Chapter 83: Too Kind

It was a little before midnight and Yuyang Municipal Police Bureau was brightly lit.

Almost 72 hours had passed by since Miss Zhao’s incident. So far, they had already found Miss Zhao’s corpse and caught the culprit who killed her – Long Guozhi.

The investigation had been going on very well and everyone could not help but relax a bit. The tense atmosphere turned jubilant as well. The successful operation tonight had clearly boosted their morale a lot and the officers planned to treat themselves to some late night snacks.

However, Li Zhi, the leader of the Violent Crime Investigation Unit as well as the lead investigator for this case, did not think so. He saw his brothers’ happy and relieved look and could not help but heaved out a drawn-out sigh.

He lit a cigarette and let it dangle on his lips, the white smoke blurring his vision. Perhaps everyone thought that the case had mostly been concluded and they only needed to tie up the loose end. But Li Zhi had a startling suspicion that they only touched the tip of the iceberg.

There were still so many areas of suspicion they had to discover. For instance, what motive did Long Guozhi have to kill Miss Zhao? If he was only under someone else’s command, then who could it be? What was Miss Zhao’s relationship with this person? Where had Long Guozhi thrown the murder weapon to? Was he operating alone or did he have any other accomplices, for example... the worker who was supposed to fix the malfunctioning elevator only to disappear when the police searched for them? What happened during the two years of Miss Zhao’s disappearance when she was fourteen? And lastly...

Li Zhi narrowed his eyes thoughtfully.

The last mystery that he could not solve — what was Mr. He’s involvement in this case? Why would his name appear in the crime scene? Who wrote it? Miss Zhao or Long Guozhi? And for what purpose?

Li Zhi did not trust in coincidences. There was no coincidence in this world, only premeditated action.

In one glance, Mr. He seemed to be a poor victim who got caught in the mess by accident. However upon closer scrutiny, they would find that everything was connected to Mr. He one way or another. Miss Zhao was the girlfriend of Mr. He’s physical therapist, then he had the VIP member card to where the culprit was hiding as well. Not to mention his obscure past that even Kang Guanyu could not find out...

In one glance, Li Zhi could tell that the man was anything but ordinary, but the most important question was... was he friend or foe?

Li Zhi had been a criminal investigator for more than a decade. The people he met were numerous and they came from all walks of life. He knew that people could not be divided into black and white, and that in this world, there were so many morally gray people.

They stood precariously between the line of good and evil, and their stance was the most unclear. If they were a friend, then they would be a very formidable teammate. But if they were a foe... it would be the most troublesome scenario.

So which side was Mr. He was standing on? 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"Capt." Li Zhi had been so lost in thought that he did not even realize Mu Yuze standing before him. Startled, he pressed the cigarette butt on the ashtray, rubbed his face roughly and addressed him with a gruff voice,

"Mu Yuze, good work today."

Mu Yuze simply nodded as usual. He was still wearing the undercover getup, but it was covered tightly by a large sized suit jacket that clearly did not belong to him. There was no need to explain who had given it to him. If Li Zhi was not a Beta, then he would have been able to smell the thick Alpha’s pheromones on Mu Yuze’s body. Unfortunately, he was. Yet his keen eyes caught a glimpse of obvious hickeys hidden beneath the collar of the suit jacket. It did not look like make-up at all. Whoever had inflicted it on him... must be very rough and passionate.

Li Zhi was speechless by the direction of his thoughts. He did not have any interest in his subordinate’s private life! He shook his head to sober himself up. "Do you have anything to report?"

"Yes." Mu Yuze took out two things from his pocket and placed them on the table. "This is the camera and recorder on Mr. He’s body during the operation."

"Ah, yes. Thank you for sending it here." Li Zhi had almost forgotten about this because he had so many things to ponder on. He called an officer inside and told him to process the recording. Then he asked Mu Yuze, "Anything else?"

Among everyone, Mu Yuze was undoubtedly his most troublesome member. No, he did not cause any trouble at all. On the contrary, he was quiet, diligent, brilliant and very disciplined. He was the model officer for all rookies whom they looked up very much to. Instead, it was his solitary nature that gave Li Zhi a huge headache.

