Chapter 540: In Life and In Death

With the current speed the car was going, He Juan managed to make it all the way to the highway, leaving the bustling city behind. But that also meant that his pursuers were no longer in the mood to relent and they tore after him with wild determination, discarding all inhibitions in their single-minded resolve to put an end to this chase.

He Juan’s eyes narrowed as he spotted someone in the rearview mirror brandishing a gun aimed directly at the car, and he swerved the wheel sharply just in time for the bullet to hit the asphalt beside his tire.

Of course, this could not be a solution in the long run. Furthermore, he could see that Ku Jin was closing in again with his motorcycle – which had only endured minor damages – while shouting angrily and giving him a middle finger.

He Juan snorted in disdain and shifted his gaze back to the front, his eyes sharp and steely.

Beside him, Luo Xuan was conspicuously silent. He no longer spoke a word since he witnessed how He Juan was desperate enough to crash into Ku Jin, as this reckless behavior was so unlike him. He might seem as if he was frightened, but He Juan knew it was not the case because he couldn’t smell even a hint of fear on Luo Xuan’s scent, only suppressed rage and impatience. He could almost hear the gears turning in Luo Xuan’s head, analyzing him to see if he could find a chink in his armor, seeing if he could find a chance to escape...

The corner of He Juan’s lips lifted into a mirthless smile. Not a chance.

Hadn’t Luo Xuan said it himself? Without any weakness, he would be invincible. At this moment, He Juan was precisely that – a man who had lost everything, a man who had staked his very life on this final mission, and a man who no longer feared anything, not even death.

And for that very reason, he would emerge victorious.

Despite the suffocating silence of the car, a battle of pheromones raged – a mutated omega against a superior alpha. The air was thick with the heady blend of sweet, rusty poppy and the commanding fragrance of rosewood and whiskey. So far, Luo Xuan stood his ground against He Juan’s powerful pheromones, though his breathing became more and more labored with each passing second, his complexion uglier.

Omegas were born to stay beneath Alphas, and no genetic change or mutation could ever alter that fact. He Juan felt bile rising on his throat upon taking advantage of this sickening power dynamic to suppress a weaker party, but when he recalled that this person was the very culprit behind Marius and He Xie’s demise, he immediately cast his shame and guilt aside like discarding old newspapers. The He Juan of the present was someone without a bottom line, someone who could resort to the dirtiest trick just to achieve his goal.

The trailing vehicles were no match for He Juan’s exceptional driving skills. One by one, he left them behind as he surged toward the mountainous terrain, the car engine roaring against the snowy path and cooking up a storm.

If this went on, everything would go according to He Juan’s plan. Luo Xuan must have recognized the gravity of the situation, because he finally took the initiative to break the oppressive silence.

"You want to kill me and then yourself?" He leaned closer to He Juan, his voice a sinister whisper. "Are you sure? That... doesn’t sound so bad, actually." He offered a sly smile. "At least, we will be together until eternity. You’re mine in life, and you will still be mine in death. But of course, that would be hell for you, wouldn’t it?"

A mirthless laughter bubbled out of He Juan’s throat, unbidden. So he was resorting to psychological manipulation. Unfortunately, He Juan couldn’t care less if he had to suffer for eternity; his life had already become a living hell.

And if Hell was where he would end up after death, then he would gladly drag this person down with him.

If it meant he could prevent the mass production of X serum and safeguard the future of all omegas in the world. If it meant he could protect Mu Yuze’s future...

The corner of He Juan’s eyes prickled with tears at the mere reminder of his little mate, and Luo Xuan, who misunderstood the situation, continued to press further, "You don’t want it to happen, do you? I don’t want it either. XIU, you’re my left-hand man. You’re one of the few people I acknowledged in my life. I know you’re doing this in the heat of the moment so..."

Without warning, he lunged forward and grabbed the wheel, forcibly steering it toward a nearby hillside on the mountain road. "...you should stop while I’m still talking nicely, you bastard!!!"

He Juan had anticipated this coming, and as soon as the car swerved violently to the side, he delivered a brutal punch to Luo Xuan’s abdomen while regaining control of the wheel.

"...Urgh!" Luo Xuan crashed to the door behind him as he covered his stomach, blood staining his lips. He spat out a curse, his eyes murderous. "You fucker!"

That minute instability of the car was just enough for the pursuing vehicle to shoot forward like an arrow. In a blink of an eye, the two cars were aligned side by side on the narrow and treacherous road. Without hesitation, the other car rammed into theirs, pushing it toward the edge of the hill. The window slid open, revealing a bodyguard in a suit aiming a gun at He Juan’s window.

He Juan’s pupils dilated and in that split second, his foot slammed on the brake, causing the bullet to shatter the front glass instead. Luo Xuan screamed as the action prompted the car behind to bump into their rear. But He Juan thought it was worth it when the initial car that had attacked them abruptly lost its balance and crashed through the metal guardrail, plunging over the cliff.

Meanwhile, He Juan wasted no time and swiftly stepped on the gas pedal, racing forward. But he knew that he did not have much time left.

It was because there was a sharp, almost forty degrees turn in front.

When Luo Xuan realized that he did not have any intention of braking, he went batshit crazy and threw all caution to the wind, kicking, punching, deliberately targeting the wounds on He Juan’s chest and back. "You’re fucking insane! You want to die with me so badly, huh?!" He cried out in a whirlwind of rage, an acrid scent of extreme fear permeating from him.

Because unlike He Juan, he still feared death. Hell, he still had so much unfinished business, so many things left undone. He couldn’t die here!

Despite the agonizing pain coursing through his body, even with Luo Xuan’s vicious attack reopening his wounds, He Juan still laughed. It was a hollow and bleak laugh that was devoid of all emotions. "Yes," he whispered, tears sliding down his cheeks as the sharp turn came closer and closer. "You’re right. Let’s die together, Luo Xuan."

"AHHH—!!"

He Juan closed his eyes, smiled, and let go of the steering wheel just as the car plowed into the metal guardrail at full throttle, launching itself into the air before plummeting and rolling down the cliffs below.
