Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 524: Soon
It was in the middle of the night when heavy snow fell relentlessly from the sky that the Yuyang City Bureau erupted into chaos.
The source of this upheaval was none other than the Captain of the Violent Crime Unit, who suddenly slammed the door of his office open and announced solemnly, "I’ve received intels about XIU’s whereabouts." Without waiting for a response, he pointed at a few bewildered and sleepy officers. "You, you and you guys, prepare yourselves. We will be leaving soon. Let me go and report this to the Director first."
Captain Yi left as swift as a whirlwind, leaving the office in a deathly silence.
The members of the Violent Crime Unit stared at each other, still trying to process the bombshell they had just heard. The ones who were eating stopped with their spoon halfway into their mouths, the ones who yawned froze midway, and even those dozing off due to the frigid weather snapped awake, their drowsiness dissipating without a trace.
"Holy crap..."
A low curse broke the silence, and it was akin to a splash of cold water on a heated frying pan. The atmosphere exploded in the next moment as everyone shot up to their feet.
"W–What did the Captain just say?!"
"After months of fruitless searching, we’ve finally got a lead on XIU?!"
"That son of a bitch hid himself so well, let’s see if he can escape again this time!"
"Fuck, I can’t wait to slap these cuffs on his wrists!"
"Ah ah ah, I want to go too! Why wasn’t I chosen?!"
The loud ruckus from the team office could be heard all the way to the Director’s office at the end of the hallway. "Are you absolutely certain about this?" The brooding man in his fifties inquired, the hand holding the pen trembling ever so slightly. "Have you verified the authenticity of the information?"
"Yes, I’m sure," Yi Peizhi replied with a resolute tone. "The source of this intel is the informant I have been working with since last year. They have gone undercover for more than three months to secure this lead. Time is tight, Director. Please grant me the permission to proceed. I will surely capture XIU this time!"
Yi Peizhi’s speech sounded extremely powerful and awe-inspiring, though inwardly he was grimacing hard because how was he supposed to admit that the ’informant’ who provided the information about XIU’s whereabouts was none other than XIU himself? However, this deception was needed, for Yi Peizhi had to act this out for everyone to see.
"Be careful with the people in your bureau. Some of the higher-ups have connections to the Boss of Xuanlong, and if I dare to say... even the Director himself. You must move fast and catch them off guard before word reaches my Boss’ ears."
Such was the warning XIU had given him the day before.
"How are you so sure that your Boss will come?" Yi Peizhi had continued to ask.
The ever elusive and mysterious XIU was silent for a moment before replying, "He will." His tone was filled with myriads of complex emotions Yi Peizhi couldn’t comprehend. "He will show up."
As long as they managed to apprehend the Boss of Xuanlong tonight, as long as the Interpol caught wind of the news in time, then they would not only expose a sinister secret experiment which had dated back to decades ago, but also uproot corruption from within the bureau. And it was for that sole reason that Yi Peizhi agreed with XIU’s audacious plans. Yes, it was crazy – crazily dangerous – but the reward they would obtain made it a gamble worth taking.
Besides, when had this job ever been easy?
Yi Peizhi strengthened his resolve and stared at the Direction right in the eye, imploring, "Please grant me the authority to start the operation, Director. We can’t afford to let XIU escape again after all this time!"
He was renowned in the whole bureau for his strong sense of justice and exceptional skills, and thus there was no need for the Director to doubt him when he put it like this. "Very well," the man stood up and grabbed his jacket. "Let’s go, I will come with you."
A convoy of police cars rushed out of the bureau with their sirens blaring, carrying armed officers who had equipped themselves fully for the impromptu operation tonight. Leading the way was none other than Yi Peizhi, his gaze fixed firmly on the road ahead.
I have played my part. Now, everything’s up to you, XIU. You must not mess up!
Meanwhile, He Juan was driving to the appointed location, taking a different route from the police. Cars streamlined through the nighttime city, their headlights carving red streaks amidst the darkness. The location they had chosen was an abandoned warehouse near the seaside. It was secluded, desolate yet it also offered ample cover for various potential ambush points.
He Juan quietly parked the car in an inconspicuous area and leaned against the seat for a while, taking a moment to collect himself. He had arrived early for their meeting, as there was still more than half an hour to spare, though he had no idea whether Captain Yi Peizhi had led his team to set up an ambush nearby. They had agreed not to contact each other throughout the entire operation to avoid rousing any suspicion.
He turned off the engine and was about to leave the car, but at that moment, his phone rang. He was startled to discover that the caller was He Xie. It was already so late, did something happen?
Anxious, He Juan quickly answered the call, "Hello, A–Xie? Is something wrong? Why are you calling so late?"
There was a brief silence from the other end before He Xie’s voice came through, "Ge, have you found XIU’s whereabouts yet?"
It was not the first time He Xie had asked this question, but it never failed to make He Juan’s stomach twist. He swallowed hard, his throat running dry all of a sudden. "I–I’m still working on it," he said, before shifting the topic back. "Why do you ask all of a sudden?"
"No, it’s just that..." He Xie hesitated for a moment. "It’s been over a month, so I was wondering if you have discovered something new." 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
He Juan raised his head to take in the warehouse in front of him. The snowflakes obscured his vision, making it seem like he was seeing everything through a blurred glass. "Don’t worry, A–Xie. I will definitely bring Xia Weisheng the justice he deserves. Please wait for a little longer, okay? Everything will be over soon."
He Juan could tell from the lingering silence that He Xie still had something to say. But in the end, he merely sighed. "...Okay, Ge."
They continued to chat for a little while longer, with He Juan asking how he was doing for the past month. However, He Xie seemed a little distracted, only giving him curt responses.
He Juan resisted the urge to sigh. Granted, he must be anxious with the long wait. He Xie wouldn’t be able to move on until the perpetrators of Xia Weisheng’s accident were brought before the law, but that responsibility did not fall on Ye Hu. That kid was just an unfortunate person who happened to be in the wrong place and the wrong time. The ones responsible should be those who started the experiment in the first place. As difficult as it might be to accept, he hoped that revealing the truth about the secret experiment would one day provide He Xie with the closure he sought.
After ending the call, He Juan noticed that only a few minutes remained until the appointed time. He took one last inhale, muttering to himself, "Everything will be over soon."
Yes, after this, he would take his hands off these matters once and for all and return to the people he loved. He only needed to endure a few more days.
With that resolution in mind, He Juan opened the door and stepped out of the car, allowing the harsh and unforgiving snowstorm to engulf his body.
