the other end of the line, as if he were processing this news. After a good while, he asked, "A kid from our Patrol Bureau family?"
"Yes. He’s Nian Fuli’s nephew."
"Old Nian’s nephew, huh. Heh. Back when I was a company commander, he was my runner. If it’s his nephew, then he should be reliable."
Guan Yuming said, "Director, the student from Wuyi Academy came here on a designated commission. Later, when we learned Councilor Fang’s son had been found, the commission was withdrawn. The Wuyi Academy students mostly left, but Xiaochuan—that is, Old Nian’s nephew—stayed behind. He charged into the Sentry Post with just a single Weapon. I don’t need to explain why he stayed."
A voice of admiration came from the other side. "Good kid! He’s got guts! ...Alright, spit it out. What do you want me to do? Don’t ask for too much."
Guan Yuming said, "Here’s what I’m thinking. His designated commission was canceled, but... it doesn’t have to be."
"Not canceled?"
Guan Yuming said with a serious expression, "Not everyone in Fang Dawei’s group is dead. There are some who are severely wounded. We both know what’s really going on here, but we can also choose not to know. In exchange, Xiaochuan must pass his designated commission!"
The reply from the other end was decisive. "Since he’s one of our Patrol Bureau kids, I can cash in on my old reputation. Old Guan, you handle your end of things and get back here as soon as possible. I’ll go talk to them about this. Hanging up."
Guan Yuming slowly lowered the receiver, pressing it into the cradle. He looked outside, his eyes filled with solemnity. The designated commission wasn’t the most important thing. What mattered was the message this action would send to the outside world.
’This person is under the protection of the Patrol Bureau!’
