Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 522: X Serum
As He Juan drove to the meeting location, delicate snowflakes began their descent from the overcast sky, draping the world in a captivating ivory curtain. He smoothly parked his car beneath the bridge along the riverbank, where another vehicle had been waiting for him. Rolling down the window, he nodded in acknowledgement to Chen Youzhi who had alighted from the other car. "Get in."
A rush of frigid air swept into the car once Chen Youzhi opened the door, only to be cut off in the next second when he sealed it shut once more. "Boss," he greeted, handing a thick document to He Juan. "Here is the information you wanted. All of our spies were captured and eliminated, but fortunately they managed to secure the files to safety."
He Juan let out a hum as he unsealed the document and took out the thick stack of papers within. As he scoured through it, not even a ripple of emotions passed over his eyes. He couldn’t help but find it somewhat ironic because if it had been He Juan of a few months ago – the He Juan who had not lost his friend and brother to an underhanded scheme, the He Juan who had not endured grueling torture in that dingy underground chamber – he would have tried his best to put himself in another person’s shoes. He would have sought compromise that could satisfy all parties.
But now, not anymore. Perhaps that naïve and silly part of him had really died, leaving only the callous and cold-blooded self who would resort to any method to stop this madness.
Within the car, silence reigned as He Juan meticulously combed through the files, while Chen Youzhi waited patiently without a word. It wasn’t until He Juan reached the last page that he asked, "Have you read this?"
Chen Youzhi shook his head firmly. "This is highly classified information. You instructed me to bring them to you at once. Even our spies don’t really know the exact contents of the information."
He Juan let out another hum, then he offered the papers to Chen Youzhi, "Read it."
"Boss..." Chen Youzhi was taken aback. This was something which had never happened before. Usually, He Juan would be the one to make decisions, and his men only needed to execute them for him and make sure that everything went smoothly. Now though...
At He Juan’s insistence, Chen Youzhi was forced to receive the papers which felt like a hot potato in his hands. He wouldn’t be killed later because he knew too much, right? With the trepidation lingering in his mind, he began to peruse the files. Seconds and minutes ticked by, and his expression slowly morphed from the earlier confusion to disbelief, anger, and indignation.
"T–This...!" He snapped his gaze back to He Juan, unable to believe what he was seeing.
He Juan responded with a slow nod, draining the colors from the other person’s face.
The contents of the files were actually quite simple – they were the observation records of omegas who were injected with an experimental X serum, which had yet to be officially named.
Simply put, this serum yielded similar effects to AX–03, but it only worked on omegas. The omegas who were injected with X serum would undergo varying degrees of mutation, with most showing rejection as their immune systems waged war against the foreign, predatory cells devouring their own. Only a small handful survived, and they remained under constant surveillance due to the risk of going out of control at any moment. What made it more repulsive was the fact that the serum’s success rate was higher on omegas who had just presented, meaning that majority of the experimental subjects were minors below fifteen of age.
It was surmised that, if successful, X serum could birth a new species in the world – mutated omegas.
No, perhaps they had already existed in this world. It’s just that they had always been living under the shadows, and their presence would never be discovered unless something major occurred, such as the Wunan Road Massacre.
Chen Youzhi’s complexion blanched. "What kind of sickening drug is this?!"
He Juan cast him a faint, assessing glance. During his three years of investigation into mutated Alphas, he had tried to keep all of his men in the dark as much as possible. And it helped when they never questioned He Juan’s intention, simply focused on executing the orders that had been given to them.
He did this because of selfish reasons. The fewer people knew about mutated Alphas, the better. For he could already imagine how society would react to such anomalies – terms like freak, monster, and killing machine would undoubtedly abound. Alas, his plans had gone completely awry since Ye Hu manifested in public, thus thrusting their existence into the spotlight.
Even then, people still dared not acknowledge their existence. Instead, many considered them as fabricated truth, lies spun to conceal some grand conspiracy, or exaggerated stories disseminated by those who sought chaos.
What would happen to this world if mutated Omegas were to show up, on top of mutated Alphas?
"It’s a drug that will make omegas stronger," He Juan explained, just to test the other man’s reaction. "With this, they can never be used, exploited and slaved again. Don’t you think it’s good if such a drug exists in the world?"
Chen Youzhi stared at him in sheer shock and disbelief, as though he couldn’t believe that such words could come out of He Juan’s mouth. Despite the warm air in the car, Chen Youzhi found himself breaking out in cold sweat and he blurted out before he could second-guess himself. "I–I beg to differ."
"Oh?" He Juan raised an inquisitive brow.
Chen Youzhi swallowed hard. Gritting his teeth, he braced himself to voice his opinion though it might very well result in a bullet through his body. This was just how he was. He was unlike the rest of He Juan’s subordinates who put blind faith on the man. If he believed that He Juan’s decision would lead to greater destruction, he wouldn’t hesitate to say his piece.
He Juan had kept him alive until now, so perhaps he might have appreciated this honesty, or so Chen Youzhi hoped.
"I know I might sound utterly absurd and religious by saying this, Boss, but I believe that there’s a reason why Alphas are born strong, Omegas delicate, and Betas to dominate the population. It’s like... like a natural and balanced ecosystem, and to try to change it is..." he struggled to find the right words. "It will not give a positive impact to the world. To meddle in God’s creation, haven’t you heard it will incur heaven’s wrath, Boss? Besides, who’s to say that Omegas will not continue to be used, exploited and slaved once they become stronger? Isn’t it more accurate to say that they would attract even more threats to themselves? I’m sorry to say this, Boss, but I can’t support your decision. This is wrong. It’s just like the creation of a nuclear bomb or... or..."
"Pfft."
Chen Youzhi raised his head with a whoosh, dumbfounded, to find He Juan struggling to rein in laughter. "B–Boss?" Had he said something funny? No, he was just giving a piece of his mind, so why was He Juan laughing?!
"Look at how flustered you are." He Juan’s eyes crinkled with mirth. "Don’t worry, Chen’er, I will not do anything you feared. I agree with you, this kind of drug should never exist in this world."
It took two full seconds for the words to sink into Chen Youzhi’s mind, and he instantly slumped on the seat, tension rolling off him in waves. "I thought you were going to..."
His heart was still racing in fright. To think that he’d been certain that he would have to crawl his way to the nearest hospital after this!
"My bad." He Juan patted his shoulder in consolation. "I needed to ask this to know where you stand. And now that I do, I can finally share my plans with you."
In an instant, traces of amusement faded from He Juan’s face, replaced with deep somberness. Chen Youzhi straightened up, knowing that whatever He Juan was about to say would be of utmost importance.
"We are going to revolt."
Chen Youzhi could feel himself gawking. "We’re going to... what?!"
