Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 547: The Only Way
"I’m sorry." That was the first sentence Chen Youzhi blurted out as soon as they met in the hallway, heavy remorse on his face. "I stepped out for a while to smoke, and he..."
Jia Molei grumbled under his breath, "It’s not even your fault, so what are you saying this damn sorry for?" Huffing, he beckoned for the other man to follow.
Together, they walked toward the doctor’s office, and as soon as the door closed behind them, Jia Molei instantly erupted in anger and kicked another chair, cursing, "That son of a bitch! I shouldn’t have saved him? I shouldn’t have saved him?! Ha, what utter bullshit! Does he think it’s something he can say to someone who has worked nonstop for nearly nine months to fix him up?! Without even getting a fucking cent in return?!"
Chen Youzhi’s brows twitched at the violent outbursts, but he recognized that Jia Molei needed to release his stress, so he said nothing in return. Nobody had worked harder than Jia Molei to save He Juan from the brink of death every single time. To see He Juan recklessly throwing his life away like that must be extremely upsetting for the doctor.
"That’s what he said?" He inquired with furrowed brows. "That we shouldn’t have saved him?"
"Oh yes," Jia Molei laughed angrily as he raked his fingers through his hair. "You should have seen his expression when he said that. I’m seconds away from punching him right on the face."
Chen Youzhi did not take those words to heart because he had already learned that Jia Molei was a soft-hearted person deep down. No matter how furious he was, he would never harm his patient. Instead, he was more concerned about He Juan’s condition. Rather than his physical wounds, it was his mental health that was rapidly deteriorating. If they left him alone like this...
The gravity of the situation caused his expression to sink. "Is there anything we can do?"
"Therapy?" Jia Molei suggested, only to brush it off in the next second. "Nah, do you think that bastard will accept therapy? He will make our therapist depressed instead." He paced back and forth in the room like an agitated beast, yet in spite of that, he still could not think of any solution to salvage the situation.
Hurry, they had to hurry... if they wasted any more time, He Juan would definitely make another attempt again!
"It seems like his brother’s death has impacted him greatly," Chen Youzhi released a heavy sigh. "If only he can forget about that."
Jia Molei sneered, "What? Do you think we should resort to hypnosis... hypnosis..." his expression abruptly shifted as he recalled something. Ignoring Chen Youzhi’s inquisitive look, he rushed to his table and rummaged through the drawers, finally finding what he was looking for at the very bottom. It was the very last dose he had taken with him from his recent trip to Myanmar.
"What are you..." Chen Youzhi stepped forward, only to be similarly stunned when he caught sight of the item pinched between Jia Molei’s fingers. He let out a shaky exhale, "Golden Sand?"
Golden Sand, also known as the ’Pill of Forgetfulness’. It was an extremely potent hallucinogenic substance that was said to be able to brainwash someone’s mind, even making them forget the most important thing to them.
Chen Youzhi’s breathing quickened in pace as he snapped his gaze toward Jia Molei, "Doctor Jia, if we use this—"
"Have you gone insane?!" Jia Molei cut him off harshly, his expression contorted into a myriad of complicated emotions. "There’s no way that bastard will agree to this. It means we’re going to use this on him against his will! We’re going to wipe off his memory and turn him into another person altogether! Will he still be the XIU we know?!"
Alas, even though the next words were not spoken out loud, it still echoed in their minds nonetheless.
Perhaps this was the only way they could save He Juan.
"I..." Jia Molei shoved the drug into his pocket with trembling hands and rubbed his face, laughing bitterly. "Give me some time to think about this. Fuck, I can’t believe the day has come when I consider using this on another person..."
Chen Youzhi nodded solemnly, "No matter what decision you make in the end, Doctor, I will trust your judgment."
"Fucking shit," Jia Molei couldn’t help but curse, his exasperation and frustration mounting. "Why do you always toss this burden on me, huh?!"
***
Jia Molei was still caught in his dilemma as he dismissed Chen Youzhi and returned to He Juan’s hospital room. He quietly slid the door open and acknowledged Su Xieren’s presence with a nod before glancing at He Juan who seemed to have finally drifted off to sleep. In spite of that, his brows remained furrowed as though he was relishing some kind of unspeakable pain.
Where had the confident and formidable XIU gone? What remained right now was nothing but a broken and extremely fragile shell.
How long could He Juan survive in this state? One week? Three days? Could he even live to see tomorrow’s sunrise? For the very first time, Jia Molei was unsure of his observation skill, as He Juan always had a way to catch him off guard.
Su Xieren quietly rose from his seat and approached him, reporting, "He finally dozed off after I administered an anesthetic. Seems like he hasn’t really gotten much sleep. If this goes on, it will be very detrimental to his recovery."
No shit, Jia Molei thought. He could tell at least that much. He also knew that anesthetic wouldn’t work in the long run. Sooner or later, He Juan’s body would develop resistance to it, and they couldn’t keep relying on it forever. "Did he say something?"
Su Xieren hummed, "I tried talking to him for a while. He said that..." the man hesitated, causing Jia Molei to snap impatiently. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"What did he say?"
"He said that the people he ought to protect are no more, and it’s better for him to die. He also mentioned something about needing to atone for his sins. I’m not really sure if I got it right. After all, he’s murmuring everything in a semi-conscious state."
"Fuck," a curse slipped off Jia Molei’s lips, unbidden. Why was this bastard so stupid? Had he gone too deep into the role of XIU the protector that he was obsessed with protecting everyone? If he simply used that as his reason to live, then what about himself? When would he start to live for his own sake?
"I apologize if I’m overstepping, Doctor Jia," Su Xieren cautiously voiced his concerns. "But I think that the patient’s mental health is very severe. There is a first attempt, and there will definitely be a second. I’m afraid we can’t keep our eyes on him all the time..."
He Juan had become extremely suicidal. No one could stop him if he really wanted to die. Sooner or later, He Juan would definitely do it, most likely after he regained enough energy to commit another attempt.
That was He Juan’s genuine last wish. He had really forsaken any hope of living. But...
Jia Molei’s hand silently squeezed his pocket where the drug was. But he couldn’t sit still and watch He Juan push himself to death. He couldn’t – both as a doctor and as He Juan’s friend.
At that moment, Jia Molei finally made up his mind.