He certainly did not expect Mu Yuze to say, "Yes, I want to take the rest of the night off. Mr. He is currently asleep in the car and I’d like to bring him home."

Li Zhi stared at him in surprise. As long as he knew Mu Yuze, and oh it had almost been five years now, he was not the kind of person who would open up so quickly to another. Li Zhi immediately put two and two together, asking. "Have you known him before?"

Mu Yuze nodded with a calm expression. "I have." As for where he knew the man and what their relationship was... he did not bother to explain. Li Zhi knew it was a sign that he would not say anything even if his mouth was pried open by force.

He could not help but sigh helplessly. At least, the kid was honest. "Well, go ahead then. Don’t forget to come early tomorrow. You do realize that you haven’t taken even a single holiday ever since you joined the team, right? Not even the mandatory days?"

The mandatory days Li Zhi was talking about referred to the holidays given to omegas for them to deal with their heat. Li Zhi could more or less guess that Mu Yuze had always used heat suppressors to delay his heat. It was certainly not healthy for the long run, but he had no idea why Mu Yuze was doing it when he had the privilege to take a few days off for that. It was not like Li Zhi could lecture him about it either. That’s why he could not help but show more concern toward this cold and indifferent subordinate of his.

"I know," Mu Yuze said lightly. "Thank you, Capt." After saying that, he turned around to go, clearly not having anything more to say.

"Mu Yuze."

Mu Yuze halted in his tracks and turned around, waiting patiently.

"You are the one who has the most contact with Mr. He these past few days." Li Zhi chose his words carefully. "In your opinion, what kind of person is he?"

This time, Mu Yuze did not answer directly. He contemplated hard about it and it took a few minutes for him to answer, "Very kind. Too kind." His lashes lowered to obscure his gaze. "Anything that’s too much will not be good, both for himself and others, but he clearly doesn’t realize that."

Li Zhi was stunned when he heard that, clearly not expecting such a solemn and intimate answer. For a moment, his expression turned awkward as he had no idea how to respond. In the end, he could only shoo Mu Yuze away with a helpless look.

Mu Yuze nodded his head politely then walked out of the office. His steps were measured as always, but if anyone looked closer, then they would be able to find that he was quite in a hurry. He passed by Kang Guanyu in a corner and merely gave a nod before continuing on his way.

Kang Guanyu had just lifted his hand and wanted to say hello as well as commended him for the brilliant operation. However, as soon as he opened his mouth, the thick scent of pheromones rushed to his nose and he could not help but choke on it. He coughed so hard that he almost hacked his entire lungs out. His face instantly turned beet red in color.

Chen Lian, who had just come out of the bathroom, saw him like this and frowned deeply. "What the hell are you up to again, Kang Guanyu?"

"A–Chen— cough cough cough!" Kang Guanyu wheezed, barely recovering from the mental and physical attack he had received. He clutched his chest and showed an astonished look. "Holy shit... that was so intense."

Not understanding what he was talking about, Chen Lian could only leave. She did not want to be involved in whatever shenanigans Kang Guanyu had come up with.

The technician worked overnight to process the recording of the operation in order to file it into the database. Then, he was astonished to find that He Juan and Mu Yuze had actually crossed paths with Han Shan, the real owner of Phoenix Ablaze! And moreover, Boss Han had actually acted so meekly and respectful toward them!

Bewildered, he hastily sent the report to Captain Li Zhi.

In his office, Li Zhi listened to the recording twice and could not find anything wrong about it. The only weird aspect was how humbled Han Shan was. One could even say that he acted like a mouse who had just met a starving cat, especially courteous and deferential. Was he originally this kind of person or... was it because of Mr. He?

In the recording, the section where Han Shan had respectfully referred He Juan as Mr. Xiu had been cut off neatly. It was only one split second so the technician had failed to notice it unless he paid special attention – which he unfortunately did not.

From the start, the recording had been tampered even before it got into Captain Li Zhi’s hands.
