Cave Refuge-Chapter 154 - 153: Afraid That He’s Not Human_1
Dong Tianyu couldn’t help but feel dumbfounded when he was disowned by the other party just because he took their pulse.
With an expression of helplessness on his face, Dong Tianyu voiced his disbelief, "What the hell, am I not even human now?"
Upon hearing Dong Tianyu’s response, Hugo and Dr. Zuo shifted their gaze onto his face.
Once they saw Dong Tianyu’s features, their bewilderment intensified.
Despite Dong Tianyu’s handsome appearance, it was not of much significance. After all, both of them had been exposed to the internet before the cataclysm, so they had a high tolerance towards physical attractiveness.
What startled Hugo and Dr. Zuo was Dong Tianyu’s skin. Although he had a very masculine look, his skin was too flawless, resembling the creamy complexion of an actor on a television drama. His rosy lips and white teeth made a good impression on anybody who set eyes on him.
Upon seeing the exceptionally handsome Dong Tianyu standing before them, Hugo took a step back towards the entrance, pulling Dr. Zuo along.
This reaction was unusual for Hugo, who generally showed repulsion towards people more handsome than him. The more attractive they were, the worse his initial impression.
Hugo knew himself to be good-natured, but he was no saint.
Normally, when he discovered a survivor outside, all he would do was provide verbal warnings; he would never go risk pulling them into a passageway.
And he certainly wouldn’t bring them to the Refuge Center without registration out of fear that they might suffer a heatstroke, let alone abandon his post to search for a doctor to tend to them.
As Hugo recollected his actions, he began to suspect that he fell under some sorcery that made him behave so irrationally.
Watching Hugo who seemed vigilant, Doctor Zuo turned to Dong Tianyu and asked, "Who are you? How did you get into the Refuge Center? What do you want here?"
Hearing the question from a person who was checking his pulse with a pleasant face just moments ago but now looked profoundly serious, Dong Tianyu was at a loss for words. He said, "I was dragged in by him."
Hearing Dong Tianyu’s explanation, Dr. Zuo looked at Hugo in confusion.
"Didn’t I just tell you! I found him motionless by the lakeside. I thought he’d got heatstroke, so I brought him in."
With Hugo’s testament, Dr. Zuo didn’t let his guard down. He continued to interrogate Dong Tianyu, "You still haven’t told us who you are and why you were by the lakeside."
"I was originally going to set off from Nameless Mountain heading towards People’s Square. I happened to pass by Dragon Lake.
Seeing people active in the lake aroused my curiosity towards what they were doing. They seemed to be searching for clam shells which appeared interesting to me, so I stayed on the shore for a while to watch.
Originally, I planned to ask them if they could sell me a few when they came ashore. But they just disappeared around the lake and never came ashore.
I was wondering how they disappeared when I heard my name. Just when I was curious about where the voice came from, I was suddenly dragged over here by him.
Before I could even give an explanation, he was stuffing ice cubes on me and calling a doctor to see me. It was all so sudden, leaving me rather dumbfounded. I suppose you already know what happened next."
As they listened to Dong Tianyu, they admitted that his story was logically sound, but something about it seemed suspicious.
Dr. Zuo and Hugo thought for a while, realizing that Dong Tianyu’s account would have been plausible before the disaster, but now it just didn’t make sense.
The primary issue was the high temperature outside. Even if Dong Tianyu was heading from Nameless Mountain towards People’s Square, a normal person would try to find a nearby Refuge Center leading to the underground network, which would take them directly to the square. They definitely wouldn’t travel on the surface like Dong Tianyu.
The idea that he was watching people look for clam shells by the river for fun could have been believable before. But now, with temperatures reaching forty to fifty degrees, anyone could suffer from a heatstroke luckily by standing still in the open for long. Who would risk such harsh temperatures just to have fun watching activities by the riverbank?
Therefore, to Dr. Zuo and Hugo, Dong Tianyu’s explanation was full of inconsistencies, rather unbelievable for an ordinary person.
Both of them subconsciously moved closer to the entrance. Dong Tianyu, who had been alert all along due to his Divine Sense, noticed their subtle movements immediately.
Not wanting to cause further trouble, Dong Tianyu proposed a solution: "I think you have communication facilities here. Why don’t you contact Robinson William at the West City District Command Post? He can confirm my identity. By the way, my name is Dong Tianyu."
As soon as Dong Tianyu mentioned the West City District Command Post, Dr. Zuo and Hugo relaxed. To be honest, even if Dong Tianyu hadn’t mentioned his acquaintances, the two of them wouldn’t have been too apprehensive about a stranger, it was the fear that Dong Tianyu might not be human at all.
The Officials had taught everyone a lesson after numerous disasters. Consequently, the survivors who currently resided in the Refuge Center were generally cautious, but they largely abided by the rules and regulations laid down by the Officials.
Those who refused to comply were taken away by the Officials and their officers, ending up nowhere to be found.
Hugo subconsciously scrutinized Dong Tianyu’s shadow, resenting himself for the mistake he had made with his reflexes.
Feeling guilty about causing such a misunderstanding by showing a rare act of kindness, Hugo apologized to Dr. Zuo saying, "I’m sorry, Dr. Zuo. It was all my fault. I suppose we misunderstood."
Hearing Hugo’s apology, Dr. Zuo didn’t say much but continued to look at Dong Tianyu vigilantly.
Seeing that Dr. Zuo hadn’t relaxed his guard despite his apology, Hugo couldn’t help but wonder, ’Could I have really brought a monster here?’
This thought made Hugo quiver. It wasn’t that he was cowardly. If he were confronted by humans, regardless of how many they were, Hugo would have no fear.
But when it came to an unknown creature standing right before him, he doubted many could face it calmly.
At that moment, Dr. Zuo suddenly asked, "Are you a practitioner of martial arts?"
After hearing Dr. Zuo’s question, Dong Tianyu had a closer look at him and immediately understood why he had asked that.
Even though the three of them were in the same room underground, the temperature had risen to around thirty degrees.
In such a condition, Hugo was drenched in sweat either due to the heat or fear, while Dr. Zuo beside him did not seem affected by the temperature in the least.
Of course, that wasn’t the most significant difference. Dong Tianyu noticed through his Divine Sense that a force was circulating within Dr. Zuo’s body.
