Cave Refuge-Chapter 292 - 282 Migration_3
Therefore, Old Zhao still needed to rely on supplies from the Pengcheng Government to sustain his upcoming life, and he was also very aware that if he merged with Robinson William’s group, it was highly likely that his Patrol Officers would revolt and join the Special Combat Team.
So when Robinson William said he would take the Special Combat Team members and leave, Old Zhao was not only not sad, he was actually very happy inside.
The relocation work went very smoothly. After all, before the disaster, Saxon County was just a two to three hour drive from Pengcheng, and although earthquakes had caused damage to some roads, the vehicles in the convoy all had relatively high chassis, so there were no problems on the road.
However, instead of the three days planned, the relocation took them a total of five days.
Dong Tianyu took his parents and followed the first convoy to leave Moon Bay. The makeshift shelter Dong Tianyu had originally built was not dismantled; he left it as a favor to Old Zhao from the Patrol Office.
Because the first batch consisted of pioneers, aside from a small number of family members, the majority of people in the convoy were Martial Artists.
The location selected by Madeline in advance was not bad; it was an industrial park. In this industrial park, there were no high buildings, only some steel-structured warehouses.
According to Madeline, before the disaster, this place was used as a transit warehouse, which is why the construction was very solid.
Moreover, the distance between warehouses was quite far, so in case of a significant earthquake that caused the collapse of a warehouse, the survivors living inside would not have too much congestion when escaping.
Additionally, the ground of the industrial park was covered with cement mortar, so there was no need to worry about Giant Scorpions suddenly burrowing up from the ground to launch a surprise attack, ensuring safety as well.
Besides that, the industrial park was surrounded by farmlands, and crops had already been planted in these fields.
Of course, just because they moved from Pengcheng to this area, it did not mean that they owned the crops grown in the surrounding farmlands, but given the vastness of the Plantation Area, the personnel in charge agreed that they could trade with them after the harvest of the crops.
In fact, the farmlands to the east of Saxon County were actually all under the control of the Pengcheng Government.
Moreover, these farmlands were taken over directly by the military under the instructions of the Pengcheng Government, bypassing the West City District Headquarters, otherwise there would not be so much food to supply the soldiers in the forces.
Before the disaster, Pengcheng’s rate of grain self-sufficiency was not high. Even when including the surrounding counties, the grain harvested every year in Pengcheng was not enough to meet the needs of all Pengcheng residents.
Furthermore, due to the price of grain, more and more farmers stopped planting it and switched the crops in their fields to cash crops, so Pengcheng’s grain supply became increasingly reliant on purchases from other cities.
After the disaster struck, the farmlands reverted to their original purpose. The cash crops previously grown were wiped out by one disaster after another, turning into nutrients within the fields.
When the Pengcheng Government took over the farmlands and started planting according to plan, except for short-maturing crops, there was no longer a trace of cash crops to be found in the fields.
However, there are only so many suitable planting areas around Pengcheng, and compared to going to its own subordinate counties, the distance from Pengcheng to the neighboring province of Saxon County was in fact closer, which is why the government arranged for troops to take over the area.
As for the original residents of Saxon County, not many survived till the time Pengcheng’s forces came to take control.
The reason was simple yet unavoidable—Saxon County, although close to Pengcheng, was located remotely within its jurisdictional prefecture-level city. Usually, the government would not invest much in remote provinces.
Here’s an amusing fact: the best-constructed building in Saxon County turned out to be an eight-lane dual carriageway. If not for this road connecting to Pengcheng, there would have been no such thoroughfare constructed through the city in Saxon County.
So although Saxon County did have a few civil air defense projects transformed into underground shelters, not only were they scarce, they were also constructed to meet only the minimal standards.
When the disaster came, these shelters could accommodate only a small number of survivors, and although they had been modified, the living environment inside was very poor.
After several rounds of disasters hit, the majority of Saxon County’s residents did not survive long enough for Pengcheng’s forces to arrive.
What was most regrettable was that even if some survivors lived until the Perpetual Night Period, the appearance of Giant Scorpions drilling directly into the shelters where the survivors lived sealed their fate.
Saxon County was different from Pengcheng. Even though the concentration of Spirit Energy in the air was gradually increasing, before the disaster, there were no Cultivators in Saxon County, and so, no Cultivation Methods were available.
Also, with no craft masters in the county town, not even a radio capable of picking up broadcasts existed, so the survivors lived in a very primitive state.
Moreover, there were no heavy weapons in this small county town, which allowed the Giant Scorpions to attack the survivors in the county without fear once they emerged.
Of the surviving residents, even those with a few handguns were no threat to the Giant Scorpions.
Ultimately, aside from an extremely small number of very lucky survivors who were rescued by Pengcheng’s forces, Saxon County had essentially no living people left.
This was also why, when Dong Tianyu arrived, even after entering the town of Saxon County, he had not come across any traces of survival left by the survivors of Saxon County.
