Cave Refuge-Chapter 312 - 290 Post-war and Hints_2
All those at the table were shrewd individuals; when he finished speaking, others glanced at Mr. Thompson intentionally or not, but now Mr. Thompson’s ability to maintain his composure had also improved significantly.
Even though the other party was hinting at wanting his son’s car both overtly and covertly, Mr. Thompson did not show any signs of anger. Instead, he calmly picked up his glass of wine and started chatting with Master Ye beside him.
Seeing Mr. Thompson’s composed actions, no one at the table followed up on the implications in the supporter’s words.
Even though he had come to offer support and rescued them from danger, given his status, the camp did not owe them anything.
It’s not that the elderly group are ungrateful after being saved.
If the support team had been of a different status, then perhaps the camp would indeed owe them a debt after hearing about their losses.
But they were troops dispatched from Pengcheng for support, which doesn’t mean they are obligated to unconditionally rescue everyone; their mission from Pengcheng was to rescue the military camp in Saxon County.
And the reason why the camp where Dong Tianyu was staying had such a difficult defense today was that Robinson William, taking half of the Inner Breath Realm Martial Artists from the camp, had gone to assist the military camp.
If Robinson William hadn’t taken half of the Inner Breath Realm Martial Artists from the camp, the defense battle at Dong Tianyu’s camp wouldn’t have been so tough today.
You have to understand that initially, during the day, Dong Tianyu and the other Inner Breath Realm Martial Artists were fighting outside the camp where the Giant Scorpion had emerged.
If Robinson William had not taken half of the Inner Breath Realm Martial Artists with him, the defense battle during the daytime at the camp would actually have been much easier.
Don’t forget that this camp, unlike others, might not have as many Martial Artists, but most of those Martial Artists probably don’t have much real combat experience.
In the camp where Dong Tianyu was, however, the majority of the Martial Artists are special forces members who, regardless of their Cultivation Level, have rich combat experience.
So even though Dong Tianyu’s camp is grateful for their support, it hasn’t reached the extent of lifesaving grace.
Furthermore, they are quite familiar with the Thompson Family’s situation, and just like Ye Liuyun, Dong Tianyu has been dealing with various matters outside, though recently he has been staying within the camp.
But they also know that even if the three members of the Thompson Family left here, they could find a place to live outside; the Thompson Family’s reliance on the camp is not too high.
On the contrary, Mr. Thompson often shares the things bestowed upon him by Dong Tianyu, and although these items are mostly consumed by the elderly group members in their eating and drinking, it’s these elderly group members who decide who has made contributions to the camp.
Having interacted with them for several years, despite Mr. Thompson joining late, they wouldn’t let an outsider’s words persuade them to demand the most valuable possessions from the Thompson Family.
If today they allowed Dong Tianyu to contribute his family’s things because of a word from an outsider, then tomorrow others might similarly be compelled to give up the most precious things from their own families due to someone’s words.
Nobody is a fool, the cunning elderly group knows full well the consequences of "sweeping the snow from one’s own doorstep," so when the leader of the support team had finished speaking, others at the table pretended not to understand and continued to chat aimlessly, maintaining the atmosphere at the dinner table.
The leader of the support team was somewhat young when it came to social acumen; he had already subtly put forward his request. Normally, if the camp agreed, they would not wait for him to make his demand explicit but would instead voluntarily offer a gift.
Then, there would be a back-and-forth interaction where the camp’s three refusals were meant to suggest they genuinely wished to give, and if he didn’t want it, he would have to firmly refuse after the camp broached the subject.
If he did want the item, each refusal would appear increasingly weaker, and finally, under the camp’s persistent offering, he would reluctantly accept the gift.
But now, having subtly indicated what he wanted, the others at the dinner table just laughed it off with him, pretending not to understand, which is essentially a discreet way of refusing.
Yet he naively thought that it was because he had spoken too obscurely earlier and that others hadn’t understood him, so he prepared to explain it again in simpler terms.
But each time, before he could finish, someone at the table would interrupt him in various ways, clearly not wanting to let him clarify the matter.
In the beginning, he thought it was just a coincidence, but after being interrupted numerous times, he finally understood the intentions of the others and angrily left the dining table.
After seeing him leave, the others at the table let out a sigh of relief, albeit helplessly. They had not expected that the people coming to support them would be so full of schemes.
Once that person departed, the rest at the dining table didn’t say much else. After all, it was inappropriate to discuss such matters in this public setting.
Aside from some displeasure at the main table, both the survivors in the camp and those who had come to provide support were quite satisfied with their dinner, since there was an unlimited supply of meat.
Perhaps because the camp had rejected the suggestion made by the leader of the supporting troops, the support team, after a brief rest following their meal, did not stay in the camp but left during the night.
Under normal circumstances, this support team would have stayed in the camp for several days to guard against another giant scorpion attack.
But it was for the best that they left; it spared everyone the awkwardness.
However, even knowing that there would be another earthquake tomorrow, the survivors in the camp still could not rest early tonight.
Even the special forces soldiers, who had been in a fierce battle all day, after a short rest from dinner, had to help clear the camp of the numerous giant scorpion corpses.
Although night had fallen, by turning on all the vehicle lights, the camp was not as bright as daylight, but it was enough to dispel the darkness.
With the martial artists providing assistance and the ordinary survivors helping out, several assembly lines were set up in the camp to process and break down the bodies of the giant scorpions.
Due to the sheer number of scorpion corpses in the camp, the processing was not as precise as when the hunting team usually brought back scorpion bodies; only the tastier parts of the flesh and the harder parts of the exoskeleton were kept.
The remaining carcasses were piled up on one side of the camp. With all hands on deck for the task, the efficiency was unmistakable. Despite working until midnight, they managed to handle all the giant scorpion bodies in the camp.
Exhausted, everyone sorted the processed scorpion meat and shells before each finding a comfortable place to rest at random.
In the past two days, the earthquakes had collapsed the factory buildings used for rest in the camp. Before the survivors had a chance to rebuild their rest houses within the camp, they were attacked by giant scorpions.
Fortunately, it did not rain; otherwise apart from a few survivors who could take shelter in vehicles, the majority would have had nowhere to shield themselves from the rain.
Deep into the night, with the exception of some special forces soldiers who forced themselves to stay alert on guard, the others fell into a deep sleep, too exhausted.
Zachary didn’t rest inside the vehicle at this moment. Not only did his parents and the Taylor family of four live in the Black Car, but since the carriage was quite spacious, Old Luo also brought his family to live inside.
This scenario wasn’t unique to Zachary’s Black Car; the other vehicles in the camp were also basically filled to capacity with survivors.
Before houses were constructed, the interiors of the vehicles marginally served as a place to sleep at night, where one could shield themselves from the wind and rain. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Sitting atop the vehicle keeping watch for the night, Zachary used his Divine Sense over and over to scan the surroundings of the camp to prevent another sneak attack by the giant scorpions.
At the same time, he observed the situation inside the Cave. Although Zachary had occasionally entered the Cave to relax recently, he had mostly practiced in the Hall of Longevity and hadn’t been active in other areas, so he wasn’t too familiar with the other affairs within the Cave.
