Chapter 549: First Step

Two more months flashed by in a blink of an eye, and He Juan remained in a comatose state.

Jia Molei reasoned that it was necessary for his body to finally shut down and commence the healing process that had been delayed by his severe mental health struggles. Besides, He Juan’s physical data all headed to a positive direction, thanks to his remarkable recovery rate as a superior Alpha. Hence, Jia Molei was more than content to let him sleep a little longer.

The trees shed their dried leaves, carpeting the ground with their reddish brown hue, and soon winter would descend upon the world. Looking back, Jia Molei had the urge to sigh. It was hard to believe that almost a year had passed since then.

So far, Su Xieren had not exhibited any suspicious behaviors. On the contrary, he had been extremely helpful and cooperative in helping He Juan turn his body, and sometimes, wipe him down. Even then, Jia Molei still watched over him like a hawk – or perhaps this was just his paranoia after years of dealing with the underworld speaking, as he always thought that everyone was hiding ulterior motives whenever they got close to He Juan.

(No, he would never admit that he had started to lower his guard down around Su Xieren.)

It was when winter had firmly taken hold of the world that Chen Youzhi came to him with surprising yet somewhat expected news. "You’re leaving?"

Chen Youzhi nodded. "I come here to bid my farewell, Doctor Jia. Thank you for looking after Bo— Mr. He all this time." He bowed deeply, causing Jia Molei to feel awkward all over.

"It’s nothing. Nothing at all," said the same man who had always complained about having to take care of an ungrateful bastard. He cleared his throat and switched the topic, "So you’re not going to wait for him to wake up?"

Chen Youzhi shook his head quietly, a wistful smile curving on the corner of his lips. He had stopped bandaging his face a while ago, revealing the scar across his left eye which looked a little sinister. However, the look in his eyes was ever kind and gentle. "It’s okay, he will not remember anything anyway. From now on, he will live as a new person, so it’s only right for me, someone from his past, to make myself scarce. I only hope that Doctor Jia will take good care of him."

"Of course," Jia Molei snorted. "He’s my responsibility now."

The two of them stared out of the window, each dwelling on their own thoughts, until Jia Molei broke the silence again, "So... where are you going?"

"Canada," Chen Youzhi responded without hesitation, surprising the doctor. He showed a wry smile, "Mr. He has always been worried about Sirius, so I thought I should go there first to check on how he’s doing. After that, I will join my old comrades wherever they are, and then... I don’t know. Maybe I will come back here and look for a proper job."

Jia Molei opened his lips as though to say something, but before he could do so, a nurse sprinted down the hallway and cried out, "Doctor Jia, the patient in VIP room 6 has regained consciousness!"

In an instant, Jia Molei’s pupils dilated and he immediately threw Chen Youzhi’s existence to the back of his mind. Following the nurse, he rushed down the hallway to He Juan’s room, only remembering the man’s presence when he had his hand on the door handle. But when he turned around again, Chen Youzhi was already nowhere to be found.

"Doctor Jia? Is there something wrong?"

"...No," Jia Molei shook his head, turned his attention back to the front and took a deep breath. After that, he slid the door open and entered the room.

A familiar yet foreign silver eyes greeted him, full of confusion and bewilderment. "I... I can’t..." he grimaced in pain as he attempted to recall his memory, only to draw out a blank.

Jia Molei strode to his bedside and adopted a professional demeanor, "Please calm down, Sir. Take a deep breath, and don’t force yourself. First, can you tell me your name?"

A disoriented He Juan mumbled, "He... Juan? Yes, I think that’s my name, but why... why can’t I remember anything else?" Pure panic flickered in his eyes as he sought the doctor for an answer, making him look utterly lost.

A heavy lump formed in Jia Molei’s throat at the sight of such raw and genuine emotions in He Juan’s eyes, something he had never seen before on XIU. Clenching his fists inside his pocket, he strived to maintain a neutral tone as he said, "Mr. He Juan? Nice to meet you. My name is Jia Molei, and I am your attending doctor. Calm down and tell me what’s wrong. Is your head hurting?"

Live, He Juan. From today onward, live for your own sake and nobody else’s.

"Gasp—!"

Mu Yuze snapped his eyes open with a gasp, his heart constricting in pain. He lay still in the bed for a moment, struggling to regulate his breathing and dispel the haunting images of his nightmare.

He wiped away the tears in his eyes and curled up in his bed that was layered with thick beddings and blankets – his nest. He took a deep inhale, yet he could smell nothing but his own scent. The bed was his sanctuary, but there was no hint of the rosewood and whiskey he had been longing for, and the mere thought of their absence threatened to bring tears to his eyes once more.

Almost eight months had passed since He Juan left him, yet Mu Yuze felt as though he was still stuck on that fateful day, as he kept relieving that harrowing event in his dreams every single night.

He would keep running and running, trying to catch up to the figure with his back turned to him. Yet no matter how hard he tried to reach out his hand, he could never grasp onto the other person. And in the end, he could only watch as the man walked out through the door and vanished from his life.

Hiccuping, Mu Yuze buried his face into his fluffy blanket and let his tears soak into the soft material. Soft murmur escaped his lips, a secret longing he kept hidden in the deepest recesses of his heart, only to be taken out when he was feeling particularly vulnerable.

"I miss you... Gege, I miss you so much..."

But soon, Mu Yuze gathered his spirits and dragged himself out of the bed toward the bathroom, getting ready for the day. Today was an extremely important day, and he needed to make the best first impression. He must not mess up.

After all, this was the first day of his enrollment in the police academy.

If he wanted to find He Juan and drag him out from wherever he was hiding, this was the first crucial step he needed to take.
