Chapter 401: Preparing Dinner

They stayed in the dojo for ten more minutes to confirm the schedule, as Mu Yuze still had to receive lessons from Teacher Wei for his study. In the end, it was decided that Mu Yuze would receive one-on-one tutor directly from Mr. Song himself during the weekend and if he’d like, he was free to join regular classes on weekdays with the other students too.

"I’m sure Mr. Song will teach you well," He Juan said after they got back into the car. And then as though recalling something, he laughed and gave Mu Yuze a playful warning, "Be careful, Xiao Ze. Mr. Song is a very strict teacher so you have to be earnest in learning, or else he will kick you out of the dojo."

"It’s okay, the stricter the better." Mu Yuze could tell in a glance that Mr. Song was a very disciplined man. He could almost imagine the man being an instructor in the army, scowling when he saw the slightest error in the rookie soldiers’ posture.

Speaking of soldiers...

"How did you two know each other?" He couldn’t keep his curiosity in check. Only after he blurted out the question did he realize that it might sound a little rude, and thus he hastily added, "Oh I don’t mean anything by that. It’s just that—"

"It’s weird to see a mafia like me being acquaintanced with an ex-soldier, given the nature of our work that’s totally opposite of each other?" He Juan stole the words right out of his mouth. Startled, Mu Yuze turned to him and saw that a slight smile was still curling on the corner of his lips, not looking affronted at all by the audacity of the question.

Helpless, Mu Yuze could do nothing but nod.

"Let’s see..." He Juan tapped his fingers on the wheel and he slowly pressed on the brake when they neared the red traffic light. He turned to Mu Yuze with a brilliant smile, "It’s simple. He accidentally killed someone he shouldn’t have, and I helped him bury the matter under the rug. En, you can say that he owes me a huge favor, so it’s only right for him to repay me by taking care of you now."

Mu Yuze: "..." That’s what you call simple?

He was rendered utterly speechless. Not because of their history which he could bet was much more complicated than He Juan had made them out to be, but by the fact that He Juan was comfortable enough to show him this ruthless and indifferent side every now and then.

To think that there was a period of time when he believed that He Juan was a saint who couldn’t even bear to kill an ant...

He must have been blinded by He Juan’s sweet and charming smiles!

But still, he had to admit that this side of He Juan was kinda... hot...

Mu Yuze was occupied by his own thoughts the entire way home, and he only snapped out of his trance when He Juan dropped him off in front of the house and waved him goodbye, saying with a brilliant smile on his face, "I’m looking forward to eating our Xiao Ze’s cooking tonight!"

That reminder was akin to a strike of fierce lightning on his head. That’s right, how could he ever forget? He had to cook dinner for He Juan tonight and up until now, he still had no idea what he should prepare to impress the man!

For the rest of the day, he muddled through Teacher Wei’s lesson and finished his daily homework as soon as possible, and after sending the woman off, he immediately dropped everything and rushed to the kitchen.

He glanced at the clock and saw that it was still four in the afternoon. Good, He Juan would usually return by six or seven pm, so he still had more than two hours to prepare – both the meals and his own heart.

Alas, Mu Yuze had no idea that a huge surprise was waiting for him soon.

A little past five pm, as he was elbow deep in the kitchen, he heard the unmistakable sound of a car stopping in front of the house. His heart skipped a beat, but he quickly told himself that it couldn’t be He Juan. Even though this area was peaceful and serene, there were quite a few houses with cars and that included his next-door neighbor too.

’Right, it must be the neighbor,’ Mu Yuze convinced himself and continued to beat the egg in the bowl and added a little soy sauce and sugar into it. But in the next second, he almost dropped the whole bowl on the floor when he heard the sound of the front gate being opened. This time he couldn’t fool himself anymore even if he wanted to.

He Juan was really home! Why... why was he so early?!

Mu Yuze scanned the messy kitchen and panic arose in his heart. Without even thinking, he turned back and ran out to the door. The most important thing right now was to prevent He Juan from getting close to the kitchen!

Alas, in his haste Mu Yuze had failed to take into account that it was not only the kitchen that looked like it had just been through a tornado, but himself too.

Thus, the first sight that He Juan saw as soon as he opened the door was Mu Yuze who was standing on the hallway with an oversized black apron draped over his thin figure, and a face dirtied by flour and sauce. Not only that, he was still clutching the bowl of mixed egg in his arm. He looked so... cute! So cute! So cute! How could he be so adorable?!

He Juan secretly patted himself for deciding to leave the rest of his work for tomorrow.

"J–Juan-gege!" He stuttered out, almost biting down on his tongue. "Why are you here?!"

The corner of He Juan’s lips twitched and he cleared his throat to mask the laughter. He closed the door behind him, took off his shoes and asked in amusement, "What? I shouldn’t be here? This is my house too, no?"

"W–What I mean is...!" Mu Yuze’s entire face exploded in crimson as he tried to correct his words. "It’s only a little past five. You’re not usually so early..."

"Of course, I have to return early. After all this is the first time Xiao Ze will be cooking for me," he sing-songed, his good mood was apparent on his face. "Speaking of which, why have you started so soon? And here I thought to give you a hand."

Hearing that, Mu Yuze’s mind automatically went back to the disaster that happened during their Christmas Eve dinner with the Morningstar brothers. As much as he would like to stand side by side with He Juan in the kitchen and cook together, he was aware that it could only remain as a fantasy.

Nope, He Juan and kitchen were two entities that should not be put together in this lifetime!

"You... want to give me a hand?" Mu Yuze’s expression turned stiff as he had no idea how to tell He Juan that his effort would only turn into a full-blown catastrophe. "That’s a bit..."

This time, He Juan was unable to hold back his laughter. His broad shoulders shook as he reached out to wipe the flour on Mu Yuze’s cheek with his finger. "Xiao Ze, do you know what kind of face you’re making right now? You are hurting Gege, you know... am I that terrible?"

"It’s good that you are self-aware," Mu Yuze grumbled under his breath and turned away so that He Juan would not notice how his ears were bright crimson in color. It was easy to fall into this playful rhythm with He Juan, though he shouldn’t do it for a long time because it would make his heart flutter even more. He deliberately put on a poker face and gestured at the couch in the living room. "Juan-gege should just wait there. I will be done soon."

"Hey!" He Juan exclaimed, torn between laughter and tears.

But Mu Yuze did not give him a chance to protest as he was already walking back to the kitchen. Unbeknownst to him, the tension on his shoulders loosened amid their bickering, and a surge of determination washed over him.

He had to prepare the best meal for He Juan!
